I haven't been to Disney in almost 3 years and so my mom and I (57 and 34) are taking a trip alone to celebrate my birthday in January.

Where should we stay. I was thinking of maybe renting DVC points? My main concern is I don't wanna stay in a construction zone. I'm so out of the loop! What has been recently refreshed?

How nice and happy birthday for Jan. I think that VWL and OKW are having refurbs. So you might want to look at SSR or BC. BC for ease into EPCOT? That way you will have a lot of places to eat in the evening. SSR for Disney Springs. I would suggest BWV but I think it might be refurb as well.

My mom and I are taking a trip next month for my birthday! We are both adults and are staying at The Grand Floridian! Its perfect for a girls trip!

Renting DVC for January is not going to be possible for the first week, as marathon weekend is pretty tight.

Your best odds, given that you are well within 7 months, will be at Saratoga Springs or Old Key West. Grand Floridian won't be available, and I would expect issues at Beach Club and Boardwalk.

For a girls only trip, I HIGHLY recommend the Grand Floridian! It is the ultimate girly resort! Old Victorian style, great shops, beautiful pools, fantastic restaurants, newly refurbished rooms and right on the monorail. You could go to afternoon tea, the spa, watch Wishes from the boat dock, etc. All view types are great there, including standard rooms.

In the EP area, I suggest BWI or BWV. Again, fantastic, turn-of-the-century Boardwalk theme, beautiful lobby, great music, great restaurants and within walking distance to both EP and DHS. A little more "adult" than BC and a little less convention feel than YC.

If deluxe isn't in the budget, I would consider POR or POFQ. Both beautiful resorts with a lovely boat to DS for dinner and shopping. For a little extra fun, book a royal room at POR!

I would love GF!!! But it may be a bit rich for us. I will patiently be waiting for discounts. I'd love to stay on the monorail.

My adult daughter and I have been fortunate enough to take two Mom/Daughter trips - once in fall of 2013 & most recently this past May. In 2013 we stayed at CBR with free dining. While we had a wonderful trip - there were things we didn't love about this resort. Busses were infrequent and when they did arrive, then had to make 5 internal stops before heading off to the parks. The rooms were lovely though and the resort is absolutely beautiful. Our trip this past May we did a split stay - 4 nights at the BWI and 3 nights at AKL in a Savannah view studio via DVC point rental. We LOVED the Boardwalk! I've stayed at about half of all resorts on property, including the Beach Club and this resort became our favorite. It is beautiful, you have lots of restaurants just outside your door on the Boardwalk & the proximity to both EPCOT and HS just cannot be beat! Animal Kingdom Lodge is just so incredibly gorgeous, has wonderful restaurants and seriously - waking up and enjoying coffee on your own balcony overlooking the savannah with Zebra, Giraffe, multiple kinds of deer, birds, wild hogs, etc. Just SPECTACULAR!

At the end of the day - I don't think you really can go wrong with wherever you choose to stay. All the resorts are beautiful and special in their own way & spending time with your Mom in your happy place will be absolutely magical, I've no doubt!

Happy planning!

If I were going with my mother....
I'd want to probably eat a lot of dinners in Epcot countries. And being that I've stayed at all 3 Epcot resorts, I know the BC is my favorite so I'd choose that one. However, it's all a matter of taste, so you might prefer the quieter, more elegant YC. Or the BWI is pretty nice too. No matter which resort, you could easily walk to the Epcot countries each night if you wanted. I'd be making ADR's for Japan, Mexico, Canada.....and many more!

Of course, over on the MK side, we love the GF and it sounds perfect for a mother-daughter trip. I understand the expense of staying there, though. Keep an eye on discounts because if you're going during the right time in January, it may offer a decent deal.

If I was going with my daughter she would want the poly. If I was going with my ddil we would choose the beach club. If my dgd and I went, we would stay at the Grand. Apparently Nana created a resort snob when I took her there! Lol!!

Honestly, look at what your interests are, determine your budget and stay close to the area you will spend the most time in.

If you want a moderate I would suggest CSR and get business class. It is s nice adult resort with awesome amenities. The lounge will offer a nice respite from the parks.

My daughter is only 10 but I'm thinking of a mother daughter trip in 2018. On the list is Contemporary TPV, POR, POFQ and GF. If we do CR TPV it'll be a split stay with one of the mods.

The lowest cost DVC is a studio, which has one bed and a fold-out couch. This may or may not make a difference to you.

Girl's trips:

I stayed AKL with my sister in a Savannah view room. Loved it! Great dining at Sanaa, Boma and Maara plus we splurged for her birthday and dined at Jiko. Also loved sitting on the balcony drinking coffee or wine and watching the animals.

Stayed GF with my DIL because we got a great rate while it was under construction a few years ago and it was also Christmas. The gingerbread house was amazing! The monorail didn't work a few times, so we ended up on buses to MK. Liked the proximity to MK but I'd pick WL over GF. Unfortunately WL (we stayed there for a big family trip) is under massive construction and we've rejected it for our February runDisney trip, otherwise we'd already be reserved at WL -- lovely relaxing lobby, great lounge, love the boat to MK. We're huge WL fans.

DIL and I also did a girls trip for a Halloween party and stayed POP. Food court as an only dining option and lack of other adult things like an indoor lounge (only a pool bar) just didn't work well for a girls trip.

February 2017 my DIL is doing all three Princess races -- she's running & I'm cheering. Figured she'd be so focused on running, we're making it a girls trip. We're debating POFQ, CSR and Swalphin. I like POFQ for a quiet, relaxing adult atmosphere and the boat to Disney Springs. CSR is attractive because it has room service and a spa but it looks like room renovation is finally starting. Swalphin is a relatively affordable Epcot resort with lots of good dining in the hotels and easy access to Epcot for more good dining. There's also a spa in at the Swalphin.

On all my girls trips, we spend more time at the resort. So if I get the discounts, we stay deluxe. Otherwise we stay moderate. Value is fine for family trips but they don't have the more adult atmosphere and dining that I like when I take a girls trip.

Also January in Florida can be all over the map weather-wise. So a nice lobby area to hang out in can be a real plus. The best lobbies and indoor hallways are at the deluxes.

My DD and I have done many mother / daughter trips. We have stayed everywhere from ASMu to the GF and loved every trip. If I were returning with my DD I would stay GF again. It is so perfect for mother/daughter activities that we both enjoy. We love afternoon tea, manicures, spa time, salons, watching Wishes with a glass of wine on the balcony....

OTOH, if I were going with my Mom, I would stay in the CR TPV. She LOVES that resort and view! She is elderly so the ease of getting around the CR is a big plus! Walking to and from the MK is nice too. WE get an ECV if necessary.

If I were going with my DDIL, I would stay at the AKL pool view. She lived in Africa as a girl and loves the memories the AKL invokes.

The common denominator is, I would stay in the resort that fit the likes of the person that I am travelling with for that trip. Where would your Mom like to stay? What are the things that you like to do together? I would pick the resort that best matches what you will both enjoy for this visit.

Have fun choosing!

PORFQ is a great moderate! It is around 200 a night in January so it would be more budget friendly than a deluxe.
I stayed there with my DD on our mother-daughter trip and we loved it. The small compact size of the resort is great, especially when you arrive back from a long day at the parks. I also loved the quiet tranquil setting. It even has a boat to Disney Springs which was an enjoyable and relaxing ride up the river.

I do love pofq. DH and I homeymooned there! I am considering it. Last time we went we stayed at POR and my mom didn't like how big it was.

My DD (13) and I just did a mother daughter trip in June and stayed in GF. We personally chose that because we wanted it to be something special where we wouldn't normally go (WL is "home") and didn't want to spend too much time thinking about transportation. We had a blast - may have been our favorite trip so far:) Good luck with your decision and wherever you go, have a magical time!!

I've been doing mother - daughter trips with my DD since she was 3. She is now 21. (DH is not a Disney guy.) We've also added my mom to a few of those trips. You'll enjoy Beach Club, but I have to say we had fun at all the resorts we stayed at -- Pop Century, to POFQ, to Poly, and our current favorite, BWI. Enjoy your trip together and make lots of memories.
