I am looking at taking Bonine, from what others are saying...

Does anyone know about this stuff? I do not want to be drowsy or sick !

I am going with DD alone, so I need to be bale to ride stuff that may make me sick, I do not want to be a bummer on the rides ... so I think taking this may help.

When should I take it? Bedtime the night before ?? Any ideas ??

Thanks !

I take one bonine before the parks each day. You can get generic too, it is cheaper, but make sure the ingredient is the same.

I do not get drowsy from the medication. I will caution you that is not a 100% guarantee that you won't get sick on certain rides. It depends how prone to motion sickness you are. With the bonine I can ride teacups ... but I "steer" the cup so it does not spin, it just rotates if you know what I mean. I also pick a point in the tea cup (usually I look at my kids) and stare at them without looking outside the teacup. I was able to go on star tours and body wars with my daughter. I did not throw up, but it was not a pleasant experience even with the bonine. I had to stare at the floor. I would not go back on these two rides again. I did not notice a problem on any other rides, however, Mission Space was not open yet last trip.

It really depends on the person. My mother got motion sickness from watching the Canada movie in Epcot and had to lie on a bench for an hour!

I have awful motion sickness - I take bomine, and eat ginger (ginger snaps, or crystalized/candied ginger!) ginger is a natural remedy, read up on it, and you'll become a believer too - the combo of both them I feel made a huge difference!! I love roller coasters, but in the last 10 years something happened, and my motion sickness really prevented the fun, but the ginger and bonine made a huge difference!

Sea-bans help me. I still wouldn't ride the tea cups or merry go round, but they got me through everything else including Mission Space! I even wore them on a boat ride down the Detroit River (rode side ways to look at the houses in Grosse Pointe), ate, drank, and never had a problem. I carry them everywhere with me now and if I am forced to ride in the back seat of someone's car I slip them on and whala! I feel fine!

Whatever you buy, make sure you try it out at home first.

Most people do fine with Bonine, but it totally wipes my husband and me out for a full 24 hours (to the point that we just want to crawl under a rock and sleep). My daughter reacts the same way. Not good!

We now use concentrated ginger capsules that we bought at GNC. We have 1000mg capsules and we take 1 or 2 a day. It is a Asian natural remedy and it seems to help a lot. My husband, who couldn't ride any spinny rides, was able to ride Mission:Space 3 times our last trip without feeling sick at all, along with some other rides that would have bothered him in the past (he'd never ridden it before so we have nothing to compare it to). My sister rode M:S in Feb and felt very "green" for about 1/2 hour after riding. She rode it again (after taking the ginger capsules) earlier this month and felt fine and was even able to ride it a couple more times.

And best of all...no side effects. Still, try it out at home first.

I get motion sickness. Also, regular Dramamine makes me very drowsy.
Someone on this board told me about the less-drowsy formula of Dramamine, so I bought some. Wow! It was awesome.
I believe Walgreens sells the generic version of this less-drowsy dramamine, but we don't have Walgreens here.

The package of less-drowsy dramamine says it lasts 24 hours. I would just take one right before I ate breakfast. I wasn't drowsy. I didn't feel the usual nausea after riding the bus to the parks and riding the rides, either. I felt normal. :)

I'd highly recommend this stuff.

The less drowsy Dramamine has the same active ingredient as Bonine (the generic is meclizine). I do think it helps most people, just try it out at home first.

I get extremely Motion sick and have avoided Mission space due to it but this year I was able to ride it...I ate a bananna before hand and took a ginger tablet with it and I was ok....no problems what so ever....

I read a great tip on the board a while back. If you start to feel sick, sniff rubbing alchol. It works great. I use it on the plane and on any rides as needed. You can get a box of 100 packets for about $2.50. (they will look like handiwipes). Just open the pack and keep taking deep breaths with it held up to your nose. Works in seconds IMHO.

Enjoy

The added benefit is that you could then sanitize the areas around you. lol

I carry Purell wipes, which is basically rubbing alcohol--I'll have to remember that tip. Of course someone might call security if I'm sniffing Purell.

I have both bonine and non-drowsy Dramamine here, I leave wed am, so I better take on today and check it out. Gotta get packing too LOL yikes!

Thanks for all the info ! Ginger is interesting!

I have been prone to motion sickness since I was 5 years old, (now 42). Three years ago on our 1st WDW trip, the doctor gave me a Rx for scopamine patches. I rode 2000 miles round trip, rode every ride including RRC, and never got sick. I usually get sick on my son's swingset!!! I did not have any side effects, and just changed the patch every 3 days on the opposite ear (in the back). You may want to check into this. It is the first time in my life I was able to look out the car window and enjoy the trip!

I tried the Bonine today. Got a lil tired, didn't like the way it made me feel... is this the same as the non-drowsy Dram ??? darn I only have one day to get the right thing, hmm maybe I'll get the ginger instead...

Yes, same active ingredient as non-Drowsy Dramamine.

When I take Bonine I take the minimum dosage (I think the dosage is 1-2 tablets so I take 1). If I were to ever take it again (which I don't plan to given the alternative) I would take 1/2 tablet.

My husband looked into the scopamine patch before our fall trip. When he told the dr why he was interested in them (after the dr asked) the doctor literally laughed at him and told him to "just not go on rides". The dr told him that if he were going on a cruise it would be different (hmmm, someone can just "not go on a cruise" if they get sick). Anyway, my husband is looking for another doctor.

I think that there can be side effects from the patches, but I haven't tried them to know. My husband ended up taking the ginger and doing fine.

Do you have a GNC near you? If not ask at your pharmacy. If so, get the 1000mg ginger (concentrated so they are not horse pills) and take 1 first thing in the morning and one mid day (you can take 2 at one time if you want).

Good luck!

We got our Ginger at Wal-mart....3.86 for the bottle I believe wasnt much....worth a try at that price and it worked great for me....I believe between the Ginger, the rubbing alcohol, the Bananna and a coke immediately after a ride you should be fine.....LOL.... :D

for our last visit to WDW and it allowed me to do Mission:Space twice...in a row! (But was not brave enough to chance 3 in a row!). It did make me a little drowsy but not too bad. I would recommend taking it some before you go to just see how it will effect you and start with the lowest dose. I also read and would recommend that you take it before bed. It last for 24 hours and it makes me drowsy right after I take it so at bedtime works great. It does make getting up a bit harder (and this coming from a morning person) but again, it is worth it. You can get a generic version at some stores (Walgreens). It is cheaper but you have to buy a larger amount.

Good luck!

Thanks all! I got the ginger tabs. Hopefully this will do. I only get sick on some rides, not many, so I should be ok either way... thanks, I'll report back on the ginger too!

I have been worrying about Mission: Space for weeks. If I ride it and I get sick, I don't want to feel sick for the rest of the day! Or worse, what if DS or DH feels sick for the rest of the day?

WARNING: Children under 12 are not supposed to take Bonine or non-drowsy Dramamine (same thing) without consulting a doctor! The regular Dramamine can be used by younger kids but might make them sleepy.

I might give the ginger a shot. DS hates the smell of alcohol because he was in the hospital last year and every time they stuck him they swabbed him with alcohol first! Maybe we should just skip M:S and get on with our lives...

That's what I did. I know I'll probably feel lousy whether I take dramamine or not. Simulator rides don't appeal to me and I'm not going to risk an inner ear problem to ruin the rest of my day or trip. I have a video of Mission Space and I don't feel I'm missing out on too much.
