Month of July - WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Kat - Welcome. I equate the spinning bike to the treadmill, I hate them both but deal when I have to. I would say get a bike and get outside. Swimming laps, while boring, is the best crosstraining in my opinion. It is low impact, uses a lot of different muscle groups, and is good cardio. Doing some weight training is also an option..

Thanks for the suggestions!!

It's just too hot out here for anything outside... maybe in the fall.

I was considering H20 Aerobics, but not too sure. Swimming laps is roughly like watching paint dry, unfortunately.

Does Pilates/Yoga count as cross training?

I plotted the Galloway "to finish" plan earlier this year. At 32 weeks long it starts the first week of JULY! My current mileage is closer to week six or seven, but I'll take the checkmarks just the same.

Nope. No rain. I was so wet I wouldn't have minded.

Kat - you are really gaining speed! Speaking of rock your race - Chicago will be so fun!

Ronda

Thanks!!

Are you doing the run/walk plan too, or just the Galloway mileage?

I'm doing a mix. The race will be run/walk. Either 5/1 or 3/1. My long runs are currently 5/1. My hilly run is 3/1 and the flat (4 miles) is run/run. I'm using the Galloway mileage - mostly. I posted a month or so ago and wanting to work in the local half. Charles made some suggestions. I changed a few weeks and top out at 23.

I'd put Pilates in the cross training category. Anything that hard has to get credit!

Ronda

Cool! The local Galloway group has the WDW full folks doing 26, but not until Dec 4th. They have halfers going to 14 though.

You know, every time they say "grow taller" in Pilates I think of you and your comments about that!! It always makes me want to say, but I don't *want* to grow taller...

I wonder if it actually does make you appear taller at all, though? :confused3

Kat, you bet Pilates/Yoga counts as good XT. You need that to go along with the distance. Great choice!

Hi all.....

July is going quickly, training is hot, and it looks like Alberto Contador will win the Touur de France. So which of the above things is a good thing? (The correct answer is: None!)

Kudos to all who are training in the heat. I keep telling myself that if I can run in the heat--even slowly--then I will be able to run better in the cool. My marathon training plan has me running my LR at specific pace--which I am terrible at, even with my new Garmin! And there are 5 :scared1: 20-mile runs. We'll see how it goes.

If anyone has any good "how to beat blisters on the side of the ball of your foot (side of base of big toe)", I'd like to hear. Body glide, socks, new shoes haven't donet he trick. Next up--tape.

Maura

Maura Bandaid brand makes a product for blisters...I have used it in the past, not recently and I thought it was very good. Sort of like a band-aid, but specifically for blisters.

Weather is hot and humid and I'm training mostly outside for the DL half. Long runs I get up at 5 have half a banana and some juice, stretch and out by 5:45am. I'm doing some of my "speed" work on the TM.

Wow! this month is going so fast.

This month is definitely going fast!

Tiger thanks for the Pilates/Yoga info. I have to admit I have been skipping it some lately, as something had to give in my workout schedule over the last week or two (work trying to kill me).

I concur completely on the brutal weather. I did 14 miles last Saturday and it was just plain awful. I wish my running group would push the start time back from 6:30 to 6.

Taper now, though, and the Chicago RnR half is a week from Sunday!

ABSOLUTELY! Sat there holding my breath last night watching the morning coverage hoping that at least Lance would win the stage, so I'd have something to be happy about, but alas... :sad2: On a fun note, one of my Galloway leaders is in France. Sunday he actually got to run alongside Lance on the climb up Port du Pailheres. We saw him on tv!

Joan - Good for you for starting so early. This has to be the most miserable summer on record!

Kat - Hate that I missed that 14 miler - NOT! I can't even imagine what this Saturday's run will be like. :woohoo: for taper. Good luck in Chicago, if I don't see you before then.

Still injured. See the chiro again tomorrow for a reevaluation, and then he's going to send me on to an ortho. What we're doing isn't working, and I'm beginning to panic. I have 3 months until Marine Corps, and should have been with Kat on that 14 miler last Saturday. I have to admit I'm not missing running in this heat, but I do miss running!

Jackie

Starting at 6:00 doesn't help Kat. It was 80 at 6:00 a.m. yesterday. Just plain awful. More of the same tomorrow. I need to remember the heat is real. I feel miserable and slow and think I'm having a bad run. It's the heat dummy.

I thought about your 14 miler last weekend. Ha, ha, 14 miler. Say it a few times. You ran a 14 miler and it wasn't even for a medal. Amazing aren't you!?

Kat - How's your taper going?

Yeah, I know. Crazy, aren't I? :upsidedow

You are right about the 6 vs 6:30. The temp wasn't that different and the humidity here is actually worse, the earlier it is.

Taper... I did my last tempo short run yesterday. Tomorrow is an easy either 2 or 3 miler, I will do the 10 with the group on Sat but maybe with the slower pace group and in 1/1s, and then next week I am going to do an easy short run on Tues and nothing else until race day.

I am not sure about Sat though... should I do 10, or should I go shorter? We train slow.

Jackie, sorry to hear about the injury. Hope that they find the solution soon!

Just wanted to stop in and give a big :worship: :worship: :worship: to everyone who has been running in the heat! I was in the Toronto area during the crazy heat wave a couple weeks ago, and I couldn't do anything but sit in a lake for a week! I can't even imagine what it would be like training/racing in that kind of weather! :scared1:

That's basically it - my activity is now down to walking laps around the dog park with my Shepherds, while periodically throwing a tennis ball. I just wanted to let you guys know how impressed I am with y'all! :woohoo:

Sarah Given the choice of running in hot weather or being pregnant in hot weather, I'd pick the run! So hope you're hanging in there. I remember 21 years ago w/ no AC and being pregnant with DD. At least now, when I get hot flashes, I have central air!

Maura

Just popping in after my 20 mile LR--which actually turned out to be 20.35 according to Garmin. I noticed at a few spots on my route that the AutoPause feature kicked in while I was still running. Two-fold bummer! 'Cause first--I wasn't running THAT slowly! and second--that distance wasn't showing on my display.

Anyway, it's done (last 5 miles were tough and slow) and I am drinking my chocolate milk in a very Homer-like fashion (mmmmm, chocolate milk....drool)

How I am ever going to pick up the pace for the future LR is beyond me!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend all!

Maura

Jackie Hope you are getting good medical help and feeling better soon. It has turned rather hot and humid so perhaps this is a good time for a rest period? Anyway hope you are back out there soon.

Maura 20 miles!!:worship: Good for you. I may be there one day as DD wants to to a full at WDW 2012.

Sarah Rose Hang in there. At least you getting out and I think throwing the ball can be counted as cross training.

Kat You are everywhere on these boards. Good luck on your upcoming half.

Ronda Just remember the turtle..alway moving forward at a steady pace will get you to your destination.

To everyone else-stay cool and hydrate!:thumbsup2

I got my LR in today-9 miles. DS (17) said he would go with me. I wasn't sure, but he got up at 5:25 and we were out by 5:40. He fell in behind me and never asked how far we had run..with 100 meters left, I let him know it was almost over...9:40 pace--not bad. Of course not to be out done by Mom, he continued to run about another mile and met me at home for some hydration and stretching.

Maura- 20 miles, good job. I haven't even thought about my 20 mile long runs yet.

The last two days have been in the low 70's once the sun set so the runs have been much more pleasant. I have a wedding in NJ this weekend and plan on doing some running along the beach, probably not on the sand though.

I am not sure if anyone is considering the RnR half in VA beach but I have a discount code that is good for $25 off and expires on 7/31. It is ROLLBACK.

Keep up the good work everyone, cooler weather will be here soon.

Haha! Newbie runner this year, so I am trying to soak in as much as possible.

That's awesome that your son did the run with you!

Low 70s... ahh. We barely hit high 70s at 3AM.

Thanks for the VA RnR offer! I am doing the Chicago one this weekend, but will be in WDW for VA.

Maura - Your Garmin should have teh "rest distance' somewher efor when you are paused. you may want to reset teh speed it pauses at. I was runnign up a hill once and heard it auto pause (so depresseing). I have it set, though, so it usuallly will count my turtle pace.

Sarah - I am so impressed tha tyou are still moving!

Kat - Good luck SUnday!!!!!!! Have fun! Are you meeitng up with any of the other WISHers?

3 days to my 70.3. :scared1: Where did the time go?

Carrie - Good luck on Sunday! You continue to amaze me!

Kat - Wouldn't 70's be wonderful? It'd be worth running in the middle of the night if it would actually cool down.

Maura - Can you run some miles for me?

Joan - Nice pace! And yes, this is a wonderful time for a rest period. I told our group director tonight that if I were going to be injured, I picked a really, really good time. Hottest summer on record. UGH!

Frank - One year I'm going to do Va Beach. This is not the year.

I finally got the long-awaited call tonight from the MRI clinic, and missed it. I find out tomorrow when I get to have the MRI to determine what exactly is going on inside my hip. Then we'll decide if, and when, I get to run again this season. And if I have an entry for MCM available. :sad1:
