My mother and mother in law to be have both picked out their dresses for the wedding... They have both picked black dresses, is wearing black okay? Should they be wearing the same color? The dresses are very different but I am still wondering if wearing black is ok?

What have your mothers/mother in laws worn at your wedding or plan on wearing? Any suggestions?

Thanks

If you're fine with it I don't see a problem. However it all depends on what season you are getting married in. Personally I don't think it's a good idea for a Spring/Summer wedding. If you are getting married at WDW when the weather is warm/hot, it might not be a good idea as black absorbs sun and they may potentially fry for outdoor ceremony or photos. The other consideration is black from my viewpoint is something I'd see at very posh, ultra-conservative, black tie type weddings.

My MIL wore green and my mother wore ivory when we got married. I loved the whole MOTB ivory outfit from my favorite movie (Father of the Bride) so I wanted my mom to do the same. She didn't wear a suit like Diane Keaton did but she wore a stunning ivory dress.

Like I said, it's not a matter of what we would choose. It's up to you. It's your wedding. I got married at the beginning of May in Spring and my mother or MIL would so not have been allowed to wear black to my wedding. If I had gotten married in Nov/Dec, maybe.

I personally don't see a problem with wearing black, but my mom would not wear black to my wedding. In fact she tried on a dress that looked fabulous on her, but the only color it came in was black and she would not buy it. I actually liked it better than the one she ended up getting, but I'm fine with whatever she wants to wear (as long as it wasn't white, of course).

As far as your mom and MIL wearing the same color, if they were wearing matching greens or yellows or something that stands out, it may look a little strange, but I think black is a pretty common color to wear. And just about everybody looks great in it. So as long as the other knows that the other's wearing black, and they're both fine with it, than I really wouldn't worry about it.

Black is very flattering. As long as they know they are BOTH wearing black and dont care.... then what does it matter? unless of course the dresses are ugly... then that's another story! hehe

I work at a bridal salon, and I can tell you that these days, black is totally appropriate, unless the bride has an objection to the color. And if both your mother and your mother-in-law-to-be are wearing the same color, then they don't have to worry about not being coordinated (a big concern for a lot of mothers I work with)! So I think it's great! :)

My mom always told me that wearing black to a wedding was like wearing bright red to a funeral.

HOWEVER

All of the wedding I have been to recently - EVERYONE has worn black. Black bridesmaids dresses have even become pretty popular.
I was also at a funeral recently where someone was wearing red...

So with all of that in mind I think times have changed a bit. If they want to wear black then let them go for it. I am sure that as long as they are comfortable and happy then you will be happy.
