HI there,

I was just notified my contract went to ROFR today! My closing should be by end of October. My UY is April. When can I use the 08 points and when can I borrow the 09 points? I wanted to take a short trip in Feb 08 ( Sun-Weds) and another at the end of August 08 for 3-4 days. I will only have 35 points per UY. I will only need a studio with standard view and my home resort will be BWV. A years worth of points will only be enough for like 3 days. When will I be able to borrow the 2009 points. I hope my questions make sense!

Oh, I forgot to add that I will have 11 pts in reservation status that will expire on 04/01/08. I know that I cannot use those for regular DVC, but what can I use them for? Should I just let them go to waste or can I rent them?

Of course this is all provided I pass ROFR!

Your 2008 use year points are good for vacations scheduled between 4/1/2008 and 3/31/2009, As soon as you are in the computer (about a week after closing, give or take a few days), you can make reservations at your home resort for a stay that is up to 11 months prior to your desired check out date. If the stay begins prior to 4/1/2008, you can borrow your 2008 points. You can make a reservation at a non-home resort for a stay that is no more than 7 months from your desired check out date. All reservations are of course, subject to availability.

Your 2009 points are good for stays between 4/1/2009 and 3/31/2010. You can borrow them for any stay between 4/1/2008 and 3/31/2010.

You can't borrow points until you actually need them to make a reservation. The earliest you can call to make a reservation is 11 months prior to your check out date at your home resort and 7 months prior to check out for a non-home resort.

The February trip falls within your 2007 use year and the August trip falls within your 2008 use year.

The February trip will require 2007 use year points or you may borrow 2008 use year points. You can call to make the February reservation as soon as you are in the computer system. Getting a standard view may be difficult since you were unable to make the reservation before the 7 month window opened.

You can borrow points from your 2009 use year for the August 2008 trip (but not the February trip. You can only borrow one use year ahead). Since you want to stay at your home resort, you can call for the reservation as soon as you are in the system. By that time, the 11 month window will have opened.

They can be used for something in the Disney Collection (like a non-DVC WDW resort, a cruise on the DCL or a stay at the DLR), the Adventurer's Collection or the Concierge Collection. FWIW, I do not think there is anything that costs only 11 points for one night in the non-DVC options. Since there is a $95 fee to make a non-DVC reservation (starting 1/1/2008), and you have so few points, my advice is to just let those points go.

If you are going in Feb 08, you would be borrowing the April 08 points for that trip. You couldn't use the April 09 points until at least April 08.

You may be too late for the standard view in February, but you could get OKW which would be about the same, only two queen beds instead of one queen and one double sleeper sofa. You'd need to make the Aug 08 reservation (borrowing April 09 points) sometime in Sept at 11 months out.

You can borrow the '08 points as soon as you are in the system. In Feb you will need 11 points per night so you can only stay three nights. You will not be able to use your '09 points until April, when you will be able to borrow them. Then you will have (assuming a 3 night Feb stay) 2 '08 points and 35 '09 points available to borrow. Still only three nights in August with 4 points left over in your '09 use year. If you want to get an extra night out of it, OKW is 10 points some of those dates. You could do 3 nights in the beginning of Feb (1st-15th) borrowing 30 '08 points, and 4 nights at the end of August using your remaining 5 '08 points and borrowing all your '09 points. You would then have no points, and none coming to you in April '09, unless you borrowed your 2010 points. If you want to stay at your home resort you would need to do 2 three night stays. At least you would still have 4 points left in your '09 use year

WOW! Thank you for the great, detailed replies! I guess there is a lot that I need to learn about DVC! The 3 day stays aren't too bad and I can supplement them with stays at a regular resort which I was planning to do for the Fri and Sat nights. Is this what most DVC members do?

Besides going to a non DVC resort, you can inquire about the discount for BWV, many members pay cash for the weekends right at the resort. The members discount isn't always available, but it's a thought.

Oh well that is another thing I just learned! I didn't know that there were sometimes member discounts. Are these similar to the Annual Passholder discounts?
