Mommy and Jack’s Fall adventure! or Things I Learned About Traveling as a Single Mom!

Woo hoo! Welcome to all my new readers!! Sorry I haven't updated lately, I have been focused on a job I'm interviewing for... in TAMPA!! So close to the magic! I still ahve no idea if I am going to get it, but I've been spending a lot of time stressing about it, and less time here on DIS. I promise to get started on day 3 tomorrow while I am at work and bored!

So to pick up where I left off... Jack was passed out cold after our long and adventurous night at Epcot. I got up, got ready, and took some pictures of the room.

I had originally wanted to make it to DHS for rope drop sinc ei had heard about horrendous waits for TSM, but i knew that since we didn't get to sleep after 12, there was no way Jack was getting up before 9. Eventually he started to stir, so Ihelped the wakeup process along. We were out the door shortly after 9.
ry%3D400

Side note: Jack was not a big breakfast eater on this trip. He didn't like pop tarts, and i would ask him if he was hungry and he would say no. Then 5 minutes later he would ask for pretzel goldfish, so that's what he would have. He always ate plenty at lunch and dinner so I wasn't too concerned, but I do wonder about our December trip... It seems if he can't have his normal microwave pancakes, he doesn't want anything!

We got on a bus pretty quickly and were heading into DHS a little before 9:30. The bag check here was EXTRA thorough, but at least they are doing their jobs! We hurried towards TSM first thing. I was thinking it's only 30 minutes afer RD, it can't be that bad, and f it is we can just get a FP right? Well when we got there, the wait was 50 minutes and the FP return time was already 2:05!! I grabbed a FP, but by the time I got up there it was 2:10. It was also starting to sprinkle. I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and wait in the 50 minute line. I really wanted Jack to eba ble to ride twice, but I knew we would probably be leaving right after Block Party Bash at 3, so there was no way we were going to get a second fastpass. I was armed with candy, Jack's toy story book, and plenty of pretzel goldfish, so we got in line...

Jack was a bit nervous the first time around. He insited on holding my hand, and he didn't score any points, but he was very entertained. I love this ride! I was glad I had decided to wait, Jack did pretty well in line, and by the time we got out at 10:30 (the wait was almost EXACTLY 50 minutes) the FP return time was already after 7 pm!
ry%3D400

Also while we were in line, the clouds had disappeared and it was a lovely sunny day! We headed to The Great Movie ride next. Jack got really scared during the gunfight and started crying, but by the end he was fine. After this we went to Playhouse Disney Live! Jack had a ton of fun here even thought before this trip the only show he watched was Micky Mouse Clubhouse (since this trip he is also an avid fan of Handy Manny). I thought it was pretty cute, though I am not a fan of sitting on the floor. I know I will not be able to drag my parents to this in December, but I am sure Jack and I will do it again.

Once we knocked out those three it was time for lunch, especially since Jack had not eaten almost any breakfast. He was pretty excited to be aeatign at Pizza Planet, which is a family tradition for us. I liked the new menu for the adult meals, I thought the Caesar salad was good, and I got the pepperoni pizza and the Mickey rice krispy treat. I was diappointed that they were one of the places that did not offer grapes for the kids meal, so Jack ended up with a cookie and applesauce, which I knew he wouldn't eat. And yes, I made him take off his shirt. He is a very messy pizza eater and I hadn't brought an extra shirt and didn't want to walk around with a pizza stained kid all day!
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

After lunch we made our way to the Honey I Shrunk The Kids playground. I love this place, but it also terrifies me! I know they have CM's posted at the exits (though none were paying attention when Jack and I walked by) but still... Jack at one point ducked into a cave, and I was not going to follow, but when he didn't come right back out, I started to panic a bit. I tried to figure out where he would have come out and forced myself to remain calm, and a few mintues later he showed up.

His favorite part was the Super Soaker that would randomly squirt. He would keep trying to stand exactly where the water would drop. He was so intent that he was often standing righton top of other kids. He also like the slides. He could have played in there for hours I'm sure, but after 15 or 20 minutes I was tired of worrying and it was getting warm so we headed out. I decided to try the Backstage tour rather than Lights! Motors! Action! because he had not been interested in sitting still at all. We ahd to wait a bit longer than I would have liked, but he seemed mildly entertained, and we got a lot of good views of the car show, so it kinda killed two brids with one stone!
ry%3D400

After we went to go see if we could find Lightning McQueen and Mater. We found them and got in line. I figured this was going to be AWESOME. Then when it was our turn Jack refused to get out of his stroller and started crying and throwing a fit. It was the wierdest thing! The photographers were very understanding, and tried to get a picture for us anyways... hopefully in December he will be more normal! He loves everything Cars, so I can't imagine why he freaked out like that, but oh well.
ry%3D400

It was finally after 2 so we headed back to TSM for our second ride. Even with FP I bet we waited 10 minutes, which obviously isn't bad but just shows how popular this ride is! Jack was little more relaxed and our scores showed some improvement!
ry%3D400

It was getting close to 3 so we headed towards the front to get to Starring Rolls so we could get one of the fabulous desserts I'm always reading about. We opted for the Butterfinger cupcake which was HUGE and delicious, and messy, and an apple juice. WE ate a bit and then went to line up for the parade. Well this parade sure is popular! We didn't get a great spot, but a couple people let us get in front of them, and then I put Jack on my shoulders so he could see. WE were right near the Toy Story float, so Jack could see all the characters and he would yell "Look mom, it's tatohead" or whoever. I was glad he enjoyed it and in December we will definitly stake out a better spot in advance because I think my shoulders are STILL recovering!
ry%3D400

After the parade we headed out. I decided we should hit DTD first rather than going to the hotel first, but I wanted Jack to have some relaxation time on the bus so I decided to get in line for a different resort bus and then switch buses at that resort fot DTD. When trying to decide, I remembered that we had been unsure wbout whether to stay at CSR or CBR in December, so I hopped in the CSR line so we could see it up close. That was a MISTAKE! We weren't in a hurry or anything, but we waited probably 15-20 mintues before a bus even got there! Then we got off at El Centro to get the DTD bus and waited at least another 10 mintues. Jack had a nice 45 mintues of quiet time, but I was glad we decided to rent a car in December after waiting so long! CSR did look nice, but I think our family will be happier at CBR. Oh but Jack did manage to cut his own eye on the bus. Every once in a while he will intentionally bang his head on something. Well this time he was resting hs face on the back of the seat. He looked up at me and then intentionall put his face down hard and managed to cut the corner of his eve on the metal strip onthe back of the seat! Only my son! He was fine after a minute, hopefully he learned to stop doing that!

ry%3D400

We FINALLY made it to DTD and the first order of business was a diaper change for Jack. AFter that we walked around a bit, went to Once Upon A Toy and got a box full of Mr. Potatohead parts! I never would have known about this if photographymommy517 hadn't written about it in her TR. In fact it was because of this place that I got Jack a Halloween Mr. Potatohead before our trip, so he could get used to the idea, and so I could see if he would be interested. This is the best souvenir we could have gotten! All the pieces are unique and SCREAM Disney, but it's something he will actually paly with, and it's cheap, just about $20 and you can fit ALOT in those boxes. In fact we ahd trouble filling ours because Jack is an "either/or" kind of kid. When we go to Target, sometimes I let him pick out a small toy, but he knows if he sees something else he wants, then he knows he has to put the other one back. Well he was using that line of thinking while picking out pieces, so if he had one hat, but saw another, he would put the first back. It's awesome, but it meant I had to go behind and fill in when he wasn't looking. He managed to end up with two boxes of popcorn, but oh well. In fact the lady said we could probably fit more if we wanted to, but I felt like we had plenty. Next up we went to World of Disney. I love this place but Jack was starting to lose it, so I knew we needed to get to dinner. I did find a t-shirt on our way out, so I bought it for the plane ride home!

We ate at Wolfgang Puck Express, which was an awesome use of a QS credit. I got spaghetti and meatballs and creme brulee and Jack got... Surprise, cheese pizza! This kid is nuts about pizza! My meal alone would have been $26 without the credit! We enjoyed a nice leisurely dinner, Jack ate one of my meatballs and then we headed back to the resort.
ry%3D400

ry%3D400

When we got back, I filled up my mug at the soda station, and we swung by the front desk to make sure there were no charges (I had been charging everything on my gift card). I ased about a late check out for the next day, and she said that was doen through housekeeping so I would have to call them from the room. Then we made our final (or so I thought) purchases, I got the set of 3 Halloween votive candle holders and we picke dup our glass angels from Epcot. Jack had wanted to go swimming, but by the time we got back it was after 6, and it was getting cooler outside, so I decided he could run through the Goofy fountain with his clothes on instead. He was freezing when I finally forced him to go back to the room, but he still didn't want to go! That kid and his water!

Finally we went back to the room and Jack took a warm bath. After bath he played with his Potatohead while I packed and got ready for the next morning. I called housekeeping and asked about a late check out and they said I could stay till 12, which was perfect! We went to bed before 10, after watching Stacy tell us the Must Do's of WDW about 12 times in a row!

You're making me want to make sure I go to Wolfgang Puck Express! I had to take it off my itinerary after the flight change. I'm glad your last day was good :) I also love the Halloween potato head! That's so cute!

Where exactly is wolfgang pucks? I always here such good things about it.

I am having the worst day (sinus problems!)...so when I logged on & started reading your Trip Report and saw you mentioned ME, I was thrilled!!!! :goodvibes Haha, funny how little things can make my day, right? lol

Anyway, I am soooo glad you were able to find the Mr. Potato Head parts after reading about it on my TR! Isn't that such a great deal? Luke loved filling up the box & kept putting the little hats on his own head. Did they have any Halloween or holiday parts? I just wondered because when we were there, there were tons of Star Wars parts (since it was SW weekend). I wasn't sure if they add new parts for Halloween & Christmas or not.

I love your report so far! Did you read about my huge "transportation disaster?" Don't feel badly at all...I know I felt so stupid when I first made my mistake, but it can get so confusing!

That Butterfinger cupcake at Starring Rolls looked delicious!!! I'll have to tell my husband or Luke to try it next trip. I'm not a huge fan of Butterfingers but they both love peanut butter so I'll let them try it! I got the chocolate croissant there & would definitely recommend it as well!!! Yum!

LOVED all the pictures from MNSSHP!!! I love the Halloween decor at Magic Kingdom! I've only seen it from others pictures but really hope to see it in person one day! Jack looks like he absolutely loved seeing Woody & Jessie! I'm so glad that he wasn't afraid of the characters.

On our day at DHS, I was sooo excited to see Lightning McQueen and Mater as well. Luke loves the movie Cars so I figured even though he was afraid of the other characters, he would love to see them. Well, I was completely wrong! He kept pointing to them while we were in line & would say "car" or "mater" but once we got up there, he completely freaked out! I think he was afraid of the engine noise or maybe he was just afraid because they seemed so big. All of my pictures have him crying while I'm holding him! Then after we walked away, he wanted to go back & see them again :confused3

Glad you were able to ride TSM! The Fast Pass time on that ride is always insane! I don't even know what it was the day we were at DHS but I know we didn't ride it and we were at DHS two days! Both lines were really, really long when we were there in June. Hopefully next trip! I loved your pictures from the que line...I definitely want to stand in line just to see the neat toys!

How did you like Pop Century? It seems like you had the perfect location, so what are your tips? Just wondering because I'm thinking about staying there next trip! I was originally thinking Port Orleans but I think Luke would really love the decor at Pop! Your pics of the resort are great!

Can't wait to read more!!!!

Where exactly is wolfgang pucks? I always here such good things about it.

If you come in where the buses drop you off at the Marketplace (the farthest entrance on the marketplace side, byt Design a Tee, it's right by the Christmas store, they share a building. I had a tiny bit of trouble finding it because it's kind of tucked in the back/side of the building. It was delicious, and totally worth it on the dining plan, but I doubt I would ever pay $16 for spaghetti and meatballs at a "quick service" type restaurant!

I didn't see any Halloween parts, which now that I think about it really surprises me... I did see a couple Christmas ones, a Santa hat with Mickey ears and a Christmas tree, but Jack wasn't interested. I am thinking about trying to order them before our December trip. I also saw a Dumbo for Mr. Potato Head to ride in and it was only like $6 I think.

I love your report so far! Did you read about my huge "transportation disaster?" Don't feel badly at all...I know I felt so stupid when I first made my mistake, but it can get so confusing!

I just wasn't thinking. I was too focused on the rain and on whether we were really up to hanging out for the party if it kept up... but it is a mistake I will onlymake once!

I was afraid they would be all out of yummy stuff, and it was looking kind of bare, but they had the Butterfinger and the chocolate peanut butter ones... A chocolate croissant would be the perfect DHS breakfast now that I think about it... :lmao:

I really wish weather had been better so I could have taken more pics througout the afternoon. I LOVED the decor, but I was surprised none of the other parks decorated. Epcot was all done up for F&W though. Jack did love the characters this time, but maybe it helped that Buzz was the first one he met.

On our day at DHS, I was sooo excited to see Lightning McQueen and Mater as well. Luke loves the movie Cars so I figured even though he was afraid of the other characters, he would love to see them. Maybe it was the noise! That's exactly what happened with Jack. So wierd!

I thought that our 50 minute wait wasn't too bad. I think a 20 minute wait would be ideal, to see all the stuff in the line, but not have to wait too long. Any shorter and you would miss details!

How did you like Pop Century? It seems like you had the perfect location, so what are your tips? Just wondering because I'm thinking about staying there next trip! I was originally thinking Port Orleans but I think Luke would really love the decor at Pop! Your pics of the resort are great!

I liked Pop. I will admit it was a bit nosier than I would have liked, (as in, you can hear the neighbors toilet flush) but everything else was perfect for us, and we never really heard our neighbors talking so either they were the quiet types, or it's just the plumming that causes the noise to carry. I picked my location very carefully based on what I wanted (lower floor, close to bus stops, close to pools etc.) I studied maps and then I found a copy of a letter that jenseib has used when faxing her requests on the Pop thread, so I formatted mine like hers, and faxed it in about 5 days prior to arrival. I've read that not all places accept these faxes anymore, but let's just say, I gave them 3 examples of the perfect room for me, and I got one of those, so they had to be paying attention (I know how OCD that sounds, to narrow down 2800 rooms or something down to 3, but I am a very specific person, and working in hotels, I know it helps to have an example!) Jack's favorite thing was the Goofy fountain and the Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. I am sure he would have loved the Toy Stroy section at ASMovies even more, but if (when:rotfl:) we go back next fall, we will go back to Pop.

Can't wait to read more!!!!

I will post our last day tomorrow hopefully!

Great. Thanks. I know where the Christmas store is, so I should be able to find it.

Sorry to leave everyone hanging for so long, but writing about the last day is no fun!

Having already secured a 12 pm check out, I knew we had enough time to eat breakfast, swim, and shower before we left on our ME trip back to the airport. We got a really good nights sleep this night (which would prove to be important as the day wore on) and eventually we both woke up and got dressed in our swim clothes. We rolled on over to the food court, and I noticed a sign that said shoes and shirts were required... which I hadn't noticed before and of course, Jack was shirtless, since we were going swimming. I figured we'd just get in and out quickly, and hopefully no one would mind. We got in line and got a Mickey waffle meal for Jack and a french toast meal for me. I got milk, apple juice and OJ for our beverages, and then got some coffee in my refillable mug. We went to eat outside to enjoy the beautiful Florida sunshine, and also so no one would throw a fit since Jack wasn't properly dressed (BTW no one even looked at us twice).

Jack did not liek his waffle at all, though he did eat sausage patties and bacon and some of my french toast, so I in turn are his waffle, and some of his applesauce. He also refused to drink more than 3 sips of milk. I didn't force the issue. After we cleared up our tray, we walked over to the pool and found Jack a lifejacket. I am so glad they have these, they work better than swimmies and he has so much more freedom!

ry%3D400

We got in, despite it being less than the ideal warm temp, and swam for maybe 15 minutes, (probably more like 10) before Jack decided he's rather go back to the Goofy fountain. This was fine with me as it didn't require my participation, so I could sit on the bench and finish my coffee. And of course take MORE pictures of Jack and his new happy place!

After we were done with Goofy, we stopped by the playground on our way back to our room.

We saw another little friend!

ry%3D400

Finally we headed back to the room to shower, change, and pack our swim stuff. We took our luggage to bag check and then went back for our stroller and carryon. Jack was distaught at giving up our luggage to the bag check guys, but he eventually got over it. We were out of the room by 11:59 am!

This left us with time to walk around the resort and take pics...

Goodbye TatoHeads! See ya next time (more on that later)

ry%3D400

We also took some pics of other people's decorative windows...

ry%3D400

(next time we will do better with our window)

And pics of Jack's favorite, the elephant!

ry%3D400

Then we went back to the gift shop and made a few impulse buys... I got little keychains for our cash drawers at work (they were really cute, but did not hold up at all), a BBQ set for my dad (this would prove to be a mistake), and some Mickey pasta. We also went and used our last 2 snack credits for grapes and gummies on a stick that were several Pixar characters. Jack loved it!

ry%3D400

After cramming all this in, we are finally ready to board the ME... except I am not sure I have the right paperwork! In my rush to get everything packed and minimize carryon items... I had neglected to look at what we needed. Thankfully I found the right papers and we were all set to say goodbye... for now!

Jack saying goodbye to Pop!

Our carryon items (or so I thought)

cC

Once we got to MCO I discovered that our flight was delayed. Since we had so much time on our hands, I decided we should sit down to a decent lunch, so we headed to Macaroni Grill, which is one of my favorite restaurants of all time! Jack was less than enthusiastic and was quite a pill throughout our meal, and barely ate anything. After lunch I decided to go ahead and go through security before calling my parents. And now begins the drama...

So on our way to WDW, I had packed some glo bracelets and stuff in my carryon. I had extras in our luggage in case they said we couldn't travel with them (since they cotain liquid) but we had no problems. So I, being silly, decided to push the envelope a bit, and figured that the BBQ set I got my dad last minute (that had a bottle of BBQ sauce in it) would be fine. After all, it was in a box, sealed, and it was from Disney for cryin out loud. Well, let's just say I didn't get away with it. Which is entirely my own fault, I understand that, but the guy was a huge jerk about it. He asked if I wanted to just throw it away but I felt like being difficult so I said no, I'd go back and check it. So the guy personally escoreted me out. We had so much time before our flight I wasn't worried, so we went back to the SW desk. Then they said they couldn't check it in the shopping bag. So I dumped out Jack's backpack and packed it in there with my sweatshirt for cusioning. Then I figured I was tired of dealing with Jack's stroller, so we checked that too! Then we made our way back through security. I was pretty stressed at this point, just from the back and forth, and I had about 12 missed calls, from my parents, and evidently SW updating me on the status of my flight.

Finally we made it to our gate and Jack ran around a bit. Then we lined up and boarded. Then we pulled away from the gate. Then we pulled back in because something was wrong! Finally we took off, I believe about an hour late. Jack was pretty good on the flight, he went potty once in the airplane bathroom, but it was hard for him, all the sitting still. Nex time I am bringing our travel DVD player for sure! We finally made it and waited for our luggage onthe other end. My mom wasn't there yet, so I got concerned since Jack was loose with no stroller. Luckily the very first thing off the plane was his stroller! Then I just had to get my suitcase, backpack, Jack's backpack, and his suitcase off the luggage thing... except his suitcase hadn't made it! When we were sure there was no more luggage coming, I went into the office and they informed me that his bag had been put on a plane to Rhode Island instead... They were telling me about my options for getting it back the next day, talking about delivering it to my house and when it owuldbe there. Then she said or you could come get it, to whiich I was about to say no freaking way am I hauling it back to the airport when it's not my fault it's lost. Before I could get that point across, she added "... and get a $50 voucher" SOLD! I gladly agreed to swing by the next day after 12 pm to retrieve it! Finally we made it to the car with the luggage and home to our house where we had 7 people patiently waiting for us to join them for dinner!

As I said in my previous post, Jack was saying bye to the Tatoheads... for now! After much deliberation and soul searching, thinking over the trip and deciding if it was worth it or not, I have decided that I am 90% sure we will be going back next year!

ry%3D400

I really enjoy having just me and Jack time, and there are few vacations you can take with small children where everyone is entertained equally. I would say that cruising and Disney are really the only options, and we are doing a cruise in May. Plus I really loved the little bit of Halloween we got to see, and the MNSSHP was a total blast, so I can imagine it will be even better if it's not raining, we are not tired and sick, and we can go right at 4 to get even more time at MK. Also it's very possible both of us will have earned free fligths on SW by then, so that would help a lot with cutting down costs!

Things I would do differently:
*Stay for 4 nights~ I want to be able to do all 4 parks this time
*Leave earlier on our last day~ Dragging it out didn't work so well for us
*Go later in October~ My vacation time doesn't roll over till 10/20
*Rent a stroller~ Traveling by myself and having to juggle stroller, backpack and boy was just too much
*Wait until we get there to buy MNSSHP tix~ in case of bad weather!
*Decorate our window more~Ours was an afterthought this time!
*Bring travel DVD player~ It makes life so much easier!
*Make rope drop at DHS~ This way we can ride TSM without waiting an hour and get a better timed FP!
*See Fantasmic~ I thought about it last time, but didn't have the energy to go back to DHS
*Utilize photopass more~ I was so disappointed that I don't have more pics of me and Jack (where he's not crying), and I hated paying $14.95 for the one we did get!

Things I will do the same:
*MK/MNSSHP on arrival day~ Saves on a 4th park ticket, and is enough time for us
*Stay at Pop~ I will probably request the same room even, it was perfect for us
*Free dining~ it's the only way to make it really affordable for us, especially since Jack will be 3. Dates for FD have not been extended as far as we need them so I am hoping for a bounceback when we go in December. If that's not available, we will book for the last day of FD (9/29/11) and then change it if possible later
*Schedule one sit down OOP table service meal~ It seems necessary, and it's affordable if it's just one.
*I want to keep it just me and Jack.~ It's our quality time!

Departure day is a such a sad day. I'm glad you get to go again! :)

It sounds like the trip home was a little rough. I can understand the TSA agent enforcing policy, but he doesn't have to be rude about it!

Sounds like a great trip, but after being a single mom for several years myself, I know how hard it can be. I had two to juggle around.
I'm the opposite of you with the stroller though. I love having it at the airport. It makes it easier to keep her strapped down while I can drag everything else with us. And if she walks (and she is bigger though) I can pile stuff in the seat and she carries her own suitcase.

Yay for another trip planned already! :yay: Do you know what day you'll be arriving yet? We're arriving 10/31/11 and staying for ten days. :)

But yeah, departure day is such a sad day :( I didn't want to leave yesterday

I WANT to go the last week of October, but free dining has only been extended through Sept 29th. If I can get a boucne back for October when I am there in December, but if there isn't one, I will book for 9/29 (last day of free dining) while I am there, since the last booking date is 12/20. I can't afford to go without free dining, especially since Jack will be 3 and will actually cost money :scared:

You guys really were on the go. Jack is so stinking cute!

With the MK bus top and TTC, I think only buses are allowed to drop you off up at the gate. I don't think Taxi's are allowed to, but I could be wrong. You must've taken the resort monrail, since you had all those stops. We once rode it around, just for fun and it sat at the Comtepory forever!
So glad the halloween party worked out well for you though.

WE love Pop too. It's alot of fun for little ones.

I was actually wondering where you found the little girl in that picture's Mary Poppins costume???

LOL! Do you mean where did I get the dress? The litttle girl is mine! :lmao:

The dress is a mixture of several things. We ordered the actaul dress through her dance studio then added bows. The shirt under it is a dress shirt, and the hat is an old easter hat that I added tulle too. The boots I got online and the parasol from Michaels.
