I teach reading, and this is one I always have to address with my students:

Around here (Ontario, Canada), when we say words that begin with "tr", like tree or train, it comes out sounding like "ch"

"Chree" instead of "tree" and "chrain" instead of "train".

Similarly the "dr" blend sound more like "jr".

"Jrum" instead of "drum".

Whenever I get to this part of the reading lesson, it always turns into a discussion of regional accents and how sometimes we don't pronounce words exactly as they're written.

It's always fun to hear the kids trying to say "TRee," with a TR sound. It's really surprisingly difficult for us!

How are "tree" and "drum" pronounced, in your neck of the woods?

I'm in So Cal so tree and drum are just like they're written as far as I know. I'm not sure how I would write how I pronounce them because they are already written like that... not explaining very well. :)

We have someone I work with who is in Waterloo ON and you describe exactly how he pronounces them. I never really noticed the individual sounds, just that he has an accent, but you're spot on. I love listening to him, his tone of voice coupled with his accent if very comforting, like a hug from a hot chocolate. Hahah

If you did that around here you'd be singing a different chune.:sunny:

The same. I'm from NY.

I live in the mid Southern US. The words train, tree & drum are pronounced as written; however, depending on the speaker, sometimes it does sound as if an extra syllable has been added to the middle of the word.

Tra-ai-an. Tree-ee-ee. Dru-u-m.

But that can be true for almost any word down here. ;-)

Same pronunciation here - Northeast Wisconsin and was the same growing up in Northern Illinois.

I don't know any state that pronounces it any different than just like it looks - anywhere we've been anyway!

My BFF always seems to put extra r's in her pronunciation of words but I always figure it's because she's closer to the UP of Michigan than I am. Michiganders on here, I think, would know what I'm talking about. ;) :rotfl:

When my ds was young he pronounced turkey- churkey. We were worried he had a speech impediment.
