Hi,

we're in Florida next week doing Disney World and Universal. I just looked up the weather on Orlando Sentinel dot com and saw an article about mosquitos which kind of worried me. I cannot post the link here because it's my first posting, but you can see it if you go to the Orlando Sentinel site and click on Weather.

Now my question is: Should we take any precautions? Is it necessary to apply bug spray while in the theme parks? What do you suggest?

Thanks.

Andreas

I've never really had a problem with Mosquitos while in the theme parks. I suppose if you were sitting down near bushes or water, it could happen. Disney goes to great lengths to control bugs.

Walking around the resorts, at night, is another thing. I'd be careful about that if you are prone to mosquito bites. I'm one of those people that mosquitos just love. I am very careful about going out at night. So far this year, I've been relatively bite free. Last year, I got over 20 bites in a matter of about 5 minutes standing on my frontporch.

If you wear bug repellant, be careful about carrying the Disney shopping bags. Something in bug repellant and sunscreen breaks down the ink on the package and it can get on your clothes. They've had a lot of complaints about this.

Cutter's Advanced is a new non DEET spray that works and feels pretty good. Have to reapply every couple of hours though.

WDW sprays VERY heavily on an ongoing basis, so you typically don't notice much of a problem.
Where you will have a problem is outside of WDW.

We just got back from WDW and had quite a few mosquito bites. :confused3 My niece also got poison oak on her feet. Not sure how that happened at all!

outside the parks you'll want to wear bugspray....with all the rain and loads of puddles and standing water around it is a breeding haven for mosquitos!

Mosquitos are not generally a problem in the parks (you may be surprised at how bug-free they are, except during Love Bug season). However, we biked from our house over to Fort Wilderness two weeks ago and were absolutely eaten alive by biting flies. We still have the sores, two weeks later! AND they itch!!

Definitely bring bug spray. You probably won't need it in the parks, but you'll want it for other areas.

The only time I saw mosquitos was by the bus stop at MK at night. I was sitting on a bench by a bunch of bushes and they were all over me. I got up and walked about 10 feet from the bushes and everything was fine.

I've never had a mosquito bite in WDW before, but I got quite a few this time (June 11th-18th). The first couple of nights in Wilderness Lodge they were all in the room. But I'm guessing that housekeeping had left the balcony doors open while cleaning before we checked in, because after we (and the bellhop) killed them, we didn't have any more. But I did get quite a few bites in MK. I was standing on a Main Street sidewalk waiting for the parade, and felt that familiar sting; sure enough, a mosquito was on my leg. It wasn't bad enough that I wished I had had bug spray though.

Never fear--all the mosquitos in the Southeastern US are not at WDW right now. They can be found in my back yard, and they are eating me alive!! ;)

I agree with a previous poster--if you are prone to attract the little buggers like I am, take bug spray and use it liberally. Also, take an anti-itch ointment like hydrocortisone to soothe any bites you may get. Better safe than sorry. The mosquitos here are smart--they won't bite me where I've sprayed, but they will fly up my shorts/shirt and bite away. They drive me nuts! :earseek:

Have a great and hopefully bite free trip! :flower:

I got three bad bites on my leg at MK during the night parade almost two weeks ago. I was in Frontierland. The bites were huge and looked horrible. They still itch and I will have scars to remember them by. I think they were biting flies, too, as mosquito bites are not this bad. I only saw a few mosquitoes during the trip.

Cutters makes wipes in a large package and individual packages. I like these because we could carry them in our fanny packs without taking up a lot of room. You can usually find them in the grocery store.
