Ok, I petered out on ideas for Joe's 40th birthday gift. He's definitely getting the massage at SSR and I'm sending him off to Richard Petty for a morning. I thought of all the suggestions I got here and dropped thoughts around him and he kept wrinkling his nose at the ideas.

What do you guys think of the following. Only one of them though!:

1. A new suit. He never really has to wear suits that much. The two that he has are outdated AND way too big for him. I thought a really nice suit might be a good idea. Plus, he can wear it to V&A when we go rather than slacks and sport jacket.

2. A LCD projector. He watched me using one while giving a presentation at a recent presentation. He announced he'd love one for his class (he's a teacher).

Both are in the same price range so that's not the issue. I'm thinking suit, but my friends have said nuh huh, LCD. So you guys can help me figure it out.

And if you know LCD projector's what's a good model in the $650-1000 range???

ETA: We never ever go over the top for our birthdays but because it's our 40th this year, I want to splurge on him just this once.

Hi Rick... :wave2:

I'd get him the LCD projector especially since he told you that he wanted one...

Maybe you can do the suit for an early Xmas present????

Crap. I am of no help. I love both those ideas.

If I HAVE to pick one, I say the projector because he would get more use out of it.

But the suit is romantic. Maybe you can do the one you don't do for his birthday another time.

Projector, but I hate getting clothes as gifts.

No clothes! If he wants a suit I am sure he can buy one.

Not a gift - but what I did for my sister. For about a year I bought every 40th birthday card I could find - including overseas. I sent her a different 40th birthday card everyday (I still lived in SF) for about six weeks before her birthday.

I've also seen where someone send the info to all of their friends asking them to send a card or email on the special day.

You could just leave a new one on the pillow each day.

I think this is excellent advice!

If he's a gadget hound, I say projector as well.

Can I have you talk to my DH about MY 40th birthday?

So far, everything you have in mind sounds good to me!

As for the suit, with a nice french cuffed shirt and new cuff links and a nice tie... you get the pleasure of looking at him in it. Hmm, just the thought of the present he might get after V&A... (Can I say that on a Disney chat board?) I love a man in a suit. Can you tell?

But, the projector is practical and it reminds me that I promised my kids that I'd bring the one home from work so we can have a "drive in" movie some night for them and a couple of friends. They are nice to have and compact enough for him to bring back and forth to work.

I think either one is a nice gift. If he hardly wears suits, the fact that he has a killer one sitting in the closet isn't a big thrill. The fact that he'd use the projector each day would remind him of how wonderful you are every time he turns it on.

At my job, I bought 2 of them this year and one last year. They were In Focus machines that I bought from PCConnection.

As for my DH's 40th, I had our 3 bathrooms tiled for his birthday last year. He hasn't said anything yet about my hints yet. I turn 40 in September.

As a joke, you can get him a bottle of Old Fart wine. That's my standard joke for milestone birthdays. Plus, it isn't horrible either.
