Month of January 2010 - WISH Team Walkers and Runners Training Thread

DD17 and I are doing CMM. She's applying to Vanderbilt so this will be part of our College Tour Extravaganza!

The CMM is a great race as are all of the Competitor Group (formerly Elite Racing) events. It is a hilly race, especially after the course change they did last year, but there is a lot of support on the course. Last year there was a very large WISH contingent but this year it looks like Indy will be the big non-Disney spring WISH meet up.

Jen- If I was running the full I would do my best to help you out. My first full last year was sadly a bit over 3:40. How close are you to hitting the BQ time? I need to get down to 3:10 and I'm not sure if I can get that low by my next full, the WDW in 2011. I am going to get my miles up over the summer and see if it is a realistic goal for the race or not. I will be shooting for a 3:30 if I don't think the 3:10 is possible.

I don't know if you are going with anyone but if you want to meet up with us for dinner the night before we will be going somewhere Italian. I have the friend I am staying with plus another close friend and her fiancée so we will have a group of about 6 + a 3 month old.

I finally got into the pool at my gym today and, WOW, I am no where close to being able to do even a sprint tri yet. I watched some videos on the proper form and what to concentrate on in the water. I will have to spend a lot more time in the pool getting my breathing and form down. I think I am not exhaling enough because even though I am doing plenty of breathing I feel like I am out of air. Oh well, it looks like it will take me a while to get good in the water.

Frank, My full is what's eluding me. I'm at 3:55 and need a 3:40. According every calculator out there I should be close to 3:30, but the week and weather before both my fulls have been extremely negative on training. I have family and friends in DC, so we already have plans, but thanks.

Jennifer

Good Morning Wishers!

Coming back into the monthly thread for the first time in a bit.

Post Goofy I've done 4 runs. 5, 4, 4 and then yesterday an 8. Only the 5 miler has been outside the rest have been on the treadmill. I've been a little sore, but nothing too bad and today I feel good. Had some knee soreness yesterday, but nothing too bad.

I have my tentative Schedule lined up for the year so I'm excited about that. Most of my races will be in the fall and I'll try and find some races to do in the Spring. Right now I have 5 Half Marathons in mind for the Fall.

Take Care!
Chris

Frank and Jennifer: I'll be running the National 1/2 this year as part of my fourth back to back 1/2 weekend. I'll be running the Caesar Rodney 1/2 in Wilmington the next day.

I've done back to back 5Ks and even a 5K and 10K back to back but never back to back halves. I'm not sure if that would be harder or easier then a straight full. I would imagine harder.

The same invitation goes to you (or anyone else doing the National full or half). If you want to join our group for dinner the night before just shoot me a PM a couple of weeks out and I'll let you know where we are going to be.

To me its easier than a straight full but it may just be that I am not a fan of the full distance. I may take you up on dinner as I believe I will be traveling solo on this trip.

Not a TM hater here, but ONLY if I can go to MY gym and MY TM, the one I've trained to accept my odd gait. I've broken her in, I have. I call her Black Beauty...:rotfl2: (It doesn't hurt that she's got a TV attached to her, um, bridle?)

I generally prefer to be outside, though, even though most of my running is on sidewalks and/or hills. It's just too hard for me to find my natural pace if I spend too much time on a TM. Then again, nothing is natural about my pace...

Megan: Pfffft. Go the the Princess, bag the conference. WISHers are much more fun than your DBF, I'm sure. :rolleyes1 Better yet, make him go to the Princess. Once he meets us, he'll love us. Oh, WTG with spin class. That kind of workout really is intense!

BouncelikeTigger: Hello, and congrats on doing the Princess!

Frank: Ditto on the being slower in the TM, so I'm really impressed that you've been able to get your outdoor and TM paces so close. I'm envious that you'll be adding international distance runner to your resume. And a triathlete as well! Wowsa.

Christine: You and me, sympatico on the core/strength routine as part of our 2010 goals. You know how some people will do anything for a Klondike bar? I'll do anything to avoid that kind of training. I've been like you, really good post-Goofy, with 4 sessions in so far. But I need to find a way to continue to be accountable. Maybe I'll just draft off you. :rotfl:

Corinna: DOOD did most of his training on a TM, too, and PRed. I'm proud of both of you, and it gives me hope. But for now, I'd rather go outside if the conditions allow me to. Working my way up to being hardcore, like you.

Mel: Love the idea of a Nook, but the budget for toys vs. the budget for races....maybe as a reward for when/if I hit my 2010 half marathon goal? Great idea for you and DD to tour campuses and do races together, btw!

Bookwood: Great job with the running and XT, and I hear the CMM--which many of our fellow WISHers have done--is a great race. Yeah, WDW has gotten expensive--but I just add it to the cost of our vacation. (It falls at exactly the right time of year for me for a getaway.) Not doing the Goofy this year, though, partially because of cost. Oh, and then there's that training thing, which managed to make me gain weight. Again.

Richard: Wait, extra RnR medals? I hadn't noticed that. Must check out the website. Is this part of your goal with the Half Fanatics? Congrats on your post-Goofy 7 milers. It's always better to share them with a friend!

Vicky: Pace? Up hills? What is this steady pace of which you speak? :lmao: Just kidding. I really have to work at keeping my pace even, and often fail. But each season I get a little better, so if there's hope for me there's hope for all of you. Great job on your 10 and 5 milers, and even better news about the knees!

Jackie: Running with the big boys and girls now! :cheer2: I'm so glad to hear it--not so glad to hear you're running on icy roads. Be careful out there! Are you and DH running together these days, or are you now running with your Galloway groups? Or friends?

Ronda: Great plan for the full. I know of at least one other person, Worfiedoodles, who is planning on 2012 being her first marathon year. I'm dropping to halfs this year, myself, before I tackle Goofy again (with hopefully a stronger finish).

Jennifer: Already gunning for your BQ time. You.are.awesome! :worship: Frank, or someone else, should definitely get in on helping a WISHer hit that goal! (I'd help, but...)

Chris: Good job getting your mileage back up so soon after the Goofy. What races are you considering for the fall?

Pat: Four back-to-back 1/2s? :cheer2: Oh, I see. You're a half fanatic. What level will that put you at?

As for me: I'm envious that everyone's working out there race schedule. I'm in a holding pattern here, for various reasons. I'm back to running regularly, but without a race in the near future, it's shorter distances. Luckily, the weather here has been good for running so it's all been outside. Thank goodness for the Virtual Valentine's Day 5K/10K race to keep me feeling like there's an event on my horizon! :cheer2:

Debra - I'm planning on doing Spirit of Columbus, Disneyland, Air Force Half, Wine and Dine and the NBH Columbus Half.

I'm still on that high again from the weekend so my "Long" run was 8 miles. lol

Glad you are back into the groove of things. Hope you can sign up for a race soon. Thanks for all the work you have done with getting the teams thing going again and to Maura for taking on her new role!

I'm not a runner, I'm planning on walking the half next Jan. at WDW.

I am way out of shape these days. I am a type 1 diabetic and I also have plantar fasciitis in both feet. Ugh.

I have given myself the goal to get in shape and train for the half. I will do my best in it. I figure if a Disney freak like myself can't get motivated to walk a half marathon in my happy place, then who knows what else will motivate me!

I thought I needed to post here first. How do people get involved with teams? Does everyone get on a team, or is it up to the individual? This forum is overwhelming me to be honest and I don't know where to start reading/researching.

My DH and I joined Planet Fitness but have only gone a few time so far. I also have Wii Active at home. My goal is to reach a 15 min mile pace. So far I have knocked it down from like 26 to 22 (told you I'm out of shape) in only a short while.

My DH will be walking as well, but is in much better shape than me but has never done any endurance events (though he is a mover so....)

Anyway, if someone could point me in a few directions etc, has any advice etc. It seems to me everyone on this thread so far is a pretty serious runner...but I won't be deterred! :)

FireDancer/Frank-My husband is a HUGE Manchester United supporter! He's from Ireland. We actually met watching the Euro Cup Qualifiers back in '07 at a pub in NYC. I support Liverpool, so you could imagine the ahem...discussions in our house! LOL...

Looking forward to getting more involved! :goodvibes

Pat: Four back-to-back 1/2s? :cheer2: Oh, I see. You're a half fanatic. What level will that put you at?

I just joined Half Fanatics last fall. Based on my state chasing, I was already on Mars (5 Moons) having run 13 1/2's in 13 different states in a 365 day period. In order to get to Earth/6 Moons I need to run 6 1/2 marathons in 16 days which amounts to back to back 1/2's for 3 consecutive weekends. Just trying to figure out the logistics of that gets me tired. That may be something I'll look into next year.

Just had a look at the Marathon certifcats and Disney still has me as a man!!!!!!!

The team have put me into the full at Miami, and my regesteration has come back as the 1/2!!!!!!

My new chair order has been screwed up!!!!!!!!

I need to scream........sorry.

I have emaild Disney, say that I want it changed.

I have emailed and left a phone message for our captain asknig to change me to the full, as I am not doing the 1/2.

as for my chair I give up, even my Dh is fed up and that takes a lot, he is going to try to sort it.

I haven't trained in 5 days, so tomorrow we're off to the trail, I need a few miles to blow this off!!!!!!!!

Welcome Lori. This is the place to be as you train for the Disney half. Don't feel out of place - we are a friendly group who accepts everyone of any ability. As long as you have the courage to start you are in the right place. As far as teams - we are just trying to get the teams back up and going for the year. It seems they take a hiatus after the Marathon weekend in January since so many of us participated and now is somewhat just getting back into the swing of things - I think there are a few posts that refer to the different teams - you can either ask to be put on a team or pick a team to join - or you don't have to be on a team at all - its all up to you. We are a pretty easy going, friendly team.

Glad to hear everyone is getting back into training after the marathon 2 weeks ago. As for me I got out on Saturday for a short run/walk for the first time since the Goofy. I drove to the beach and went along the sidewalk at the beach. Not sure how much it actually was - about 2 miles or just over. I passed my truck 3 times so I left my drink in the truck and took a break each time I went by. It took me 42 minutes and was WAY hotter than the last time I ran. I didn't tape my hip and I could feel it bothering me. Also my ankle was a little sore and my foot had a weird pain in it. At first I thought it was my shoe but no matter what I did it didn't help. So at least I got in my first post Goofy run.

Other than that I have a 5k scheduled for Valentine's Day and that coincides with the Wish Virtual Valentine's Day 5k/10k. So I have to get some running/walking in soon.

Have a good week everyone!!

Bookwood
- Welcome! I agree that WDW is getting way too expensive. DD has said if she likes Indy that she may want to do the Disney half, but I'm kinda hoping she doesn't. I'd like to take a year off. I was really unhappy with their execution this year and would like to keep some of my money!

Jackie

Have you done Indi? Indi is the only race I've done that's more crowded than WDW all the way through the course, from beginning to end it was hard to navigate and stay on my pace without feeling I was either in someones way or they were in mine. Good Luck though it's great to run on the race track!

Debra, You've known me long enough to know it wouldn't be too long before I was gunning for it.

Pat and Frank, I'm pleasantly surprised we'll have a nice little WISH group in DC.

Yesterday was a rest day. Today is the start of track conditioning. Did I mention I'm coaching high school girls now?

Best,
Jennifer

Hi Everyone out there -

I've been missing for a while but am trying to get back into the routine. I have a question. Last year I did the C25K plan and loved it. After that I kind of bounced around between different running plans and finally wound up doing a MFM run/walk in hopes of doing a half marathon here in the spring. I'm no longer doing that half and now I feel a little like I'm in a rut.

I feel like I am not motivated by the run/walk but have also lost my endurance at running the longer distance. I remember running 30 minutes in the summer but now feel like that is such a giant goal again.

I was thinking about starting over with the C25K plan (trying to run a bit faster from the beginning) and getting back up to where I was. Then moving on for the Wine n dine half in October. Is this a wise plan or am I just setting myself back again.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated......

Wow!
Wow!
Wow!
You ARE most definitely a fanatic!!! :dance3:

(...and you are just down the road from me as I am right outside of The Woodlands!!)

I did it! I booked for the Princess! I have my flight booked and I will be working on my DVC reservations for my first trip home. I'll be staying at BLT. My mom did just tell me that she won't be able to join me, so if anyone is looking for a roomie for the weekend, let me know!

Hi All
I had posed in another thread and decided to also Start posting here. I am starting my milage building for the Cleveland 1/2 Marathon on May 16th. This will be my first half marathon. Prior to this, I have competed in 2 5K's and 1 10K. As far as training, I'm looking at doing a slightly modified "Marathoning for Mortals" half marathon walking training plan although I may try throwing some of the Walk/Run plan into the weekday training.

As far as training, last week I did 3mi Monday, 4mi Wednesday, and 3 Miles Saturday. While not exact, I will be counting that as week 2 of the training plan. If my counting is right, that gives me 4 extra week for illness, slower progress, etc.

Longer term, I'm looking at possible doing the Disney half marathon in 2013. You may wonder why the long time away. Primarily, the college I work for is changing academic calendars in 2012-2013 and I should still be on Christmas break during marathon weekend. Less so, my pace is real close to the 16 min mile pace requirement. My 10K pace last Sept was 15:40.

Debra - DH and I run together during the week. My weekend long runs are with my off-season Galloway group. (He joins us sometimes, but complains that we're WAY too slow for him.)

Lori - :welcome: You're in exactly the right place. We all started right where you are. There are many WISHers who walk the half, the full, or both. There's a separate thread for people who want to join a team (fun but not required). The teams this year are a way to get to know people a little better in smaller groups, or you can continue to post on the main thread (this one). Look around - there are many different topics and you may find several that interest you.

Syko - Go ahead and scream! Then tackle one problem at the time.

Bookwood - This will be my first time at Indy. I've heard that it's huge, and I'm expecting to be completely overwhelmed by the crowds. But DD19 is an enormous Indy racing fan, so we're doing this partially for her, and partially for the WISH group experience. That lap around the track is going to be a huge deal for her. I don't really have a time goal for that race - if I haven't met my goals by then, they'll have to be on hiatus so we can just enjoy the experience.

Jane - Just one suggestion. Find a local shorter race to sign up for, maybe a 5K, that's closer than Wine & Dine. Then start C25K again with a specific target in mind, while adding in some longer runs after you're comfortable. October is a long way off, and it sounds like you need something to keep you motivated.

Johde - :welcome: The more, the merrier!

After a successful 7 miles on Saturday, had planned to run yesterday. Left work with a migraine :headache: and went home and crawled in bed and immediately fell into the deepest sleep I can remember in ages! I think my body might have needed the nap more than the run. Guess that means I'm supposed to do the 4-5 miles tonight. Just saw the forecast for this weekend, and it looks like I may get to do Saturday's LR in Disney Alaska conditions. They're calling for sleet, freezing rain, and snow, which in our area is almost as unusual as in Orlando. Have I mentioned that I'm tired of cold and wet?

Jackie
