Month of August - WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Sarah - what a cutie! Congrats to the whole family!! Can't wait to meet him in person in January.

Hi everyone-
I'm Mindy and I am a newbie on this thread. I am a walker (at least so far). My son is a dedicated runner, and has been helping me as much as he can, but I am interested in chatting with other walkers, since he freely admits that running and walking sometimes have different "rules". I've walked for weight loss purposes for many years on and off. Two and a half years ago I had some health problems and decided I needed to get serious about things and start taking care of myself. So far I have lost 120 pounds by proper diet/portion sizes and exercise (the "old-fashioned" way, as I call it). I'd still like to lose another 10-15, but I am at least now out of the "Overweight" range for BMI, and considered "Normal" (or as normal as I get! ;)) I got serious about my walking, and after watching from the sidelines while my son did his first Half at WDW in 2009, made a pledge with myself to train and meet the pace requirement for the 5K in 2010. Happy to report that despite a knee injury from a fall 2 weeks before the race, I was able to walk it in 46 minutes! :thumbsup2 My son is doing the Hershey Half Marathon in October, and my husband and I are going to walk it as a relay team (a half Half each). Their pace requirements are less stringent than Disney, but I am still training at a fast pace, because I would love to attempt the Half when DS does the full at WDW in 2012.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and join the team. I've already been lurking on one of the walking threads, and plan to join in shortly.

:welcome: Mindy! Congratulations on your accomplishments so far!

Congratulations Sarah! He's a cutie. Ready to race already! :cool1:

Jackie

Hi Ronda! Thanks for the Polar shout out :) Garmin always comes to mind first for me, I'll have to check out Polar. :) Last night I decided to just do my 3 miles and concentrate on the uneven sidewalk rather than my pace. We both finished happier. Me, less stressed. Garmie ... alive for another day. :thumbsup2

CONGRATS SARA ROSE!!!!! He's a adorable!!!!

Welcome Mindy!!! :flower3:

Dawg Days of summer...I felt like a dog with my tongue hanging out after the 10 miles this morning. 99% humidity and 75 degrees, but it's done and now I can taper for the DL 1/2.

Jackie Hope your hips feels better and better and you don't have to have surgery.

For you "watch" watcher be careful. I'm not a "watch" watcher and stumbled and fell in May and tore both thumb ligaments and it is still not well. Very painful injury-not complaining as after the doctor looked at it, he then said "you can still run"

Have a great week and drink plenty of water!;)

Hi M indy - Welcome to WISH!

OMG Sarah Rose - he is adorable! Look forward to seeing him at Pop.

I'm back from a short beach vacation. Had a great time, except for the end. Ever notice when you want to try something "one last time" then that's when you get hurt? Ugh!
I was on the beach Saturday, in and out of the ocean. Weather and water was great. So, just before I'm ready to leave, I tell my niece I'm going in to catch a few last waves. Well, the 2nd wave got me. They were coming in fast. I dove under the first. Saw the 2nd and planted my feet to brace for the hit. Unfortunately, the wave was big and knocked me backwards, but my left foot stuck in the sand. I could feel the crunch of my hamstring pulling. Saw a few stars. The worst is when I sit in a charit and my leg presses against the seat. Ouch!

I know there's no quick fixes and it'll need a little time to heal. I did ice it and wrap it. Been keeping it elevated whenever possible. It just sucks because I was going to do a 1/2 in mid-Sept. Hoping it'll heal enough.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!

Terri

SarahCongrats and welcome to Callum!

Jackie Sorry to hear about the hip and hope your runs are okay and that you can still do MCM.

Diane Watch out for those "evil" sidewalks. They will trip you up when they get the chance!

Ronda Let's hear it for cool weather. My DS--who HATES winter actually said she wished it was since she is so sick of the heat! This am feels pretty good to me--why wasn't it this way yesterday?

Debra Hope your autumn is more stable than the summer. And to those of us who don't do facebook or twitter or any other social media platform (I'm probably the only one!), glad to see you.

Mindy Welcome to the Wonderful World of WISH!

Joan Ouch for the thumb. I face planted on the sidewalk last year--walking, no less. But no serious injuries--just embarassment!

Terri Hope the hamstring heals quickly. Not a good way to end a vacation!

As for me....winding down the time til I send my youngest off to school--I miss his moody teenage presence already!

So I managed my own "barefoot" injury the other day--was walking over to a friend's around the corner and just must have stepped on a rock or something. Bruised my heel. Bagged one of my runs just to let it recover, but it hasn't so far. It's not bad, just a bruise--but it's the location that makes it challenging.

Did my 13 yesterday--this was a "low mileage" LR week. I was looking forward to it since I figured it would be a leisurely run. No such luck! My plan called for a pace that is faster than the runs that I have been doing lately. Not a really fast pace--but in this weather, it is hard. I made it through, but it was more work than I was expecting.

Time to go hit the gym--I'm uninspired......

Maura

Joan regarding the watch-watching ;) I've come to an agreement with my Garmie. I will ignore it till I need to know roughly how close to the mileage I'm looking for when running around the neighborhood. :thumbsup2

Maura! That sidewalk jumped up and tried to grab me! I had to outrun it:scared1: Seriously, that piece of sidewalk needed to be RE replaced. It looked to be somewhat new since it is still nice and white. It sticks up at least an inch on the one corner which is what I think grabbed my shoe. I watch other areas and even in the really really pitch dark section will run on the road. Gotta watch out for twigs, 1 house had a ton of twigs on their sidewalk. Thankfully I'm aware of them and watch for all those 'special' places. They do not leave with me with the warm fuzzy feelings. :headache:

Joan I hope the shot helps you feel better and that later you don't need surgery.

Lindybug YAY! on the Marathon! :cheer2:

Teri Hope the hamstring heals quickly. No suggestions just a lot of PD for a quick healing :wizard:

Well, it looks like I'm out of the RnR Philly race in Sept. Went to doc today for my hammie. She took one look at the back of my leg and said "I think you tore that baby". Going to see Ortho tomorrow (luckily they had a cancellation). But she told me not to even think about the Sept. race. The medal looked so cool!

Hoping that I can rehab to be ready for the Monster Dash in late Oct. Right now the back of my leg is one big blotch of red. Ewww!

Terri

Oh Terri! So sorry to hear this. I hope your able to recover in time for the Dash. That sucks! Sending you tons of PD :flower3:

On other news, after reading your post the other day the memory of you niece and her surprise race in January popped in my head. How is she doing? I couldn't remember if she was already racing or new to it. Wondering if she was still at it. :)

Hang in there, this to shall heal and pass!

Thanks Diane.

My niece has sworn NEVER to do a full marathon again. The things she told me she was thinking about Mickey from mile 21-to the finish :scared1:. Good thing she never saw him or tehy may be looking for a new Disney mascot! ;) She said her knees were killing her! We were hoping to go to DL to get the
C2C medal, but airfare never got reasonable, so we'll have to try it another year. My niece will stick to halfs from now on (I may have to do her registration so she doen't make another boo boo like last year )

Terri

Terri - ouch and dang. Hoping for fast healing. Rest and recover.

Lindybug - welcome aboard!

Mauar - the weather the last two days has been amazing. 20 degrees cooler. Biking and running like I've been training in the heat!

Sarah - he's beautiful.

Mindy - welcome! Doesn't "normal" feel great. I'm on the cusp of being normal, too.

Yesterday's run was great. Good splits and easy recovery. A little stiffness in my left knee. I've decided that's from running and then sitting at my desk for eight hours. After my long runs (Saturday) I keep moving and don't have problems. Another 4 tomorrow and 9 on Saturday. Whee!

I've made a room only ressie for marathon weekend. Since nothing else is refundable, that's as far as I'm willing to go now. But it's SOMETHING.

Ronda

Diane: I broke the Garmin fixation by running a measley amount of miles, mostly without the watch. I kept forgetting to a) pack it during several trips or b) charge it. So being disorganized has its odd benefits. Of course, now I'm totally hooked on my iPod and DIS podcasts, so I'm not winning the "over-reliance on technology" game. :lmao:

I totally agree with both you and Ronda about the love-hate relationship. Just having it sit on a dresser is enough to get me out the door, even without it strapped on my wrist.

Ronda: Woo hoo on the room ressies for January. That's on my list, somewhere, sometime. Gotta commit to something about the weekend, right? And a bigger woo hoo :woohoo: for yesterday's run. Like you, I always feel better if I move after a LR – it's the sitting that kills me.

Sarah: Oh, my, Callum is just a handsome lad! :lovestruc We're always happy to have another WISHer around, especially at POP. And I think he'll steal more than a few hearts. And kudos to you for instilling the running spirit in him from the womb and so soon after birth. :cool1:

Mindy: Welcome, welcome! I think you'll like it here – we have a great team for support in all areas and the walkers just blow me away with their knowledge. (Not to mention many of them can beat my time!) :worship:

Joan: Ouch! Torn thumb ligaments sound absolutely excruciating. Sure, you can run, but all the other things.... I hope you've recovered, mostly, and with as little pain as possible. And I'm with you about those dog days of summer. They make me want to howl.

Terri: Speaking of pain, I'm so sorry to hear about your torn hammy. Not only painful and bad timing, but the accident can really color what sounded like a marvelous beach vacation. I know you're experienced enough to let it heal properly, but I'll say "be careful" anyway. Your doctor does know best, and think about how cool that Monster medal will look. I bailed on DL 1/2, too, due to cost & an over-committed summer travel schedule. Luckily, I don't think that race is going away anytime soon.

Maura: Excellent job on the 13! I can't ever imagine you as uninspired in your workouts! And you always seem to hit your goals with style and grace. Maybe you could video yourself walking with a bit of limp, thanks to your bruised heel. That would make me feel less like the accident-prone oaf that I am. Yeah, thanks for helping me out with the ego. :rotfl2:

Lindy: Welcome to the madness! You'll love it here – when I don't post, I miss it!

AFM: Still keeping to the short mileage this week. But I didn't feel totally wiped today (or this weekend) like I have been. Must be back-to-school time – I can't count it as fall yet, but there is that shift in the weather that whispers sweet promises in my ear. Yay!

No big fall races planned – just can't manage the work & travel calendar this year. Too many other commitments. Which is kind of good, as I can concentrate on local events & January as my treat. Right? (Someone talk me out of sulking about canceled plans.) :lmao:

Thanks Ronda & Debra!

Saw the Ortho today. He said no impact activities (running/jumping, etc.) for 4-6 weeks. Can't even bike or do teh elliptical for 2-3 weeks, depending on how PT goes. The resident/intern was shocked when he asked to look at my hammie and saw the size of the bruise. Said I "did it good" and he was impressed. Yeah, thanks a lot.

So I'm gonna turn my lemons into lemonade. Besides resting & rehabbing the hammie, I'll spend the next 4-6 weeks working on my core and upper body strength. Core is definitely not my strong point (those darn choc. chip cookies ;)) so this will force me to work on it since I won't be able to do much else.

Welcome Lindy!

Maura - great job on your 13!

Terri

Terri sorry to hear about the length of the rehab for the hammie but Go Terri Go on the Core training!!!! Good idea to focus on that as a positive :thumbsup2

Debra you've noticed the discounts for the room reservations right? :teacher: But hey, thanks for letting me take care of that 1st so I wasn't DEAD last on the ressie front ;) I'm going thru the pro's and con's of the hotel choice. The major pro: Location = My peeps. :thumbsup2

Hit the gym last night. No running. Me and George (TM) weren't seeing eye to eye. Or maybe George got the memo that I wasn't suppose to run last night & decided to annoy me enough to make me walk away  Did the circuit and thought about quitting after the 2nd trip. A heavy sigh and sucking it up along with a healthy does of internally whining that I was tired and hungry and I finished the workout. Today I feel like a Disney bus ran me over. But that could be the allergies, it's mostly my head. Feels like someone put bricks in there.

This weekend's challenge and goal: Settle on a training plan. A real one, not one that I toss together although that did work last year :) But this year I feel I need a plan so I don't injure myself.

Happy Training all! :cheer2:

Me and George (TM)
I'm a relative newcomer... but, the treadmill has a name? I find it easier to curse them if they are like other drivers, anonymous and bad.

Terri - good positive spin.

Nine miles planned for tomorrow. Excited about a new route, too.

I hope everyone gets their run in.

Ronda

LOL Ronda. Oh I have my bad days with that TM but after running my first 8 miles with not a stop I was a bit delirious. All my good TM runs take place on that one TM. I decided I was going to keep it. "I will name him George, and I will hug him, and pet him, and squeeze him" I took a pic of the TM screen showing the distance which was my phone's wall paper till the Goofy medal :) I was a pretty happy gal that day.

Actually last week I was mentally calling it names and giving it the evil eye. We don't always have a good workout together. Those days I just walk away and head to the circuit :thumbsup2

In non-training news. Today I had a hawk land in my yard. Ok, landing might be mild to what it actually had in mind. But all my little birdies had flew the coop and were safe :) It was wild seeing that HUGE beastie standing on the ground next to my feeder pole. Wild!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I will name him George.
Love that episode!

Nine miles done. New route was a good idea. The trail I normally use for Saturday runs was sloppy after storms last night. New route was challenging though. Lots of up and down through neighborhoods, parks and creek bottoms. Really pushed me. I used a 5/1 run walk and averaged 12:30.

Weather has been much better. Upper 80s, low 90s. Yea!

Ronda

Glad the weather worked to for you today Ronda :) I have to relocated my Garmin book to try something like a 5/1. Last time I tried, let's just sat I must have set it up wrong because during what should have been the 'walk' portion the stop watch paused until the 'run' portion started again.

Tonight, ran 4 miles with my training partner. She tends to push at the start but otherwise she's good company. We had good weather, about 73* at 9 pm with humidty that was bearable. We ran thru this little park (I mean LiTTLE) and I hit a puddle or something and felt my shoe go squish. The other thing I love about the training partner. She wasn't offended when I said "will you sniff this and tell me if I just stepped in do-do?" She assured me I was safe to walk in the house later and to start running again. :dogdance:paw:paw:paw:

Hoping everyones having a great weekend!
