More Adventures in WDW: June, November and December Trip Reports

YaY for another trip coming up!

I'm loving the review of Universal. I keep throwing it back and forth about going if/when we go in March. I really want to go to Harry Potter land, but I'm afraid the crowds will stil lbe pretty hectic. I have also been considering trying deluxe dining plan, which throws the extra money towards that instead.

Way back when I first went to Universal, I think it was 1995, I beleive there was a regular parking lot. I think in 1997 when I went they may have been starting to build the garage, but I don't think it was in use if my memory serves me right. In 1999 it was in use. They were still working on IOA at that time, so I have yet to get over there, and it has now been over 10 years since I've been to Universal as well. But I have to say I liked it much better than MGM (now HS).

We were just at Universal last Thursday and did MIB, Simpson, and Mummy rides. We didn't know what to expect with the Mummy one but we did agree the other ones spun you and threw you way too many times in a pretty violent manner. We were so happy we rode them before lunch as we would have probably lost it if we did them after.

Those plans look fantastic! I can't wait to see all your holiday pictures!

Thanks. I can't wait to take them. :santa:

:rotfl::rotfl: It's cute when your 2, when your 30 they start banning you from parks, and I already can't go to Knottsberry farm :rotfl:

Ohh I hope you're going in December before I am so I can oogle your always awesome pictures of Kidani - where we're staying. :cool1:

Oh yeah, and that you have a nice trip too I suppose :rolleyes1

Yes, we will be there and back before your trip, but I make no promises that I'll be able to get to the Kidani pics before you leave since I still have the November to get through before I want to start December. I think I'll post some teaser pics when I get back though so you can at least see some before you go.

Your plans sound wonderful! I love the holiday storytellers and the Candlelight Processional is just so beautiful! I can't wait to see the pics! :goodvibes

Thanks. I'm looking forward to the Candlelight Processional since it's been a long time since we've seen the show all the way through.

Your plans for December sounds amazing!! I so want to go at the Holiday time someday!!!

Thanks. I hope you do get to come down to Disney for the Holidays sometime. I bet you'd love it.

Glad that you're enjoying the Universal report. We had a great time. I really want to get back over there sometime to do Islands of Adventure and see the Harry Potter stuff, but I'm not excited about the crowds either. Maybe someday...

I was really surprised how rough a lot of the rids at Universal were. I don't think I've ever been so sore after going to a theme park than after going on so many rides that jostled you around like that. I still had a lot of fun though.

I hope everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving, and are having a wonderful weekend. For your reading pleasure this Holiday weekend, here is second half of my mini trip report of my and Buzz’s first visit to Universal Studios:

lucyricky-600.jpg

After meeting the Simpsons, I noticed a couple of characters from another of my all-time favorite television shows- I Love Lucy. I had heard that Lucy Ricardo came out pretty regularly at Universal, but I had no idea that Ricky would be out, so it was a wonderful surprise. This was defiantly my favorite character encounter of the trip. Both of them were so perfectly in character and chatted for a while.

marilyn-600.jpg

Nearby, Marilyn Monroe was out and about greeting fans as well.

shrek4d-600.jpg

After hob-knobbing with the stars, Buzz and I headed over to Shrek 4-D. Honestly, I’m not a Shrek fan at all, but we figured as long as we were in Universal we might as well check it out. If this wasn’t the longest wait of the day it sure felt like it. I was pretty much over the whole attraction about half-way through the preshow. The movie itself wasn’t that great either. It wasn’t that funny, and I wasn’t prepared for how much they really jostle your seats around. All in all, it was one of the low points of the day. If you like Shrek, you’ll probably like this attraction, but I didn’t.

diego-600.jpg

After Shrek, we decided to go get some lunch, so we headed towards Mel’s Drive-In. On the way, I spotted Dora the Explorer’s friend Diego had no line, so I went to meet him.

julieandrewsstar-600.jpg

All up and down their Hollywood Boulevard, they have a Walk of Fame with a number of famous movie stars. I thought the Disney fans here might appreciate Julie Andrew’s star.

mels-600.jpg

Before we got to the park, we knew we wanted to have lunch at Mel’s Drive-In, based on the one from American Graffiti. We both got burgers and fries which we thought were good. The ‘50s diner atmosphere complete with rock and roll music and retro memorabilia everywhere was fun.

mysterymachine-600.jpg

After lunch, we spotted Scooby-Doo and Shaggy riding up the street in the Mystery Machine, so I went to meet them again. A lot of the Universal characters seemed to have vehicals that were driven down the street and stop at their meet-and-greet area, which was pretty fun. The Mystery Machine was probably my favorite though. I think the line to get pictures with it was longer than the line to see Scooby and Shaggy.

lucytribute1-600.jpg

Being an I Love Lucy fan, one of the things I’ve always wanted to see at Universal was always the “Lucy: A Tribute” exhibit. I was so glad that after all these years and so many other changes to the park, it was still there when I finally made it to Universal. It was so great to see all of the props, costumes and memorabilia from the show as well as the rest of Lucy’s career. A must-see for any Lucy fan!

lucytribute2-600.jpg

Some actual I Love Lucy scripts

lucytribute3-600.jpg

One of Desi's drums.

crow-600.jpg

Since it was October, the whole park was decorated for Holloween Horror Nights.

shrekdonkey-600.jpg

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not a Shrek fan at all, but I heard that the meet-and-greet with Donkey was fun, so I gave it a try. Donkey was pretty cool. He’s some sort of interactive animatronic that talks to you a la Turtle Talk with Crush and could really work a crowd.

hollywoodhotel-600.jpg

More of Universal’s great architecture.

docbrown-600.jpg

Standing among some props from the Back to the Future films was Doc Brown who chatted with me about his new inventions.

blursbrothers-600.jpg

Soon after, the Blues Brothers drove up in their police car and headed off to do a show with their band on the New York Street, so Buzz and I headed over to see them.

fionadonkey-600.jpg

After the show, I spotted Fiona out with Donkey, so I decided to pay Donkey another visit.

monatershow-600.jpg

Next, we headed off to see the Universal Studios Horror Make-Up Show. This really wasn’t something I thought would be that interesting, but Buzz and I were reading before the trip that it was not to be missed, so we gave it a try. First of all, the waiting area was pretty cool- lots of displays of props, prosthetics and behind the scenes info about Universal monster and horror films. Then, the show itself was a lot of fun- plenty of comedy to keep it light and entertaining. I’m glad we knew to give it a try!

nicktoonblash-600.jpg

Next up was Jimmy Neutron’s Nicktoon Blast. This was ok. It didn’t really “wow” us, but it wasn’t a bad ride.

spongebob-600.jpg

After the ride, I got to meet my last character of the day- Spongebob Squarepants.

twistercow-600.jpg

Next, we decided to try Twister. We both thought this was pretty lame. Some of the special effects were kind of cool, but all in all I don’t see us revisiting this one.

We still had some time to so a few more rides before closing time, so we decided to revisit a few of our favorites. We hit The Mummy first and then headed back down the New York Street.

newyorkalley-600.jpg

Again, all the Backlot city sets in the park were amazing, They were so much fun to explore and photograph.

pumpkins-600.jpg

A few more Halloween decorations along the way.

krustysign-600.jpg

Since the waits were pretty short, we had just enough time to hit the Simpsons Ride and then go next door and take one last ride on Men In Black.

mibshop-600.jpg

I still love the architecture around Men In Black. It reminds me so much of what Tomorrowland looked like back when I was a kid.

universalarch-600.jpg

After Men In Black, it was closing time, so we made our way out the park and take the long moving sidewalk ride back to the car.

All in all, despite a few duds (Shrek and Twister), we really enjoyed Universal. It really has a different feel than Disney, but I thought that attention to detail and attraction quality in general were fantastic. Plus, the crowds were so light we were able to do almost everything in that was open that way. The whole trip was even better than I expected, and I would love to come back here sometime and make it over to Islands of Adventure too.

Hope you enjoyed this quick look at our day at Universal. Coming up next though, I’ll be taking the report back to Disney for a look at our day at the Animal Kingdom.

Next chapter: Beginning with some Magical Moments

Your Dec. trip plans sound good. Looks like there will be lots of fun new things to do. That's always one of the neat things about going back to WDW all the time...there's always something new to try! Kidani Village is amazing and we love mini golfing!

Great Universal updates. I still think the best part of Universal now is WWOHP.

I really enjoyed your Universal updates! I didn't realize how many different characters they had there. It looks like a lot of fun :goodvibes

Thanks. I'm so glad we found some new things to do this time around. Kidani should be so cool, and mini golf should be fun. We haven't gone mini golfing anywhere in a long time, so it should be fun trying it again all together.

I still want to go to see the Wizarding World. It does look really cool.

Universal had so many fun characters. After so many trips to Disney lately and only finding only a couple of new characters (if that) over an entire trip, it was cool to be able to find over 20 characters I'd never seen before in the course of one day.

Hi Meeko!

I love your trip report as usual! It was neat to see the pics from Universal Studios. We haven't been there in years. Love the pic of Lucy and Ricky; so convincing:)

Teresa

Thanks for the Universal update. Great to see it. One time when I went, years back, Twister was brand new, and I thought it was lame too. Do they still have the earthquake ride? I always liked that one, but I think it's gone now.

I have to agree that Universal does a great job with the details and there were absolutely no crowds when I went last October. A lot of the rides were just one time for me but some were really cool...Loved the Simpson ride LOL...the part that mocks POTC...well I laughed hysterically I almost cried LOL!!!

Glad you guys had a great day there!!!!!!

Glad you enjoyed it. Lucy and Ricky were really wonderful- one of the highlights of the day. It was almost like they had jumped right off the tv screen. I was so glad that I got to see them both.

You're welcome, and I'm glad you liked it. Glad to know that we're not the only ones who thought Twister was lame. And I think they do still have Earthquake, but it's called "Disaster" instead. We were going to do it, but it had a 45 minute wait when everything else was 10 minutes or less, so we skipped it. If we make it back sometime I think that will be near the top of the priority list.

Your trip reflections post was very helpful.
Thanks

You're very welcome. :)

We loved the Simpsons ride too. All the parodies and jokes were so great. They did a fantastic job with that one. :thumbsup2

Well, it’s hard to believe that we’re already into single digits! We still have some time left before the trip begins, but the planning is done and I’m going to be pretty busy between now and the trip, so I think it’s about time to wrap this pre-trip up. Here’s a few last thoughts about the trip before I sign off:

We’ve decided to try and keep our resort/ mini-golf day a relaxing one and pretty open as far as scheduling goes. We’re not doing any ADRs and playing where we eat by ear. We were talking about maybe doing lunch at either Big River Grill at the Boardwalk or the Captain’s Grille at the Yacht Club. We’ve never been to the Captain’s Grille before, so it might be nice to give it a try. It doesn’t look to hard to get into without an ADR and it doesn’t look like Big River takes them at all. We were also talking about maybe trying the new Pollo Campero at Downtown Disney for dinner. As far as Winter Summerland, we figure we’ll plan to go in the morning unless the weather isn’t looking good. Otherwise, we’ll just wait it out and rearrange the plans a little.

I haven’t really talked about characters besides Duffy too much in this pre-trip, but based on the current listings I’ve seen online, I’m really hoping to find Donald Duck in his Caballero outfit this time around. He apparently has a brand-new backdrop that looks really nice, so it should make a nice photo opportunity. We’ll be in Mexico anyway for lunch, so hopefully he won’t be too difficult to find. I’m also hoping to get pictures of Chip and Dale and the Beast if I can since I haven’t found them on the last couple of trip along with anyone else I can manage to find. Maybe I’ll get lucky like my past few trips and find some random characters over by Innoventions.

Buzz and I didn’t really plan out a new music playlist for the drive to Disney this time around, so we decided to just reuse our Christmas mix from last year. It still works since it has a number of songs that are played at Disney over the Holiday season (especially EPCOT), so we didn’t feel the need to try and reinvent the wheel. The whole playlist is listed out in last year’s pre-trip, so if you would like to check it out click here.

We’re still not sure what the weather is going to do. Hopefully it won’t be as wet as last year, but we’ll be prepared and bring some ponchos anyway. It has been getting to get a little cooler down here in Florida and is supposed to get cooler every day, so we may need to break out our jackets and coats. If it is cold, at least it will make it feel a little more like Christmas.

Well, I think that should do it for this pre-trip. Once I’m back, I’ll get started on our Animal Kingdom day trip and then I’ll be able to start the December report. I can't believe I'm already a trip behind, but I guess I can live with that. ;) "See" you all in December!

Have fun!..I have to ask though...Who is DuffY? I keep seeing that name here and there, but can't figure out who he is?

I super  I Love Lucy! I always have to visit there when I'm at Universal (which isn't often.)

December is almost here!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to let you know what I’m back from Disney again and had another fantastic time. We tried some new things, revisited some old favorites, and saw tons of Christmas decorations and entertainment. I can’t wait to start on the report, but I’ll have to since I want to finish (start?) Buzz and my November day trip to the Animal Kingdom first before I start on December. That will be a fun report too though, so I’m not too disappointed. Hopefully I’ll have the first chapter of our Animal Kingdom day up within the next few days. However, for those of you who want a sneak peek of December, I’ve updated the first post of this thread with a brief description of what we did and a few little pictures for you.

Have fun!..I have to ask though...Who is DuffY? I keep seeing that name here and there, but can't figure out who he is?

Thanks.

Duffy is Mickey's teddy bear. He's been around for a while as "Disney Bear", but he's just been reintroduced as "Duffy" this year and is everywhere at Disney now, especially EPCOT where he does a meet-and-greet. He's apparently very popular in Japan and one of the most popular characters at Tokyo Disneyland, so I'm assuming Disney is trying to make him a big name here as well.

I super  I Love Lucy! I always have to visit there when I'm at Universal (which isn't often.)

December is almost here!

Another Lucy fan! :thumbsup2 The Tribute and characters were so much fun to see- they were among my favorite things we saw at Universal too.

With the Universal mini-trip and December pre-trip completed, let’s begin Buzz and my November day trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom!

wdwentrancenov-600.jpg

After an early morning of driving, Buzz and I arrived at Walt Disney World a little before 8am. We hardly ever manage to make it to the Animal Kingdom before rope drop and really wanted to be there for it this time, so we gave ourselves plenty of time to get there. Before we even got out of the car, we had our first Magical Moment. After paying for parking, the cast member at the toll booth handed us a little certificate that proclaimed us as an “Honorary Family” of the day and directed us to a special lot of Magical Moments Parking which was right next to the entrance of the park! It was such a cool surprise. We had never gotten a certified “Magical Moment” before, so this was really a special thing for us. I didn't even know they did this.

akentrancetree1-600.jpg

After parking, we went through security and into the Entrance courtyard. We had plenty of time before the park opened, so we spent some time checking out the Christmas tree. Even though I’m not a huge fan of Christmas decorations and festivities before Thanksgiving, I was glad that the park was almost completely ready for Christmas since we hadn’t been to the Animal Kingdom during the Holidays in years.

akentrancetree2-600.jpg

The toys around the tree were as fun to look at as the tree. The only disappointment was that last time we were here there was one of Meeko, but it didn’t seem to be out this year. :confused3 The ones they had out were great though.

akentrancetree3-600.jpg

A few of the ornaments.

akentrancetree5-600.jpg

It’s not often you see sometime Kanga and Roo related in the parks (outside of the Pooh ride at Magic Kingdom, of course).

akentrancetree6-600.jpg

akentrancetree7-600.jpg

akentrancetree8-600.jpg

The baby elephant from The Jungle Book in rocking horse form.

akentrancetree9-600.jpg

One of my favorite from The Lion King- Pumbaa!

akentrancetree10-600.jpg

Jiminy Cricket was a new addition to the tree since I’ve been to Animal Kingdom at Christmas last, I think.

akentrancefrog-600.jpg

Nearby, this tree frog was keeping an eye on the Rainforest Cafe menu.

akentrancewreath-600copy.jpg

More Christmas decorations.

After exploring for a bit, we noticed that lines were beginning to form at the turnstiles and went to join them. A little while later, we were brought into the park to wait for the “Adventure Begins” rope drop ceremony.

adventurebegins1-600.jpg

We had never seen this show but had been meaning to for quite some time. It was a pretty cute way to start out a day at the Animal Kingdom and one of the better rope drop ceremonies at the parks.

adventurebegins2-600.jpg

Minnie and Mickey double check their list of things to bring with them on their adventure.

adventurebegins3-600.jpg

Pluto is excited.

adventurebegins4-600.jpg

Finally, the proclaim “Let the adventure begin!”

adventurebegins5-600.jpg

adventurebegins6-600.jpg

After the ceremony, all the guests were escorted through the Oasis and into Discovery Island and beyond.

walktoafrica1-600.jpg

Of course, we had to take a few obligatory photos of the Tree of Life along the way.

walktoafrica2-600.jpg

walktoafrica3-600.jpg

Our next destination of the morning was Africa to begin the day with a little safari.

walktoafrica4-600.jpg

Welcome to Harambe!

walktoafrica5-6002.jpg

The architecture and sense of place in Harambe is really fantastic.

Having made it through rope drop, we made it to our first attraction of the day!

Next chapter: Animal Encounters in Africa

You know I always love your pictures and your AK ones do not disappoint! :thumbsup2 I can't wait for more!

:cool1: for starting your day with a Magical Moment. Little touches of magic make a great Disney day even better :goodvibes

Great pictures of the AK Christmas decorations! I really need to plan a trip when the holiday decorations are out. I really want to see them for myself.

Thanks Dawn. Glad you enjoyed all the pictures. :)

It really was such a fantastic surprise to get that Magical Moment. We couldn't believe it!

Thanks LL. I hope you get to Disney for Christmas someday. The parks and resorts look so beautiful all decorated for the season.
