Month of April 2010 - WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Diane - Thanks! I went and had my ankle assessed and I have a grade 1 inversion sprain. I can still run if I use sports tape but seeing how it's still slightly painful when I do a fast walk, I'm probably going to stay away from running for a few weeks :( It's hard when the weather is nice and everyone is out running but I'd rather have it heal properly rather than get worse. My physio didn't believe that I was a real runner when he heard me say that

Hey all,

Diane Glad to "see" you again. I haven't made it out to Stony Creek or environs lately--have you? I see there's a running club in those parts that I may try to hook up with in the future if I have long runs to do. They're called Your Pace or Mine.

Susie No ice cream....yet. Just got busy and didn't get to it. Plus, didn't have quarts of cream lying around the house! I also did 20 miles on Saturday with my DH and some friends--fortifies in the mddle with a stop for bagels and coffee. It was nice to get out and ride.

Frank Congrats on the race result. And are you still able to get the park ticket since they closed down the program?

Carrie Clipless aren't bad once you get the hang of them. I have fallen twice, with no harm done. Once on a trail when my DH made a sudden turn to avoid another rider, and another time in someone's driveway--that was the embarassing one. I just forgot to unclip!

Vicky Hope your foot heals quickly.

As for me....still training for a yet-to-be-determined 10k the first weekend in May. And we are still enduring the saga of college selection for DS, which may take me to Boston this weekend. Otherwise I was thinking of running Martian Half in lieu of my scheduled 10 mile LR.

Baseball is off to a nice start with both the Togers and Red Sox winning the season openers. If only the weather would stay this nice through April.

Maura

Well, as it happens that is very likely going to be a half I do this year. I was looking for a half in a state I need for Half2run and for one that ends up being as inexpensive as possible and this one was the cheapest by almost half.

I probably won't decide until the summer but I would say it is about 85%-90% that I will end up doing it.
I ran Parkersburg this past August. It was hot and hilly. It was pretty funny in that there were mostly locals running it and a handful of Kenyans competing for prize money. You could definetely tell who was there to compete. It was a fun race; the whole Homecoming celebration was pretty cool.
I'm thinking that it might be a "fun run/walk" kind of thing for me since the hills and heat will probably not allow me to accomplish anything else. Frank, you'll probably be half way home before I even finish the half!

See, if there would not be a huge rush on Boston this weekend, there's a 13.1 event running near Boston (they call it 13.1 Boston, but it's not in the city proper). You could combine the Boston tour with the event AND we could see you at Martian! Just thinkin' out loud...
:thumbsup2
It has been incredibly warm and lovely around these parts. Very summer-like. I kinda was hoping to have spring though. I like the spring. It is great though to be able to get out and do things out there instead of indoors. Lovin' every moment.

Susie, I'm thinking I've got Little Rock on my 2012 calendar. It will be fun to have a mini WISH moment.

Maura- Yes, I am able to get the voucher. You just had to be registered and have your entry accepted before the program closed. You didn't have to have the volunteering completed. At least that is what they said. We'll find out when I go to turn in the form.

Lily- Nonsense. If I do the race I'll stick around for any WISHers to finish.

Went out and did a quick 5 today. It was a bit warm again so it wasn't as quick as I would like but it felt good. If the rain hold I am thinking Thursday might be my first track workout of the year. We'll see how mother nature feels about that.

Diane - I have a road bike - Specialized Ruby Comp. The seat I have is the one that came with the bike. It is actually more comfortable than the seat on my comfort bike and that seat is bigger and more cushiony. I think that's because of the way I sit on the bike. On the comfort bike, I sit in a more straight position...putting a lot of weight on my rear end. On the road bike, I lean over more, distributing the weight. I think that makes a difference. Now, I do know that bike shops have this little board thing you can sit on to help determine the kind of seat you need. You may just have the wrong seat for your body/skeletal frame. Check it out.

Carrie - for the tri, I would probably do a side stroke as well...and anything else that will get me where I need to be. In my earlier message I said I wanted to do a spring tri. I meant SPRINT tri. ;)

As for clip-on pedals, I had them and took them off. Now I have the cages. However, I'll probably go back to the clips. The clips I had were difficult for me to get in and out of. The owner of the bike shop where I bought them told me that he would switch them out for me. Apparently, he got quite a few complaints on this particular model. I thought maybe that I was too uncoordinated to make it work. ;) As for falling with the clips - twice - once at a stop sign and once going up a steep hill that I just couldn't quite conquer. I couldn't get out of the clips fast enough.

Lily - Yea on the LR half for 2012! Maybe we can recruit other WISHers! 10th anniversary!!! :thumbsup2 I know that jims2cool wants to go to the Diamond mind in Arkansas. Someone found a 3 carat yellow diamond there the other day. I'd like to find one the size of the hope diamond. :D

Frank - you ought to consider LR for 2012. OKC is a good one to do as well. There are several of us doing it this year. I did it 2 years ago and I was really impressed.

Susan - I wish I were going to the Indy Half. I just can't get away that weekend. Looks like there will be quite a few WISHers going. I'm sure it will be a great event. Good luck!

Maura - sounds like Lily has a great solution for you - running-wise. :D That martian race sounds fun!

Vicki - Sending :wizard: for your foot. Sounds like staying off of it for a while might be the best thing you can do for it right now. Like you said, better to get it healed properly than taking a chance and making it worse.

Things have been going all right for me. I'm now 53 days from my next big race, and finally starting to get back into a pattern of actual training, after a few sporadic weeks (wasn't feeling well).

Unfortunately, missed my chance for a long run outside tonight, as I was stuck at work (ugh!), but tomorrow I should be able to make up for it.

Hope everyone is doing well, and getting into "spring" mode!

Wanted to pop in and say hi! I'm Stephanie btw. I'm just speed walking and only when I have the energy to at this point. Baby will be out of me in no later than 7 weeks, 6 weeks of lighter excercise and back to being active again. I can't wait to start training for the Princess in full gear... Bad that the main thing I'm looking forward to is new running shoes and excuse to buy smaller clothing? Haha. :D It's weird to be excited about something again.

:welcome: Stephanie!

Susan - Counting down to Indy as well. Gonna try to squeeze in a 5K before then just to keep it interesting.

We're trying to decide on a fall marathon. Really, really want to do Marine Corps, but don't know if I can commit before it fills. If not, one of my running buddies and I are tossing around Philadelphia, and if all else fails, maybe OBX. We did Richmond last year and really liked it, but want something new this year. Chicago was our first choice, but by the time we decided it was too late! Suggestions?

Jackie

Well, another week down, I did 4 1/2 Miles Monday and Wednesday, and decided to do 9 miles on Friday. I completed my 9 miles in 2:28, or a little under 16:30 per mile. I felt better at the end of this 9 miles than I did 2 weeks ago. I put mole skin across the balls of my feet and that seemed to help. One of them rolled a little bit so I needed to stop and remove it part way through, I may need to use 2 strips so they can wrap around the side and be less likely to roll up. 5 weeks left to go and I'm still not sure if I'm completely ready. I tried gel for the first time. No ill effects from that. My plan is to carry a pack of Power Bar gummy gel balsts (bought several of those when CVS had them free after extra bucks). I'm going to eat 1 of those about every mile (9 in a pack). I also plan on carrying water to chase it down with. Then take the provided gel about mile 8-9. I also plan on drinking the Gatorade at each water stop. I test ran that this week with carrying bottles of water and gatorade.

Stephanie, Welcome!

Jeremy, congratulations on getting those 9 miles. I think your plan is going to work. Hope you can get the mole skin thing working for you.

Jackie, good luck picking out that marathon. I'm on the 1 a year Goofy marathon plan.

Back from Martian half in Dearborn. Was a good event. Maura posted on the Race reports/encouragement thread and gave a great overview.

Lily- Nonsense. If I do the race I'll stick around for any WISHers to finish.
Frank - That tends to be our motto too. I had to laugh at seeing this as I can't tell you how many times lIly told us Friday and Saturday that we did not have to wait for her post-race. Sorry, not our style. She was stuck with us. :p Glad you are doing better with teh heat now!

Susie - I am so uncoordinated. After Liz's fall 2 years ago, I just know that I will be the first person in history to break her neck due to clipless pedals. I have coem close to forgettign to take my feet out of the baskets. :rolleyes1

Diane - Huge thanks again for being there Saturday. How wonderful! Plus posting the pix? You are the best! :grouphug:

Stephanie - Welcome!!!!

I had a first this weekend. never had anyone run us in before. Don't know how Maura had teh strngth after a PR adn placing in her age group, but she ran us in quite a ways at the finish. too fun! Thansk Maura!

Nice weather adn WIShers, what more could I want from a race. Amrtian was very fun. I was pleased with my time too. I may be coing back. now, to have the orthodics guy make some fixes tomorrow. these blisters and hot spots are getting ridiculous!

Jeremy- It sounds like you are on your way. I would caution you about taking a sports drink at every stop though. If you think it is what you need you would know better then me but I don't know anyone that doesn't at least alternate every other stop with water and sports drink.

I went out and got in a 10 miler tonight. The last 2 were a bit rough but not too bad. I had a bloody toe for about the last 4. It didn't hurt but I could feel the sticky sock that is a sure sign of a toe nail that should have been cut.

Frank- Thanks for the convern. I haven't seen the final map with water stops but last year the stops were about every 2 miles (or about 32 minutes at my hopeful race pace). I my plan is currently to carry my water with me. So I'll be alternating between the water I'm carrying and drinking the sports drink provided. I've been trying to test that out during my long walks. Drinking the sports drink about every 2 miles and drinking water if need be in between. It has worked well so far.

This past week or so has been pretty good. My training plan had a cut back week so my long walk was 6 miles it went well except I still need to decide my exact footwear choice. At this point I have 2 similar pairs of shoes and 2 different pairs of insoles. This weekend I do my 10 mile long walk and will hopefully get all of that worked out.

I have been trying to add some speed work to 1 one my short training secession the past couple of weeks. The past 2 Mondays I started off with a 1/2 mile warmup walk followed by alternating walk/run (although I use the term run loosely) for the next 1 1/2 miles. Last week I did 1:30/1:30 walk/run, this week, I did 2:00/2:00 walk/run. After that I walked the remaining 2 1/2 miles except for one 100m sprint. I walk along a Rail/trail with 1/2 mile marks. At the 2 mile mark, there is lines marked at 40yd, 100m, 200m, and 400m that I used for the sprint. The running has felt pretty good. After the Half in Cleveland, I may try to work up to 5K of solid (or nearly solid) running and walk/running longer distances in training to a fall race.

Jeremy Congrats on another week of good training. And glad to hear that your speed work is working for you. I enjoy my speed work--it makes me feel speedy! (Yes, that sounds incredibly dumb, but it does). Good luck on your upcoming race.

My "spring training" ends next week. I have a 10k on May 1 that is the end of my current training plan. Since I ran so well at the Martian half, I am hopeful that the 10k will be good, but if I don't PR, at least I have Martian. Then it's on to summer--we'll see what I end up doing.

Hope everyone else is motoring along smoothly.

Maura

Maura - Good luck on your 10K. This thread has been pretty quiet hasn't it.

Last Friday I did my peak 10 mile training walk before Cleveland. I did 9 miles on the Rail/Trail where I'm been doing most of my training. Then a 1/2 mile up the hill into town and 1/2 a mile back down. There is a hill in mile 10-11 at Cleveland and I wanted to practice going up one late in the training. The 9 miles on the trail and 1/2 mile down the hill went really well. The 1/2 mile up the hill was tough. Fortunately the hill in Cleveland is not as high and spread out over a longer distance so It's not as steep. This week I'm scheduled to do an 8 mile long had and I will probably tackle the hill 1 more time. This 10 mile walk ties the longest walk I've EVER done. The last time I did this distance was a 10 mile walk-a-thon I did for world hunger in Elementary school. That time it probably took my all afternoon. This time I did it in about 2:45-2:50 (2:28 for 9 miles to the hill).

After completing the 10 miles, I am fairly confident I can finish the 1/2 maraton the main question is time. I'm hoping for between 3:30 and 3:45, or about a 16-17 min mile. Most of my long walks have been at about 16:30. So I think it is possible. I'll just need to keep track of my pace. Not starting out too fast and crashing part way through or starting out too slow not being able to make up time later on. The course time limit is 4:00 with the lasts finishers at about 4:11 so I don't need to be too worried about beating the clock or finishing last.

Jeremy - You are going to do awesome! Dh and I alwys peak at 10 for a half. With teh crowds and race day adrenaline, you should be able to at least keep your pace if not pick it up a hair. Don't worry about time to much, though. Finishing is the best goal for your first time. There is no reason to do your frist half marathon adn feel any disappointment at the end! Hope teh race is great! 3 more weeks?

Maura - You will do awesome with your 10K! Can't wait to hear when your summer goals are announced!

Dh and I have slacked a bit since coming back from WDW. We've had good excuses, though. :upsidedow Yes, they wer excuses and not really reasons. We did get a good swim in last night. With class, we haven't had a lot of time to do any endurancec work. I am thrilled with my progress!!! Still slow compared to teh rest of the tri world, but great for me!

Now, if I can survive teh hills of Cincinatti this weekend......

Apropos of nothing in particular.......

I was at the gym today, where there is a bank of 9 TV's next to one another. So Fox News was showing on the Far Left, and CNN was showing on the Far Right. What's wrong with this picture? :)
