I would have used my cell phone to vid her rant then tell her if she didnt stop it was going to be all over youtube

I have a feeling this is not her first time doing this and she got all ticked off cause someone actually stood up to her.

You were fine, she was wrong and rude. That said, if there were plenty of other seats, I'd have moved to avoid conflict for everyone. Not saying you should have moved, it's just what I would have done.

I wouldn't have moved, and I think that it reaffirms what everyone is saying here that the manager told you he was sorry you dealt with that. Sounds like you kept your cool

true, some people may view this as being a pushover, i view it as choosing what, who and when i deal with matters of importance in my life and it wouldn't have been that, her and then.

same with all kinds of situations.... tailgaters...i move out of the way if possible. rude or smelly people..i leave the area
the list goes on and on. i can control what i do, so thats how i manage myself.

Well, actually, some theaters inside a local movie place do have reserved seating... at an additional cost They also provide food service in those theaters.

Well, respectfully, that other party arrived in the theater before you did and chose seats before you arrived.

While it would have been a less-enjoyable family experience, couldn't one parent have sat with the two children in the three seats, and the other parent sat on the other side of the party already in place?

Several years ago when the first Harry Potter movie came out, my family went to see it. There were four of us. The theater was packed. There were three empty seats and then a lady and her husband and then on empty seat after them. I asked the lady politely if they wouldn't mid scooting down one seat to open up the 4 seats so we could all sit together. She was very rude and said "No. We were here first and this is where we're staying." So, DD and I sat in two of the seats and DH and DS had to go sit somewhere else where there were two seats together.

It really bummed me out that the lady could not scoot down one seat to make room. So, asking someone nicely if they could scoot over one seat I have no problem with and would do that any time if someone asked me. .

I think this is quite different than the OP, where there were lots of seats and the person wanted that specific seat. In your case, the smart thing to do would be just to sit your family down in the 3 seats, one of you crawl over them to sit in the empty chair on the other side. Then you could pass popcorn etc. over their heads.

I would defend the non-mover though on the off chance maybe the person on the other side of the empty seat stank, the person in front of the empty seat was wearing a hat, there was soda spilled, etc.

For me personally, the seat I sit in at a movie theater isn't really very important to me....so if someone asked me to move over, or up a row, or down a row, I probably would.

I do think that woman described in the op was over the top and very dramatic about the whole thing....going to get the manager, etc. etc. I think maybe she needed to grow up a bit.

I would move if the theater was crowded and a family came in who needed me to move down a few seats in order to sit together.

I would not move if I was sitting in a seat that someone wanted just because they liked that particular seat. We have seats that we really like too and usually get there early enough to get them. But when we don't, we sit wherever we can.

I think the lady liked the OP's seats and expected the world to revolve around her and that she would get them.

And probably has in the past many times. Hence the reason her friend/son had the intimidation stare down, didn't think twice about telling OP to move, etc...

The only time I know there are reserved seating is when it's a birthday party here & that is only if it's what is expected to be a popular movie. I've done ones both ways. They always take you in early -- one time they just said "sit where you want" & the last one was for Night of the Museum 2 on opening day -- they had a row roped off for us (along with rows roped off for the 4 other birthday parties attending too!).

In general it's first come, first serve around here.

i used to work @ a movie theatre and on nights when shows were sold out i'd have to go in and ask people to move down to make room sometimes (like if there was an empty seat beside them) i HATED doing that because if it were me i would NOT want to move.

i can't imagine being asked to move when there are plenty of seats left though! that's insane!!

Here's the only problem I have with that. It rewards the obnoxious behavior! Maybe the reason she persisted so long and so vehemently is that this method usually works. In the past, she had probably 'learned' that she could eventually wear people down or get them to the point where it wasn't worth the fight or the aggravation and people gave in to her. She was probably certain that if she kept it up long enough and loudly enough she would get what she wanted! I'm actually glad to hear that in this case, it just didn't work!

I would not have moved. I really don't care where I sit as long as I can see but if someone came in late and just acted like I needed to move because they liked my seat better than others available then they could go pound sand. I have moved befoe and will move again but not becasue someone tries to intimidate me.

My response would have been..."Yeah, I know what you mean. I have that same issue with my eyes....that's why I love these seats. Means I have to get here a lot earlier but at least I know I can get seats where I can see with my nasty old eyes!! Sorry, but I can't move, but you'll understand since you deal with the same issue." Period.

Good for you OP! I wouldn't have moved either. We go to the movies frequently & we have certain seats we like, too. We get there very early so we can get those seats. I won't move for late comers either. The only things I would do is maybe move to the other side of DH or we might move down 1 seat only (but I wouldn't give up an aisle seat).

Ushers here will ask you to move down a seat or 2 if there is a vacant seat on either side of you. That is reasonable to me. And since seating is not guaranteed, I think they are allowed to do that.

But this just shows more of that entitlement that's out there... "I want it, you've got it, give it to me" I just don't get it.

Seriously, though - there are about fourteen screens in this one theater (sorry, the word 'screen' was escaping me yesterday ). Usually ten of them are 'regular' shows, where you go in, buy your ticket, head to the right room, find a seat, watch the movie.

A few, depending on the popularity of the movie, cost a few dollars more (example $12 vs $8) and provide the patrons with reserved seating in the appropriate room, and food service by an employee designated to provide it.

There's a restaurant and bar in the lobby as well

No I would not of given up my perfectly good spoy. It was rude of her to expect you to move. We always get to the movies at least a half hour before movie starts just so we would have a good seat.
