More Adventures in WDW: June, November and December Trip Reports

And actually, the jacket from Mary Poppins was actually the one worn by Michael, not Bert. Bert's jacket is hidden away in, of all places, Sid Cahuenga's at Hollywood Studios. And it's for sale too! I'll be posting a picture of it later in the report.

You know, I always tell myself to go into Sids but for some reason, I never do. That is the best reason to and I definately will next time! Thanks for that info! :goodvibes

Cool pictures from Planet Hollywood. We have never been there so it was interesting to see your photos. Looks like they have a lot of neat stuff! And yes, I definitely remember Sabrina. I used to love that show.

Sorry...I'm behind a little (hubby had surgery on Wednesday and I'm behind on all of my threads). Love the pics of he outfits at Planet Hollywood. We've never been to the one at Disney (we dined at the one in Chicago and Las Vegas and were not impressed so we've avoided the one at DTD).

Glad you got to see the fireworks at CSR.

Definitely check out Sid's next time. They always have a ton of interesting currios for sale- props, cotumes, posters, photos and tons of autographs. It's as much of a gallery as it is a shop.

Sabrina was one of my favorites back in the day- it and Boy Meets World.

I hope your husband is doing well after his surgery.

I believe our server told us that the one at Disney is the biggest Planet Hollywood in the world, so I'm guessing it has more stuff than your usual Planet Hollywood. I can't say that the food was any better than any other Planet Hollywood in the world, but we thought that the sandwhiches we had were good and that in a whole the experience was a lot of fun.

Seeing the fireworks at Coronado was so awesome. I'm glad we got to see them too.

For Buzz and I, Day Two began bright and early since was our day to spend at our favorite park, The Magic Kingdom. We got up as quietly as possible to not disturb Goofy, and started getting ready for the day. We broke tradition a little for this trip, and instead of having breakfast at the resort food court as usual, we just brought some breakfast foods with us to have in the room. It worked out really well. Not only was it cheaper, but it also saved time since one of us was getting ready, the other could be eating. No waiting for everyone to get ready and then head down for breakfast! Since we’re not usually big breakfast eaters anyway, I think we may just keep doing this in the future (except if we stayed at French Quarter; I’d make an exception for some beignets).

Buzz and I headed to the bus stop, and within a few minutes, an empty bus arrived. We were beginning to think that we would be the only people on every bus of the trip, but we did pick up a few more people at the next few stops.

mkentrance1-600.jpg

In no time, we had made it to the Magic Kingdom! We were able to quickly exchange our AAA vouchers for park tickets, and were ready to hit that park! Unfortunately, the park wasn’t ready for us since there was almost an hour left before it officially opened for the day.

mkentrance2-600.jpg

While we waited around, we took a few pictures.

mkentrance3-600.jpg

8:10am! Only 40 minutes until the start of the Welcome show. After we were let through the turnstiles we waited around and listened to the background music loop for the entrance area. Once we heard the whole thing all the way through, we knew that it was about time for the opening ceremonies to begin.

mkwelcome1-600.jpg

Finally, the Mayor and some of the citizens of Main Street came out to wish us a “Good Mornin’”.

mkwelcome2-600.jpg

mkwelcome3-600.jpg

The train came in front Toontown with some Disney characters to help open the park. I don’t think that I’d seen Chip and Dale’s Tomorrowland outfits before.

mkwelcome4-600.jpg

Once the rope was dropped, we headed under the train station and down Main Street USA.

mainstreetmorning1-600.jpg

It looked like it was going to be a beautiful morning. I didn't get a picture of it, but right in the middle of Main Street among the crowd of people were Mary Poppins and Bert on their way to Fantasyland. I'd never seen them do that before, but it was such a cute touch.

mainstreetmorning2-600.jpg

Some of the second stories of Main Street. After getting back from the trip, I noticed the window on the right has Roy E. Disney’s name.

mainstreetmorning3-600.jpg

Instead of taking the usual route for going all the way to The Hub and entering Tomorrowland from the main bridge, we decided to take the “short cut” and walk past the Plaza Restaurant and the Noodle Station to get there. I don’t know if it got us there any faster, but it didn’t take us as far out of the way.

astroorbiter-600.jpg

We walked through Tomorrowland on the way to the first ride of the trip…

spacemountain1-600.jpg

Space Mountain. When we got there, the line already seemed to be overflowing out the building. We didn’t know how long of a wait we would be in for since the Standby wait times didn’t appear to be posted yet, but we got in line anyway and hoped that it wouldn’t be too long of a wait. It turned out that the only reason that the line stretched outside the indoor queue was because it seemed to be taking a long time to measure all the kids. Once we got into the door, it was pretty empty. Within 10 or so minutes, we were boarding out rockets.

spacemountain2-600.jpg

This was our first time going on Space Mountain again since it’s big refurbishment last year. The queue looked great. Referring to it as “Spaceport Seventy-Five” was a nice touch since it references the attraction’s opening year. The queue looked great. None of the new games were operating since the line really wasn’t stretching down to that point yet. The only thing I missed were the stars and asteroids you could see above you near the end of the queue which now appear to be gone. The ride was nice as usual. It’s certainly not the most thrilling coaster at Disney, but it has some cool effects along the way. The only really noticeable change was that they now take your picture on the ride.

spacemountain3-600.jpg

It seemed like there were a few changes to the post-show as well, which I thought was a nice improvement. It actually feels more like a continuation of the story now and has a few surprises along the way.

spacemounain4-600.jpg

All in all, the enhancements to Space Mountain were nice and I enjoyed seeing them, but I still think that it’s my least favorite of the Disney World Mountains.

tomorrowlandsign-600.jpg

After the ride, Buzz headed off to ride Space Ranger Spin a few times, while I made my way out of Tomorrowland.

Next chapter: Lots of characters including Disney’s newest Prince and Princess.

I have heard alot of mixed reviews on the space Mountain refurb. I rode it in 1997 and 1999 and then not again till 2009. I think it got "lighter" inside the last time I rode it. Also alot more jerky. I hope the refurb made it go darker again and less jerky.

I love the pictures of rope drop! The "good morning" ceremony at the Magic Kingdom is one of my very favorite things! :goodvibes

Space Mountain is always a great way to start a day at the MK. :thumbsup2 I didn't really notice any changed either other than the games they added to the queue. :confused3

beignets for breakfast sound heavenly!

I've been on SM twice now since refurb and its definately a lot darker than it used to which makes it feel faster. Still a bit jerky but I loved it.

I don't know if it's any less jerky than it ever was, but it certainly seemed darker. There were a lot of points where you couldn't see anything at all in front of you.

The Welcome show is such a fantastic way to start of a day at the Magic Kingdom. Glad you enjoyed the pictures.

Yeah, I think the ride was pretty much the same just refreshed, which is ok. I really wasn't expecting that many changes outside of the queue anyway. The only disappointment was that the stars and asteroids above the queue near the loading area appeared to be gone. It was always fun to see them, especially from the TTA.

Beignets are an awesome breakfast. Of course, they make a good snack, side dish or dessert too, but we usually stick to having them at breakfast.

You have arrived at MK!!

I really hope to catch Mary & Bert in September. I've seen some really cute pictures of them recently.

YAY for arriving at MK!! I have to agree with you, I really enjoyed the queue at Space Mountain after the refurb! I am not a big Space Mountain fan, but it has been greatly improved!

Dinner at Planet Hollywood sounded awesome!! I love movie memorobillia!!! Thanks for sharing the Wizard of Oz stuff, that is one of my all time favorite movies!

I'm so excited to finally get to the Magic Kingdom portion of the trip report.

Here's hoping Mary and Bert are still out then. It was great to have them both back in the Magic Kingdom. And just so you know, this is far from their only appearence in the report. There's more of Mary and Bert on the way. :)

The queue was pretty cool- in a whole, better than it was before.

Glad you enjoyed the pics of Planet Hollywood. I didn't even know they had Wizard of Oz costumes there, so it was a big surprise when we were seated not too far from them.

Mark is doing much better (back at work)...thanks.

Love the update. I love the pre-show at the train station and we make a point of catching it once each trip if possible. I've not decided if I'm going to do Space Mountain or not this year. It was, obviously, closed while we were there last year, but Mark can't do any coasters this trip and I don't know if I really want to do it solo. I think it will be a play it by ear thing. I love the pics of Main Street.

Good to hear that he's ok.

I really like the Welcome show at the train station as well. If we can make it, we always try to see it. Glad you enjoyed the Main Street pictures. I really enjoyed posting them. While I was writing that part of the chapter, I was listening to some of the background music from Main Street, and it really took me back there. :cloud9:

As far as Space Mountain, I don't know if I would find it worth it to ride Space Mountain solo. Like I said though, it's not one of my favorite rides in the park so that might have something to do with it. Playing it by ear when you get there sounds like a good idea.

Hi Meeko,

All caught up now. Sounds like you had a good time at Planet Hollywood - it's a place we've never been to before, but it looks pretty cool.

The rope drop looks fun, we're hoping to make it for the one at MK this trip - fingers crossed!

Hey Di!

Planet Hollywood was a lot of fun. I wouldn't say it's my most recommended restaurant at Downtown Disney, but I really enjoyed it.

Rope drop at MK is a must-see. You've never done it before? Hope you get to see it this time around.

castletrees-600.jpg

After Buzz and I split up in Tomorrowland, I headed back towards the Hub. Since a few of the characters I wanted to see on this trip were pretty popular (namely the Princess and the Frog characters in Liberty Square and Little Mermaid characters in Adventureland), I figured getting there as close to their first meet-and-greet of the day the better. On my way to the other side of the park, I noticed that Cinderella’s Stepfamily, The Tremaines, were greeting in Fairytale Garden. Since the wait to see them looked short, I figured I could spare a little time to meet them.

tremaines-6006.jpg

The Tremaines were great, as usual. Along with posing for a picture, they also agreed to be in a little video as well that I told them could be sent to any eligible princes out there. They really pressed me if I knew any in particular, but seemed a little disappointed that I didn’t know any princes personally. Anastasia did mention that she would like for Hercules and Tarzan to see the video if possible.

To view the Ladies Tremaine’s video message, click here!

The trio bid me adieu and I headed off to find some not-so-eligible princes and princesses elsewhere in the Kingdom.

lschristmasstore-600.jpg

Since I had never met the characters from The Princess and the Frog before, I figured I would start in Liberty Square and see them first. On the way to their location, I paused briefly to get a shot of the nearby Christmas store. I never think to take many pictures of the beautiful architecture in Liberty Square.

tiananaveen1-600.jpg

I got to Tiana’s Garden Glen a little more than 20 minutes before the first scheduled meet-and-greet and was the second party in line. The wait went by quickly thanks to the family in front of me who was very friendly and chatty. They also liked to meet characters, so we talked about that among other things. As time went on, the line began to grow until Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen finally arrived.

tiananaveen2-600.jpg

This was my first time meeting Tiana and Naveen, and I thought that they were great and perfectly in character. I loved that Tiana still used 1920s phrases like “the bee’s knees” and such and didn’t just talk like most of the other princesses in the park.

tiananaveen3-6006.jpg

tiananaveen4-6002.jpg

The two even agreed to agree to get individual shots taken as well. As I was about to take the picture, Naveen started teasing Tiana by telling her not to blink which made her a little worried. She didn’t blink though, and her picture turned out fine.

tiananaveen5-600.jpg

Naveen strikes a pose as part of the “photo shoot” as he called it.

tiananaveenauto-600.jpg

First new autographs of the trip! I wonder why Tiana signs with her royal title and not Naveen, especially since he always introduced himself as “Prince Naveen of Maldonia”.

After meeting Tiana and Naveen, I took the bridge from Liberty Square to Ariel and Eric’s location at the Veranda just off the entrance to Adventureland. I wasn’t sure if their line would still be open, but fortunately I was able to get in just a few minutes before it was closed. Amusingly enough, who should be a few groups ahead of me but the family I met in line for Tiana and Naveen! I believe I had mentioned to them that Ariel and Eric would be out there, so they must have had the same idea I did to see them right afterwards.

arieleric1-6003.jpg

I ended up waiting around 15 minutes, which for Ariel and Eric is not bad at all! It was great to see Eric out since he has been pretty rare in the past. Between him and Naveen, it’s good to see some Princes getting out regularly in the parks. Plus, I really liked that Ariel is out somewhere other than the Princess meals in her human form. I think she has one of the coolest gowns of any of the Princesses.

arieleric2-60028.jpg

As nice as it was to get to see them, I’m not exceedingly pleased with the way the pictures turned out. At their location, there was so much light coming from behind them that they were ridiculously backlit, casuing the background to be bright and washed out. To top it off, Ariel and Eric didn’t have much light shining on down on them, so they came out fairly dark- even with flash. Thankfully, I was able to do some work on Photoshop to make these photos look like they do here, but I hope in the future they add a little more light and maybe put a backdrop behind them to block out the backlighting.

arieleric3-60013.jpg

Since he’s so unusual to see, I asked if I could get a photo of Eric by himself. I think Ariel approved this picture, saying that it reminded her of his statue.

I was afraid that waiting for the two royal couples would take up a large chunk of the morning, but I was thrilled that I was able to meet both couples and the Tremaines in less than an hour! However, there was still one more Disney pair that I really wanted to see before meeting back up with Buzz, so I headed off to Fantasyland in search of Mary Poppins and Bert. When arrived, they were standing near the Carousel, so I hoped into their fairly-short line.

peterwendywalking-6003.jpg

From the line, I noticed Peter Pan and Wendy Darling over by Mickey’s Philharmagic. I thought that perhaps my luck would hold out and that I might be able to meet them as well after seeing Mary and Bert, but they left to go backstage before I got a chance to see them. I thought that maybe I’d try to see them again later in the day.

marybert1-6004.jpg

Meeting Mary Poppins and Bert proved to be another great character experience. I even got a handshake from Bert. When I asked him if that means I’ll get luck now since, according to Chim-Chim-Cheree “Good luck will rub off when I shakes hands with you”, Mary Poppins seemed a little confused. I guess since she wasn’t in that scene of the movie, she wasn’t aware. Bert knew just what I was talking about and said that I must have some experience of being a sweep. This lead to a conversation about how I dressed up as Bert for Halloween last year.

marybert2-6009.jpg

Before leaving, Mary made sure to wish me a “Jolly Holiday”.

princecharmingregalcarousel-600.jpg

After leaving Mary and Bert, I checked out the nearby new sign for the Carousel. I’m not sure quite what to make of the new name. On one hand, it’s nice to see something named after one of the Princes since they get next to nothing in the parks. On the other hand though, “Cinderella’s Golden Carousel” is the name I grew up with and just seems to classic to me (not to mention it rolls of the tongue easier). I was also disappointed that Jaq and Gus no longer stand on the sign like they did before. I guess it will just take time to get use to “Prince Charming Regal Carousel”.

I wanted to catch up with my brother Buzz, so I gave him a call. Not getting an answer, I figured that he must have been on a ride or something and decided to look around some of the shops in Fantasyland until he got off and called me back.

castlecouture-6002.jpg

I went in the Castle Couture shop to see if they’ve added any other decorations since they expanded into the former Tinker Bell Treasures shop. Other than Aurora’s color-changing gown on display from before, I didn’t see anything particularly eye-catching.

sirmickeys1-600.jpg

One of my favorite shops in the Magic Kingdom- Sir Mickey’s. The beanstalk climbing up to the sky is a great touch.

sirmickeys2-600.jpg

Donald gets ready to fight the giant in one of the window displays outside the store. Somehow, I have the feeling that he’ll be really angry when he finds out that Mickey defeated the giant.

Next chapter: A look at the Fantasyland expansion and a trip to Toontown
