Hiya all
I would like to know what you guys consider to be the best mosquito repellent. We already have one of those energy-zapper for when youve already been bitten but hopefully, prevention will be better than the cure!!
Ive read somewhere that you can get a sun block combined with insect repellent but i seem to remember it was Avon and we leave on 10th May....which doesnt really give time to order etc

Any tips regarding the whole issue of bites, types of flying nuisances etc would be really appreciated.
Karen :)

Not sure of what brand to buy, but I was told to ensure the insect repellent contained 'DEET'. Last trip we bought Boots own brand and had no problems.

Apparently AVON Skin-so-Soft moisturiser acts as a good insect repellent too :)

To be perfectly honest with you mossies don't seem to be too much of a problem in the Orlando area.
We've been four times and not been bitten once, never thought about any repellent. Perhaps we're just lucky!!!!!!!!!!
However, I must say that last time we went with friends they went to the Everglades on an air-boat trip and they were bit to hell.:( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
I think I read somewhere that they spray the swamps with some sort of insecticide that kills them before they've even hatched. Could be just a rumour though.:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:
Anyway 16 days to go and we'll be there. Wooohooooooo:jester: :jester:

Weve also never had any problems with mosquitoes, and we went in the height of the summer!!!

You are correct in thinking that it is the "Avon skin so soft" dry oil spray, that does seem to the best IMHO if you do need a repellent.

Have a great holiday, looks like were out there the same time as you!.

Thanks for all the help everyone

Am i right in thinking this avon dry-oil spray is just a regular moisturiser? and not a mossy repellent?

I think ill buy some repellent as some people say they always use it and some say theyre always fine........knowing my luck ill fall into the first category and need some!
signtalker........i take it you dont take any when youre visiting in May then? If you see someone looking flustered with maps galore thatll be me

Hi
Boot's own brand with DEET is the best, the year i didn't use it i had 139 mossie bites, when i did use it i had none and that was with a trip on an airboat. they have there own kind without DEET but don't use that.

Go to Avon's website and you can see what they've got.

I gotta agree, the Avon SSS oil spray is the best. Please don't waste your money on those electric plug in varieties as they are c**p.

One point though.... As a fully grown man you do get strange looks from the other boys who catch you squirting this on at Blizzard Beach..... only marginally less concerning than pink bermuda shorts or a tasteful jesus sandal/sportsocks combo ;-)

LOL I shall tell DH that a pre-requisite of using the sss stuff is to wear such a fetching ensemble as jesus sandals(do they still sell them??!!!) and sports socks!!! :p

I shall visit the web site (as suggested) and see how long their delivery takes. My SIL does Avon so maybe she could get it quicker.

What is it in the dry oil spray that keeps them away then? Does it have Deet in?

Hey you really dont have long left to wait do you Aceman88888? Have fun!

I didnt buy a plug-in mossy repellent but got one of those electric current zapper things. They apparently stop the itching and discomfort of any bites but i didnt realise til i opened it that it gave you a tiny electric shock!! I am a total wimp.......but it DOES hurt and it says on the packet it doesnt! :)

Avon do a combined mosturizer and insect repellent in the Skin-So-Soft range. This is guaranteed DEET-free. Other products in the Skin-So-Soft range make no claim to repel insects.

If you know you are sensitive to mossie bites, or want to play safe, I would strongly recommend a product with DEET in it. DEET is recognised as an effective barrier to insects carrying West Nile Virus. Products are available in different strengths (eg adult formula and kid formula). A friend of mine is very sensitive to being bitten and he swears by DEET as the only thing which makes a difference. More info on DEET here.

Rob

Thanks for the info Rob and also the link..which was really helpful, especially the guidelines about deet and children etc.

I might buy some boots (plus deet) products as well as the sss stuff off the website. Playing it safe is a wise option if youre travelling all that way for the first time, i reckon :D

Last year there was a warning about a mosquito transferred disease (similar to mad cow I think - daft mosquito??!) anyway when we arrived at All Star resort there was a warning letter in our room to take extra precautions.

We didn't have any trouble during the day time, Disney spray their property regularly, but in the evening we used repellant to be on the safe side. I don't like the idea of spraying insectacide on my kids but I felt that it was the lesser of two evils last year.

Does anyone know if this diesase is still a problem?

There was a lot of coverage on US TV last year about West Nile Disease, which is potentially fatal. There had been a few outbreaks in some of the southern States, and local authorities were stepping up their mosquito spraying just in case. Was this mentioned at the All Stars? I can't recall seeing a note like this when we ckecked into the All Star Movies or the Animal Kingdom Lodge when we were there in August.

Rob

We used Boots last year every evening and the only time we got bitten was at Fantasimc before we got orund to applying the repellant.

The mossies did not seem as bad as we expected really.

Rob, we weren't actually handed the note - it had been left on our table in AS Sports. This was the middle of August last year.

Yes, Disney did have letters in their resorts asking people to take precautions against mosquitos last year - they were having to take precautions constantly against them in all their waterways.
We have been bitten in Orlando and my son had quite a reaction to the bites.
Since then, we have used Avon So Soft Woodland Original - the shower gel and spray, it definitely works!! - and also we use Jungle Formula - the roll-on is quick and simple to use.
