Month of September - WISH Team Walkers and Runners

Hi Wishers! I'm excited and nervous about the Philly Distance Run this weekend! I don't plan on running too fast. Hopefully faster than my last half marathon, but we'll see. I plan on having my phone with me, so you can follow me on twitter if you like! My Twitter ID: mla1977. (yeah, I know, I'm sooo creative). Follow me there!

Vicky I saw that the Higgdon plan had 12 miles for the week before my half marathon. Thankfully I was following the MfM plan. I did 7 miles this past Sunday (it was timed perfectly with my marathon training).

Frank I hope to see you on Sunday!

I hope everyone at the PDR sticks around to cheer me on at the finish!

Maura: Oh, I don't know that we're all that different. Unless you count my OCD. :rotfl2: Congratulations to your DD on the runner of the week award--very impressive. And yes, congrats to you on the last couple of days at work. Exciting new horizons for you!

Carrie: Yay for you and your midweek run. You know they're important, so I'm happy that you're getting them in post-tris. P.S. Legs "craving" a run? Love it! :lmao:

Vicky: No clue about the tapering. I know some 1/2 programs call for it. I think tapering probably depends on your racing season, pace goals, and what you're using the 1/2 for (i.e. training for a marathon). Since you've been feeling strong with your runs and have got a busy season planned, I don't think you needed the taper, although Carrie's advice seems spot on in terms of effort. Not that my $.02 is worth anything since I'm not one to have a "race-day pace," just the regular tortoise pace. :rotfl2:

Frank: I didn't know that about the "your pace or mine" shirts. You could pull of women's wear, I'm sure. :rotfl2: I understand entirely what you mean by the "only" 50K. Like I said, it's a mental trick to avoid the psych-out stress of the event; he was a little tired after his 28-miler this weekend. (And I was in awe.) Speaking of being in awe, wow! Your fall schedule is filled with activity, including and beyond running! Good luck with Philly--I hope you and Megan meet up.

Megan: Good luck with the Philly Distance Run! I'm sure you'll have a great time (event-wise and pace-wise). You've really been getting in your training, despite everything going on personally!

As for me: Yep, the bourbon phrase is mine. That's mine, a riff on their ubiquitous "Will Run for Beer/Chocolate" shirts. I seriously considered a "Will Run for Ice Cream" shirt, but thought it was too imitative. I've got a ton of ideas--another midlife crisis one, one based on mirages, etc. The one I'd like most to submit, but don't know about copyright restrictions, is "Miles to Go Before I Sleep." ("Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," Robert Frost) My favorite of the ones submitted is probably the "It's the .2 that really gets me."

In other news, I was talking with DOOD about the possibilities for the new fall racing event while we waited in line to see a preview of Zombieland (a film I highly recommend if you like zombie films or comedies that riff on horror conventions). I've decided it might be a good Halloween-themed run that invites costumed runners. It could then attract the MNSSHP families, keeping them out of the park for chunks of the day and encouraging them to buy the tix. It would them well with MK and DHS, the HM and TOT respectively. And costumed runners as Disney? What fun!

Oh, yeah. Training. XT today. Pilates, weights, something that sort of resembles push-ups.....

I haven't posted in a while. I am running my first race in almost 2 years 9/26. It is the Brixx 10K in Charlotte. This will also be the first time I have had a chance to wear my WISH Team singlet. I am very nervous. Have been running lots of miles over the summer to get ready for the Charlotte Marathon and this race should give me a good idea if I have a chance to qualify for the Boston Marathon or not.

Good luck everyone who is racing this weekend.

David

Hi All. I am a newbie here and just wanted to jump in feet first. I did my first half at DL a couple weeks ago. I am still a walker - with hopes and dreams of being able to add running someday. I live in Utah, and don't have the vacation time it would take to travel to the races at WDW, so I will have to stick with DL.

Thanks for all your great inspiration on this board. I haven't even scratched the surface of reading it all yet, but I am already inspired and I know I will find good support here.

Manda

:welcome::jumping1:

Welcome Manda! We are a fun bunch here! Everyone always has great advice and they are very supportive. Have fun!

David - GOod to see you! Good luck!!!

Manda - Welcome!!!! You may want ot read through the Welcome thread. From tehre, you can fomd teh thread to ask to be on a team. If you have questions, though, it's pretty easy just to ask here first.

Maura - Happy last day of work!!!!

Debra - Love teh slogan ideas!

Happy LRs to everyone! (Even if they are SLRs they are still LRs and at one point, they seemed like huge mileage to us)

Hi all! Sitting here with a cold one after my final day of work. I guess time will tell if I have made the right choice, but for now it's time to get crackin' on all those things that one never seems to get around to doing. I will need a plan--of course. Always work better when I have a plan and a deadline....maybe that's why race training works for me!

Hope everyone enjoys the weekend. And may the Lions lose by not more than 2 touchdowns!

Maura

Ahh Debra! Thanks for the sweet words. This week however will be low on miles. I am healing and have a slight fever Thurs/Fri. I am hoping its just sinuses/allergies :confused3 But unfortunately it was enough to keep me from getting my flu shot today, so back again next week.

Monday I did the core working out and while I was waiting on a machine to clear I went and used the hamstring curl and got a bit tight by mid-Tuesday. Nothing horrible. Went to the gym and did my 3 mile jog on the TM, wasn't really bothered by the hamstring....until Wednesday. :scared1: It had to be a tad swollen. :rolleyes1 But by taking Wed night off from the gym. Came down with the BLAH feeling Thurs and today and seem to be doing much better in the leg area and as long as i feel good will give a long day a try on Sunday.

Thanks Frank I'll check out the plug in. I tend to be lazy when it comes to updating. Good luck in Philly!!!

Manda! Welcome!!! :)

Carrie... nope didn't know that was there, actually typing this I still don't see it. I wonder if it's that smiley waving at me and pointing at a button? j/k but still can't find it. oh well I'll check out Frank's suggestion. But even that will have to wait because I feel like nodding off again. This fever/sinus/cold thing had better be gone by Sat, I have training plans and a English diction plug-in to find!

David good luck on the Brixx 10k!!!

Debra!!! Will be thinking of your DOOD as he 'ONLY' does 50K  :cheer2:DOOD:cheer2: Have fun cheering and supporting!!!

Megan... Good luck on Philly!!!!! :cheer2:

Debra... pass the ice cream! You all get in tons of great miles, I'll take care of Ben & Jerry, it's a tough job but I'll take one for the team ;) I think there is something about freezing out a fever  oh no worries, it's not THAT huge of a fever just annoying enough to push off the shot. But I'll still take the ice cream :upsidedow

This is my first post here (not on the Dis) and I wanted to introduce myself. I am Patty, my dh is Dale (dstevens) and our dd is Aubre. We will be doing our first Disney race in January. We are all registered for the 1/2 and are signed up to volunteer for the water stop. We are already friends with some 'Wishers' and hope to get to know some of you all so we can meet up with you in January.

As for training, I am doing the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in Philadelphia is less than a month, so my training is strictly walking. Tomorrow is 18 miles and Sunday is 15. After the 3-Day, I'll start back in with my training for the 1/2. Hubby is injured right now and worrying about the race already. Hoping that he's soon be back to normal. DD, well she doesn't need to 'train' much. She's a runner and doing a Ragnar Relay (193 miles) next weekend, but she too is injured right now.

So excited to get my first Disney medal! (hopefully)

I will try to get hubby over here so he can do his own intro (he's much more amusing than I am).

Welcome Patricia. Is the half in January going to be your first race of any distance or just your first Disney race? I ask because if it will be your first race period I would recommend finding a local 5K to participate in. The cancer walk is great, but it isn't a race. There are some unique aspects to a race that are easier to experience the first time on a small scale instead of the scale that is marathon weekend at WDW. Just a suggestion, take it for what it's worth. Of course if you have done other races ignore all of my drivel.

AAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHH matey! I jus be checkin in to say "Look what a cannibal took off me in exchange for me own life" (ED note: No, not running shoes)

And don't forget, matey...."When you're a professional pirate, you're always in the best of company"

Maura
(In celebration of "Talk like a pirate day" and of course, one of the best movies of all time, Muppet Treasure Island)

An now to resume our regularly scheduled WISH program........

Welcome Patricia. Is the half in January going to be your first race of any distance or just your first Disney race?

Frank, Fortunately, Disney is not my first endurance. I've done many 5K's over the past year and then my first 10 miler and 1/2 marathon this past spring. This will be hubby's first distance, he's done some 5k's and really wanted to do a 10k next month, but has been in so much pain, not sure if that is still on target.

Welcome Patty and family!!!!!

Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to getting to know you all.

AFM: Things are coming along nicely. Finally got my Timex Ironman watch so I can try doing some "Galloway" work. As most of you know I am a racewalker, but trying to get my finishing times faster and so I tried a jog one minute racewalk 12 for my 4 miler today and it seemed to work just fine. I tried to add jogging a few months ago but ramped it up to soon and ended up with bad shin splints in my right leg, so this time trying to take it slower.
Will see how my 8 miler goes tomorrow.

Good afternoon folks. Since my wife (pjstevens) has intoduced us to these wish boards i might as well jump in. I am not a seasoned runner. In fact until last January i hadn't done any running in about 20 years. After attending a friends vow renewal in WDW last January i was a little intimidated by the number of you runners in attendance. Plus the fact that my wife was now doing something i had not done. Heck i have a drivers and motorcycle license. Why do i need to run? For the fun and excitement. And i dropped some nice weight real quick. I have participated in several 5K's and was anticipating more until i hurt my SI joint (right side of my back) in June. I was cured (?) by a PT end of July but then developed intense pain in my quad muscle on the same side of my body several weeks later. So now i have once again put off my training and go back to the PT Monday for further evaluation. I need to get healed so i can continue my training for my first 1/2 marathon (at WDW) in January. Well, thats enough about me. Now i will try to catch up on all the prior posts that i have missed.

:welcome: Dale and Patricia!! :yay:

I'm re re committing! I'm blogging on a pre trip report! DH has me on a nice paced 16 week training schedule - I've completed 2 weeks! Well, after I do a 4 miler tomorrow! :thumbsup2 I hope to get a couple dis'ers from my ptr to post over here! :thumbsup2 (and order a hat! )

Tracy sent you an email - thanks for your dedication, and reposting! Its been a money thing - just got back to work!

Hi everyone! I settled on doing an 8 miler today instead of 12. I wanted some distance but still wanted to be fresh for my race next weekend. It ended up being a pace run and I didn't even realize it until I got home. I guess the cooler weather makes a difference :) Tomorrow was suppose to have been a 3 mile pace run but I guess I can go easy. It's just as well since we had a really big family dinner tonight. The extra weight I'm sure will slow me down

Patricia/Dale - :welcome:

Diane - Hope you feel better soon pixiedust:

Debra - Love the idea of a Halloween themed run! Lots of possibilities for a very cool looking medal! Not sure if I could run in a costume though...

Maura - I've been doing the pirate talk thing tonight at dinner and driving everyone nuts. I don't think anyone here knew about Talk Like a Pirate Day :upsidedow

Tracy - Good luck with your 8 miler!

David - Good luck on your 10K next weekend!

Have a great night everyone!

Hi Patty! :yay: Hi Dale! Soo happy to see you guys here! :woohoo:

Thanks for all the kind welcomes! Got some major blisters today (after walking 33 miles this weekend). I never got blisters when I ran, so hoping once I get back into running that I'll not have to deal with these any longer.

Thanks Vicky! I'm feeling much improved today! I was a slacker all weekend but I did only eat 1 Klondike bar so the ice cream was safe :thumbsup2 I have my gym bag packed and in the car.

Maura? Was it really Talk Like a Pirate Day or was that just you dealing with the 1st day of bliss? Hope you had a lovely time at the gym today!!! :woohoo:

Hi Pat and Dale!!! Hope the injury recovery is ASAP and Ouch! on the blisters! But Woohooo :woohoo: on the 33 miles this weekend!!!

Tracy? Oh One-of-my-Wonderful-Corral-Partners! I think I'll let you get ahead (like that's hard to do!) Even at the risk of eating dust AND smoke as you add in jogging. So don't worry if I take a few steps back and maybe to the side at the start :lmao:
