Monty Dog makes some new friends!

Monty Dog is a very good ambassador for Dog-kind.

You would not know it by this picture, but Chris' 5 year old neices were terrified to even be in the same yard as Monty an hour before this picture was taken.

When we first arrived at the labor day cookout, they refused to come off the porch into the area of the yard when Monty was. But, we spent some time with them, had them pet his back first and answered their questions about dogs.

By the end of the night, they were hugging him, kissing him, giving him treats, trying to teach him to do tricks and actually putting their hands out for him to kiss.

I'd say Monty definately made some new friends, and made a very good impression to these children that not all dogs are scary and mean. Their mothers were both amazed. I mean literally amazed at how much they turned around from the start of the night!

AWWW, very cute! That's funny, my 5 year old dd was afraid of my sister's tibetan terrier yesterday when we first got there...she wouldn't go outside where he was, and the same thing...later on in the day they were best buds! Pretty area, BTW! Where is the lake?

Tibetan terriers are so cute!

The lake is in Laconia, NH. It's gorgeous, but it was kind of cold out yesterday so we could not go swimming. We did get to go out on a boat though.

Those 2 girls aren't sisters? I thought they were twins until I read that both mothers were amazed!

Aren't they precious? Nope. They aren't twins or even sisters. They are cousins. Their moms are sisters though, who look very much alike.

Good job, Monty! I wish I could say the same of our chocolate lab, Jenny...she is just sooo hyper that my DDs friends who are afraid of dogs usually leave terrified. Hoping to change that, though, with some training and with the help of our newest family member, a beagle named Lily. She isn't intimidating in the least...until she puts those needle-like puppy teeth in your fingers! lol

Have you ever thought of taking him to nursing homes to visit? We had a Sheltie once that was certified as a therapy dog. I think we only got to make one visit before we got sidetracked with our real kids. I think the organization we worked with was PAWS.

Monty seems like he would be great at that type of thing.

We'd love to do something like that with him. I think he'd be great at it. He is really good at calming down and just letting people pet him.

You could contact a nursing home and talk to the activities coordinator. Sometimes nursing homes have certain rules or days that you can bring your animals in.

I think I will start calling around. I'm serious, whenever we go places, kids who are scared of dogs, usually wind up amazing their parents by hugging and kissing Monty. Elderly people and people in wheelchairs who don't get out that much have told me that Monty makes them so happy and makes them want to come out more. I've also told a few people about how he overcame a serious illness when he was little and they've said it makes them hopeful. I really think he'd be a great therapy animal.

The group we worked with was just a local organization, but I did find this for Therapy dogs international. You can find many more by doing a google search on "therapy dogs."

When Candy was certified she had to have a clean bill of health, pass a basic obedience test, and demonstrate the ability to remain calm while strangers handled her.

It was fun, but I became pregnant about the time we started and our focus kind of shifted. Maybe I need to look into that again when the kids are gone to college.

Lol! He's still young enough to not mind having birthdays...

His birthday was April 19 2003. He is almost 1 and a half.
