I used to call home collect when I was in college. One night I made the call and my sister answered the phone. The operator asked if her mother was there to accept the charges and then asked for her father when she said mother wasn't there.
No dad at home either. The operator asked for a babysitter or some adult. Again - no one. Finally the operator said "Are you old enough to be home by yourself?" to which my sister answered in a tiny little voice "Sure I'm SIX years old."
There had been a mix up and each parent thought the other was taking care of her. I was 500 miles away wondering why my baby sister was alone in the house.
