I have a duck in my flower bed with 9 eggs. How long does it take before they hatch? My kids love to watch it everday. Also I noticed there are more eggs each day. There were 6 on tuesday 8 yesterday and 9 today. Is that common??

We had a pair of mallards build a nest in a bush right next to our driveway. Since I parked my car right there, I always had a good view of the nest, and was really careful. I ended up parking at the end of the driveway, since I was afraid I would startle the mom into flying away, and maybe right into my car.
Anyway.....DH called the ag office, and he was told that the mother will lay an egg or two, every day or few days until she has about 8-12, and then will sit on the whole pile of them. They all hatch the same day too.........remarkable. Takes about 3 weeks to hatch. We missed the actual hatching, though, and we were checking every day towards the end. ANd then there were just empty shells. As soon as they are hatched, she will parade them to the nearest water. Do you have a pond in the area? We do, and when we realized they were gone, we went to the pond, and they were out there swimming......I assume that it was them, since we don't usually see mallards around here.

yeah we have a pond real close to us. She has been sitting there the past 2 days now where before she would be gone all day. We are feeding her bread and water so she don't have to leave and look for food cause we have cats that roam around.

Please go get some food made for ducks... bread can make them sick (by gettting stuck and fermenting) or even build up causing them to suffocate.

How neat. Let us know when the ducklings hatch?

We've had a Mom and Dad duck land in our pool every March for the past 8 years. Daisy and Donald, they would live in our pool cover until we took it off. They only had babies once that we saw. This year they didn't come because we got a new safety cover and there was no pond for them to land in! My neighbor swears they are over in her yard now. We miss watching them. You may find them coming year after year. Ditto on the duck food.

I hope you do get to see them. My kids (and me too of course) were really disappointed that they were eggs one day, and gone the next. But at least I know they made it to the pond, since she had to cross the street with them, and cut across a few yards. And I know there are cats around, but not just then I guess.
