Try Hotpads and even rentcollegepads and can even find people who rent in FB based on campus locations. I would imagine many people are looking to sublease their college places though the summer so right now you might get a great deal until September at least. If you are looking until January you might be able to find a landlord in a college town willing to allow a sublease and rent to someone who either dislikes their roommates or is coming in midyear, happens a lot. Suggestion, take photos for the sublease advertisements BEFORE you move all your stuff into the room
I'm sad you suffered such a tragedy. Lots of people spin out wildly when things like this happen so it is very much to your credit that you are going very slowly and making well thought out conscientious decisions.
Do you have any idea why they want you back at that time? Do they miss you? Are they worried about you? There can be PTSD over a place so if you feel a deep aversion to where you come from maybe talk about that with a therapist or grief counselor, there are places I simply can't be and times has not faded those triggers at all so it is a real thing if you feel it.
