Month of January 2010 - WISH Team Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Wow!
Wow!
Wow!
You ARE most definitely a fanatic!!! :dance3:

(...and you are just down the road from me as I am right outside of The Woodlands!!)

Nice to see a neighbor here :thumbsup2
We've probably crossed paths before without realizing it! I've been here in The Woodlands a little over 4 years now.

Hi everyone! I don't post much on this thread, but I like to check in every once in awhile.

This will be my first time at Indy. I've heard that it's huge, and I'm expecting to be completely overwhelmed by the crowds.

It is huge, but I didn't feel like I couldn't find my pace after the first mile or so. But, I'm really, really slow so I was with my people after all the speed demons passed us. I can see how it would be frustrating if you were one of the speed demons doing the passing. I'm also not setting a time goal this year. I'm hoping to knock time off my PR at the Illinois half marathon the week before and I just want to finish Indy with a smile on my face.

Hi everyone,
10k in 53 minutes today.

With all the talk about Indy, can I ask what makes the course feel so crowded. I could understand a marathon majors event like Chicago or New York or a destination race like our beloved Disney or Hawaii, (and no offense intended) but what's the big deal about Indy?

Jennifer - Indy is the largest half-marathon in the US and the fifth largest running event in America (quoted from their website http://www.500festival.com/marathon/). There are 35,000 registered. The course includes a lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Maybe not a major, but it's apparently a pretty big deal! Great job on the 10K today!

Jackie

Hi all,

Not much happening with me these days as I am just doing XT in a vain attempt to rid myself of various quad/hip strains. I am approaching the point of forgetting how to run!

For any and all newcomers....welcome, and if you'd like to be put on one of the smaller teams, please see the 2010 Team Roster thread.

Kirstie Hope your chair, races, certificate and everything else get straightened out soon.

Jennifer Good luck on coaching girl's track--and thanks for the commitment. My DD and DS ran XC and track all four years and I know how much work it is for the coaches. Hope you have good support from the team and the parents.

Off to the gym to swim.....

Maura

Hi everyone- just checking in.
I'm glad to see some other new folks here like me!
I put on my old Levi's today (instead of sweatpants with an elastic waist!) to just do laundry & hang around the house and they fit like I had mistakingly put on my husband's pair-I had to check the tag! I stay away from scales but Levi's don't lie, so I'm feeling pretty good about myself!
Hope you all have a good day!

Thanks for letting me scream.

1st problem......Disney saying i'm a man.:sad2: I've had an email saying they will change it. Just waiting for that to happen!!!

2nd Miami. I was told that it had been changed, then today told that it can't be until the expo, as i'm with the team we don't go to the expo!!!!!
I have sent an email to the team manager asking if she wants me to go to sort this out.

3rd my chair. The shop are now not answering there phones. So dh called the company making it and they say that it is still on track, but I don't know if they are still doing the up grades even though I told them ni as they will not tell me, that has to go through the shop!!!!

We went out yesterday and did 60 miles, my SD decided thsat she did not want to ride and hopped out of the trailer and ran!!
She did this sever times and ran about 8 miles, with an average speend of 7.5mph, not bad for her little legs.
At one point my Dh said she was going at 12mph trying to catch me up......I did not know she was running!!!!!!

Does anyone have any idea as to why I can not sleep after a long run???
I only had 4 shot cubes (3 cubes = 1 shot) and a bottle of electrolite drink, why less than I have during a race.
This only happens when I do 60 miles, I am trying to do this 3x a week, but I need to sleep!!!!!

1st problem......Disney saying i'm a man.:sad2: I've had an email saying they will change it. Just waiting for that to happen!!!

If you watch King of the Hill this is funny. At least you aren't dealing with the DMV.

Lori- Your husband is a wise man. He doesn't have a billion lying around to pay off any overextended debt does he? The Glazers are in need of a little help.

Looks like all my bike and swim cross-training has evaporated this week due to work taking up my time. At least I like my job!! I got in my longest mid-week run since...well a long time, probably in over a year last night, and while my legs were still not fully recovered from Goofy, I managed to hold a tempo pace for the whole of the run.

Nice to see a neighbor here :thumbsup2
We've probably crossed paths before without realizing it! I've been here in The Woodlands a little over 4 years now.

Excepting 6 years with Uncle Sam, I've been there since 1973--or well before The Woodlands existed, except maybe on paper. I'll look for you at the local races, always good to have another WISH member nearby!

OK, I'm not going to get back to regular posting on the monthly thread until I actually post here. I have such a hard time getting back into the swing of things after any trips, but marathon especially.

Welcome to all our new WISHers!!!!!

Bookwood - OK, I must admit that I stalked you to figure out you really are Pam. ;) Yay!!! So good to see you! Thanks so much for being one of the angels on the hill durign marathon. You guys were so great to see this year!!!! Look forward to having you as a fellow Warrior too!!!!

Unfortunately I discovered my Tensor Fascia Latae on my lunchtime run today. I felt something around my right hip start to tighten up a little over 2 miles into my 5 mile run. By mile 3 it felt really tight and I walked/ran the last 2 miles back to my office. By the end it was almost all walking. I got in to see my chiropracter mid afternoon and had ultrasound, electric stimulation, accupuncture, and then kinesio tape. I have a 5k on the calendar Saturday morning that will hopefully be a nice easy jog now. I hate to miss a race once I'm registered.

Hi Wishers!

I registered for the Princess! (did I tell you guys that already? Well, I just needed to say it again) I have also convinced another Wisher to sign up and hopefully drag me along to a PR (it doesn't take much, but I missed it by 50 second this month). I've got to really focus on maintaining what I built up in the fall and seeing how much faster I can get in only 4 weeks. Any suggestions?

Hope everyone has a great weekend! I may be out these somewhere in the Philly region getting in 8-10 miles!

Pat - SO sorry about the hip! I have similar issues due to different length legs. Hope things get fixed quickly!

I did 30 min on the DM last night. So proud of myself for going to teh gym solo! That's 2 out of 3 runs I did solo since marathon! Amazing! (For those that don't know me, I am the world's laziest marathon runner. I run with my dh and he usually drags me out. Dragging myself out is huge.)

I also did Core COnversion class this am at 6. :scared1: Yup, I will hurt again tomorrow (and likely Sunday). When I get to the point that I dont' hurt fo 2 days, though, I think I will really benefit form strengthing those muscles! It's not your typical core class either. No crunches, no situps! Works your quads/hammies adn arms too. Very nice. A little more info if you're interested. http://www.grayinstitute.com/productdetail.aspx?p=316&string=EDUCATIONAL%20PRODUCTS

Yucky weather here in MS like most of the country.

Still managed 5.25 miles in 42 minutes.

Hope everyone is safe and dry.

Best,
Jennifer

Pat Sorry about the TFL issue--been there, done that, (Although it seems as if it's not one thing, it's another). Hope all your treatment gets you through your race well.

Megan Any way to throw some speedwork into your routine? My program (FIRST) has them built in, but I'm sure you could find something on RW.

Carrie Good for you with the solo gym runs! I know what you mean about those classes. I did a Muscle Max class yesterday and today I coughed and thought my stomach would explode!

AFM, I was at the gym yesterday and saw this guy on the TM who I have seen before. He runs while holding onto the top of the treadmill! I don't know how or why--and I would never ask. It is definitely interesting to watch, but for some reason it drives me nuts!

Maura

Good MOrning all and welcome to the new Wishers joining in!!!

Syko!!!! I had no idea you were doing ING Miami, how is this or did I not remember??? This will be my 3rd time doing this event, however I will be doing the Half. Look for me as I cross the finish line because I know you will be done with the full by then. Hoping for a 2:45 finish. If I get to the starting line by 6:30 (race starts at 6:15) because I am in K - second to last corral, I am hoping to finish by 9:15ish. I went to the expo yesterday as I like to get there before all the crowds.
Weather is going to be iffy with rain from what I am seeing. Temp that morning around 65 and 30% rain for the entire event. I will try to find you before the start if I can. Go WISH!!

AFM, I have had LOTS of LTO and personal issues. My 15 1/2 year old dog, Mickey, was suffering and I had to end it for her. It was a hard decision and has hit me harder than I had thought, so this emotional road has hit my training a bit. Haven't done any miles since Tuesday. Not sure how I am feeling about doint the ING Miami Half on Sunday, but I will get out there and get it done. This will qualify me for the Half Fanatics, doing 3 Half Marathons in a 90 day period.
I have signed up for the Princess and got a roommate!!
I have signed up for the Disneyland Half and have the room, just need the plane ticket.

-Tracy

Tracy - Sorry to hear about Mickey. I went through the same thing with my lab/chow mix Christmas week. She would've been 16 in March.
Sleeping_dogs002-1.jpg

:dance3: Congrats on becoming a half fanatic! :cheer2:

AFM, I passed on my 5k this morning; thought about walking it but am still limping so better to listen to my body and let it heal. There will be plenty more races to be run. Like my TFL, I'm sure there are other muscles that I don't know about yet that will cause problems one day.

Got out this morning and ran 3.75 miles, I think that's about 6K. It was chilly run at -18C even with the sun... Got out my ninja mask and used it for the first time but found it was hard to use. It pushed the air into my sunglasses so I couldn't see. After I took off my sunglasses, I had icicles form on my eyelashes. Managed a good pace at 9:56 m/m - I did have to stop part way through because I wasn't use to breathing in the cold air. Tomorrow is my LR of 11 miles - thankfully it will be warmer tomorrow :) -10C instead of -18

Kirstie - Good luck in Miami!! Any luck with Disney on getting the gender issue fixed?

Tracy - Sorry to hear about Mickey. I think you have a strong training base and that will carry you through the race this weekend. Good luck!!

Carrie - Sounds like some of the exercises I do at the gym :)

Megan - I agree with Maura, try getting some speedwork in. If you go to the gym, you can also try doing some plyo exercises or an agility ladder. They are pretty tough workouts though.

Hey, folks! I've been reading the thread, here and there, and am trying to stay caught up.

Hi, and welcome, Lori! I think you're doing an incredible job with your pace. That's a HUGE amount of time to cut down! :cool1:

Welcome also to Jeremy! Your plan sounds great--and it's an extra bonus that your academic calendar will let you attend marathon weekend! I like a little padding in my training plans to account for being prone to injury, not to mention accident-prone. :lmao:

Pat, just reading your half schedule exhausts me. I do like the flexibility in the half fanatics goal, though, and am thinking of following in your (and others') footsteps. How was your 5K today?

Kirstie: I'm so sorry to hear about all these hassles you've been having. Truly, the whole mix-up with your sex at the Disney races befuddles me. :confused3 Any new news on the chair?

Tracy: Have a great time at Miami! I hope you and Kirstie have a chance to meet up! :yay: Hugs for Mickey dog, and I hope getting out there on the course is good for you. Where are you staying at DL?

Tricia: You're so eloquent! :worship: What great luck having a Valentine's Day race to coincide with the virtual one you're organizing!

Jennifer: Heh. Yep, I do know you well enough to know you'd gun for a BQ soon in your career. Still impressed. :rotfl:

Indy Runners: I had no idea the race was that big. Wow. I just thought is was popular because of the location and the kind-of theming with race (car) fans.

Jane: It's hard to say what would work best for you. I think restarting C25K would be fine--with or without going faster--if you'd like to work on short distances for a while. Or you could continue with a longer distance but keeping the RW. I think it depends mostly on your work/personal schedule and how motivated your want to 1) train with longer distances over a longer period or 2) focus on a slower build of more running over a longer period. Does that make sense?

Megan: Congrats on signing up for the Princess! Ya knew ya wanted to! About speedwork--see what I said to Carrie. :goodvibes Seriously, as Maura said, RW has some speedwork plans on its site that you could adapt for a shorter training cycle.

Jackie: How did this weekend's LR go? I saw the weather. :scared1:

Maura: How's the quads/hips? Decide on a spring training schedule yet?

LuckyMom: Jeans don't lie, indeed. Yay for your success!

Richard: Congrats on the mid-week LR. Making those consistent--something I'm not good at--makes a huge difference in training and events! :thumbsup2

Carrie: You, me, on the same page with the posting here. It's kind of like the advice I get on speedwork: "The only way to get faster is to go faster."" :rotfl2: It all makes sense to my poor brain. Love/fear the Core Conversion class, in theory.:scared1:

Pam: Any angel friend of Carries's is a future angel friend of mine! :lovestruc

Vicky: I can't believe you got out there in those temps! :scared1: You're so strong! I'm proud of you.

AFM: Unlike Vicky, I chickened out of my outdoor run (and it wasn't nearly as cold). Went to the gym instead and did the TM--or DM, as the case may be. Gave me a chance to throw my weight around, too, as I work on consistency in strength training. :lmao:

I have been looking at this site just before I did the 5K UP at Disney. I really enjoyed it and now I would like to try for the Donald. I will be walking so any help I can get would be great. I did purchase Marathoning for Mortals and almost finished reading it. Would like to do a 10K close to home in April then the Space Coast 1/2 Marathon in November ( no pace requirement). I hope I am not taking on too much.
