Month of October WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Thought of you guys this morning. Was out for a run with the group, and squirrels kept crossing the trail. We headed across a bridge, and there was one on the bridge directly in front of us. I was curious to see what he was going to do, but he jumped onto the tree hanging over the bridge to get out of our way. We usually call out whatever hazards are in front of us, and there were several "squirrel" calls today. :rotfl:

My Indian running name is Dances with Squirrels. Inevitably, they're in the sidewalk, then freak out when they see me coming, run back and forth in the middle of the sidewalk trying to get away, while I try not to step on them or fall. I'm sure it looks like this:

Ronda LOL over the Godzilla posing squirrel. RE: The race that sucks how it turned out for you :( I hope the leg feels better (now!) tomorrow.

Jacke ... :lmao: We have small bridge in the park near my house and the squirrel run all over it. They will jump up on the handrails and since it has a frame across the top they will also run along that. They were making a ruckus last night in the leaves :)

Tandy Welcome back!!! Congrats on the 14 miler!

Mel ... I can just 'see' you trying to run and dodge a zig-zaging squirrel. Dances with Squirrels? Cute!

Maura .... CONGRATS!!!!!! WTG!!!! :woohoo: :cheer2: :woohoo: :cheer2:

Last night I left the dog to home and walked the hubby. 10 miles. He set the pace. Today was a cooking day. Oh and I missed my 1st gym day last week in a long time. At 4 pm on Wednesday I slammed my finger (middle non the less!) enough to cause bleeding. I decided that it probably was best not to tempt fate and do weights. Instead I visited Target LOL Thursday did a nice walk around the neighborhood with the DH. Probably did 2 miles. Didn't even take the Garmin :) Tomorrow the gym and the bag is already waiting at the door :)

Have a great week everyone!!!!

I dragged myself to the gym last night. Literally dragged. :) I didn't want to go. But I wanted to see if the lady who does the TM with me did ok in the Free Press Half Marathon. She did.. She finished her 1st in 3 1/2 hrs. She was glowing and apparently is now addicted LOL Now she wants the full.

On a night I didn't want to go to the gym it was the best time. Getting all the Half Marathon news from the one lady. Hearing another got some awesome news she'd been waiting on. And then running into a lady from my weekend class. Totally a social night :thumbsup2

In addition I did make my body workout. 30 min on the TM doing some walking/running. Upper body circuit. 30 min on the elliptical. Getting thru the 1st 15 min on the elliptical is the hardest. It helped that the upbeat Zumba class was going on. They kept me distracted, they have so much fun :)

Happy Tuesday!!!

Diane Glad your gym outing turned out to be good.

Tandy Congrats on your 14 miler! Doesn't it feel great when you hit these higher distances--ones that you may have thought you could never do? You should feel very proud. And good luck on the 18. I find that when I go out to run a specific distance , it pays to just keep my mind on doing that distance---don't look back (at your shorter runs) and don't look ahead (to a longer run) and don''t make any comparisons. You will make it through!

Ronda Sorry about your race injury. You can never, ever tell what will happen on race day. Even if everything has gone well, sometimes the stars just don't align. It's happened to all of us. Please don't get discouraged. Just rest up, and remember there will be another race!

I went to the gym today---first session post-race. Spent 1/2 hour in the pool doing random things (Kick sets were NOT a great idea!), 10 minutes in hot tub, and then yoga--which felt good, and surprisingly even Warrior2!

Time to walk the dog---I am still not ready for this!

Maura Very cool Boston logo!

AFM...just running around. Not really training for anything. I have the Princess Half, but not training for it yet. Wanted to do a 15K this past Saturday, but had to do something else so I ran a 15K by myself on Friday, not bad 1:24.

Mel I qualified Sunday, signed up Monday! (Good thing, too, since it sold out)

Today I plan to run 3 miles or less--whatever feels good. First run since race. We'll see how it goes. Last marathon, I gave up running for a month to heal various injuries, so I feel like I'm ahead of the game.

Maura

Hello all,

It's been a few weeks since I checked in but my training is coming along nicely. If finished the C25K a couple of weeks ago and jumped in to the Maraton for Mortals Run/Walk program. I'll be doing a 5 mile (gulp...) long run this weekend. My times are getting a bit better though I am still pretty slow by any standard. I'm doing about a 12.5 min/mile pace on my mid week runs and slower on the long runs. Slow ad steady may not win the race but it should at least get me to the finish line in one piece. :thumbsup2

I have skipped a couple of runs and the leg is feeling much better. Still felt it mowing downhill last night, but stairs are no problem. I plan to bike to work tomorrow and run on Saturday.

Prior to the race my runs the last few months had been five miles on Tuesday, four miles on Thursday and anywhere between 6 and 14 on Saturday. If you have any advice on what to do this Saturday, please give it.

Maura - +1 on the logo and you are charmed. come stand next to me!

Ronda

Ronda My (stupid) advice....runif it feels good, don't if it doesn't. And if you do run, I wouldn't do more than 3-5 anyway. You have just done a race, and your body needs time to recover. So just take it easy. Run without a watch. Hope it goes well.

I decided not to run yesterday--no particular reason, but I figured I'd give the legs another few days. Biked (briefly), did a few minutes of upper body weights and then yoga. Yoga today and over the weekend. Then back to running next week.

I need to work on my race calendar for next year. With my training plan, I have a few openings on my shcedule where I could do a 1/2 marathon. The Tobacco Road one works for March. What I really need is something for February 13. Based on the calendars I've seen out there, it looks like there will be RnR New Orleans, Mercedes in Alabama, one on JAX, and one put on by my local running store "Dances with Dirt"--the 1/2 is the "baby" race since the rest goe up to 50M! Anyone care to weigh in with suggestions?

Maura: Thanks for the link. I used the calculator and find his info very interesting. We all know this info, but to have an exact number of calories needed is pretty cool!
Congrats on Boston, by the way. I can't believe the drama.

Ronda: Glad to hear the leg is better. I have no advice though. :lmao:

Lolakat: Absolutely correct about slow and steady. Finishing is so much more important than getting super fast and either burning yourself out or hurting yourself. I've been running for decades, which is the only reason I focus on speed.

Joan: Great pace for that 15k. It's just good to get them in when you can. I always get upset when I have to get off my schedule, but it's about the miles, right? :thumbsup2

Diane: How's the finger? Have you thought about joining one of those zumba classes? It's the best workout and I love it. Burns lots of calories and works everything. :thumbsup2

I am getting ready to run 4 today and then, I'm going to get fitted for some new shoes. I'm having all kinds of leg and foot problems, so I'm pretty sure it's the shoes. My calves ache, inside of the ankles are tight. Then, my feet are blistering on the inside and I seem to be landing on the outside. I have about 6 different pairs of running shoes, all different. None of them are good, but some are just really painful. I haven't wanted to shell out the big bucks, but it's inevitable. I usually pay around $80 per pair, but the man who works at the running store said theirs are at least $100, although there is the occasional pair on sale for less. I, of course, will have some sort of special problem that requires the really expensive pairs.

My TM got fixed this week, so I'm happy about that. Just in time for winter! :cool1:

Tandy Once you find a pair of shoes that you like, you can usually find them online at a discount. I have ordered at Running Warehouse with the WISHD code to get 15% off (they do exclude some brands). And oddly enough, my latest shoes, which are Nike Vomero5 (love the roomy toe box!) were ones I got at Nordstrom for 1/3 off on sale. Of course, it will be painful to replae them at $130!

Thanks Maura. The bike ride felt great this morning. The nearly-full moon was sliding behind incoming clouds as I started. I need to start paying more attention to the temperature when I suit up. Not too cold except for my thumbs. I noticed that running last year, too. My thumbs are always coldest. Anyone else?

Looking forward to running tomorrow. I'll run if it feels good. Great advice!

Ronda

Maura I did not know about the code for Running warehouse and I buy lots of shoes there. for me and my two daughters. I like the speedy shipping and return if need be. Thanks for the info.:thumbsup2

Maura, thanks so much for that info. I always forget to go look at that thread. I got fitted in the store, and they didn't have the color of the shoe I wanted. So, they ordered them from another store. But, I just went online, and, with the code, got 2 pair in the color I wanted, for $25 cheaper each, so $50 total! I am psyched! I'm probably just going to buy the ones from the store too, so I'll have 3 wonderful pairs of shoes. If their figures were right at the store, and I'm running 40 mile weeks, that'll last me for 9 months (3 months per pair)!

Got that 18 miler in today. Lots of issues to work through, but it's done! :thumbsup2

Love the WISHD code at runningwarehouse. The shipping deal makes it work. I've tried roadrunnersports and any return shipping kills the savings.

Ran 3 miles this morning. Average pace 11:43. Considered doing more, but this was just a check run from the beginning. Leg felt okay. A little pully pain feeling in the right leg, but it didn't get worse.

I'm still not sure what happened last Saturday. It wasn't the distance or speed. The only difference was surface. I usually run on a mix of sidewalks, gravel trails and city park spongy track stuff. This was all pavement, but that shouldn't be worse, should it? Doing a run/walk, I tend to stay on the edges. Could the gutter slope make that much difference?

The muscle that hurts is not one of muscles on the front of the thigh. It's the Vastus Medialis on the inside. Most mentions of this muscle are in relation to kneed problems and bad kneecap tracking due to weakness in this muscle. I've not found much about how the muscle gets injured. Just how to strenghthen it to correct knee trouble.

Anyway, today was good. Next run is Tuesday. Next week is a LR of 6. Then November 6, is 17 miles. Cue Doris Day...

Yes! Come do Tobacco Road! I ran the half last year and loved it. Will probably volunteer for this year's race.

Jackie

First run back post-race and it went pretty well. It's so windy here today that I just bagged doing an outside run and went to the gym. Did an easy 5---okay, it was a moderate 5 (something about slowing down that makes me feel like I'll lose whatever speed I have), and of course topped it off with chocolate milk.

Totally unrelated, I found that while training, whenever I had to run up a hill, I concentrated on using those big old backside muscles (glutes). This caused me to immediately start thinking of "Baby got back". Fortunately I kept my sining at a low level so anyone who passed wouldn't think I was nuts.

Anyone else have any strange songs pop into their head related to their running?

Maura
