We currently have reservations at a disney resort during a moonlight magic and we were lucky enough to get tickets for our family! If we decide to cancel the resort hotel and stay with family in Orlando for the night will the moonlight magic tickets be cancelled? Are they somehow linked to the resort reservation?

Also, Will everyone in the party who we signed up for the moonlight magic need a magic band to get into the event or do we just all get wristbands? Two of the people in our party will not have magic bands and I wasn't sure if they needed to purchase them beforehand (we declined them with the resort reservation).

From the event details page:
If you cancel your Resort reservation, your event registration will be cancelled automatically.

MM events don't use MagicBands for entry. They issue event specific wristbands like those used for MNSSHP & MVMCP.

You will lose your MM reservation. The reason is that you booked MM during the priority window for those who are staying onsite. If you could cancel and keep the reservation, then many people could book a dummy reservation, get the MM tickets during that priority window, then cancel the reservation to get their points back and stay elsewhere. It's similar to people who book a WDW hotel room, book FP's during the onsite stay window, and then they cancel the room but keep the FP's. They eliminated this practice as well. I'm not saying you're doing anything nefarious, but that is Disney's reasoning behind it.

Thank you! Def not what we are looking to do, we will go stay with family the next day!! Thank you so much!

I canceled our reservation and stayed offsite and did not loose our access to the MM event on 8/22. I booked it when the window opened for those who had reservations opened. And we did not loose the FB I booked for 7:10 Navi River

Would you be checking out the day of the event? I was told that if you were checking out the day of the event that I would still be able to call and make the reservation for MM. You could always call member services and ask them. I believe most of us play by the rules, but it only take a few to ruin it for all.

I had tickets the Hollywood studios event in 2018 and got the tickets during the second offering where you didn’t need a reservation.
When my waitlist came through and my reservation changed they also cancelled my moonlight magic tickets because the system
Recognized a cancellation.
I called member services and they saw that i didn’t cancel but my resort just changed and they were able to restore my tickets.

I’m not sure if there is a new system now and if this would still be the case.
