Mother Nature is trying to ruin our little "Stay-Cation"... WWYD?

We booked two nights (this coming Mon, Tues) in Saint Andrews, NB, which is a beautiful seaside town. We rented a cottage at a campground so we can cook our own food, and not have to deal with the exposure that comes from hotel lobbies, hallways etc... We planned on lots of fun outdoor sightseeing - the beaches, historic sites, hiking etc... Basically staying away from crowds and people.

And now, currently the weather forecast isn't great: 60% chance of showers Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We really don't feel like spending money to go sit in a cottage for 3 days staring at rain, nor will our kids want to be outside all day in rain for 3 days. That said... "showers" could mean a few passing sprinkles here and there, or it could change by then and be perfectly sunny. It's a gamble. This weekend however, Fri-Sun is supposed to be beautiful. But of course the campground is completely full and we can't change our dates.

So, we're torn on what to do:

- keep our reservation and take our chances on the weather
- change our destination to Moncton, go this weekend when it's nice weather, and stay in a hotel unit that has a kitchen. We could go to the beach and the zoo.
- We can snag one night at a seaside cottage in St. Andrews for tomorrow night and then maybe do a night in Moncton Saturday night
- Cancel the reservation and take your chances on being able to get something last minute with good weather later on

WWYD?

If it wasn't Covid, the weather would be a non-issue, we'd go outside when we can and find indoor things to do when it's yucky. But we're just not comfortable with indoor stuff yet since we're a higher risk family.

That's a tough one. Rent a nice cottage and be stuck inside. I guess it can be more of an issue for the kids than the adults. For me personally it would not matter. I could be walking around exploring in nice weather and if it was raining and I was stuck indoors it would give me a reason to brew up some coffee. This decision would be even easier if the cottage had a covered or screened in porch.
I guess at 60% chance of rain I would stick with the plans and go but I would expect some rain. You might still be able to walk and explore some trails if it's not a downpour.

Yeah these are just very small camping cabins, 12x16 type thing.... We tried to get nicer cottages but they were just too much money.

I would stick with Saint Andrews, especially during the week. I think it wouldn't be too busy to do an inside activity ( like Huntsman Marina, or to drive down to St. Stephen (I think Chocolate fest is next week, mostly virtual!)). Moncton would be nice, but not sure about during the weekend. I get the feeling they get more traffic as they're on the way to PEI and NS, and Costco runs for Islanders. I drove through last week, and traffic definitely picked up around Moncton.

All things considered, the risk in the "Atlantic Bubble" is pretty low right now, so either choice would be okay :-)

Yes good point about Moncton being busier. Especially the beach. The aquarium is nice but we've done it so many times it's kind of lost it's appeal, lol

My kid loves the aquarium still, me?..well... lol We're planning on Moncton later next month, during the week, to take advantage of the stay-cation incentive. Like you, all the activities we're planning are outdoors.

It looks like maybe just showers on Monday and Tuesday, with most of the rain over night Tuesday. Good luck making your decision!

As I tell my teenaged daughter, “you spend 45 mins in the shower every morning, so why are you bothered by being outside in a warm summer rain?”

Yes, being caught outside in the rain when it’s +10 isn’t particularly pleasant, but at +20, it’s really quite nice.

To be fair, there is a HUGE difference between being naked and wet in the shower, and being wet while fully clothed. You really can't compare the two. My daughter is autistic and hates being wet. She's not going to be willing to go touring around while wet unfortunately.

If you’re okay with playgrounds, on our way back from Hopewell Rocks we stopped at the Becca Schofield Playground in Riverview ... it was phenomenal. My girls said it reminded them of a Disney park :earboy2:

Yes, they love them. We're really looking forward to the one in St. Andrews. We'll have to check out the other one too, though!

Agree to disagree. Then again, I’m the person who is befuddled by people who wear ponchos on Splash or Grizzly/Kali.

I hope you figure something out that works for your family.

Update: after the news about Isaias, we definitely decided to pull the plug on next week, since the forecast hadn't changed (still hasn't) for Mon/Tues and now Wed will be bringing rain, too. We were able to snag a last minute room in St. Andrews for Friday. So we took off Friday morning after that, and spent Friday and Saturday there, and had gorgeous weather and a great time. We went to Kingsbrae Gardens and Minister's Island. The entire area was sold out for Saturday night, being a long weekend, so we just plan to do another jaunt down next week or the week after. Here's a few pics for ya! DSC_4746(1).jpgDSC_4984.jpg
