Mom & Son Heading to Food & Wine! Nov 9th - 13th! 12/2-Y&Y, MVMCP & Complete!

Welcome back!! I can't wait for you to get started with your reviews and to see how your plans changed!

Ok. lets get started! We arrived late Friday night and rode the ME to the AllStar Music resort. We were very tired and just wanted to get to our room. At check-in I am told that there is no balance due. What? This is a room only reservation and I know that I owe 3 nights. Turns out that they applied someone else's payment to our room. The guy tells me that they can't reverse the charge until they talk to the person even though he confirmed that she is staying at the resort and still has a balance on her account. He then tells me that if this person didn't intend to pay for our room they will charge the balance to my credit card on file. Ok, no ... I want to pay with a gift card. I ask him if he can just take the payment so that when her charge is reversed we will be paid and he tells me no. Ok, its too late to argue, I will talk to a manager in the morning. Off we go to probably the farthest building they could have put us in. *sigh* My bad, I didn't do my research and didn't request a room.

Room was Ok, nothing special We missed Pop. I know it is a value, but the room seemed rundown. TV didn't work that first night but again, we didn't care. We just wanted to get some sleep go we could get up bright and early for our first day of food & wine!

Saturday morning we got up showered and headed to the buses. We just missed an EPCOT bus and had to wait about 20 minutes for the next one. Not a problem. Met a nice family from Texas and chatted in line.

Now as a family used to going to WDW in August, let me tell you about the weather. Oh my! Perfect just doesn't describe it. Nice breeze, mid to high 70's. We were in heaven!

DisneyNovember2012001.jpg

Arrived at EPCOT and went to Festival Center to try some:

DisneyNovember2012005.jpg

Drinking chocolate! This was good but oh, so rich. Definitely like drinking a melted candy bar. We would not have been able to drink more than that cup.

Also checked out the chocolate sculptures ...

DisneyNovember2012003.jpg

DisneyNovember2012002.jpg

These were really cool. Last stop was the Chase lounge ...

DisneyNovember2012004.jpg

Nice place to chillax for a bit. We then headed over to the WS passing the cranberry bog on the way ...

DisneyNovember2012006.jpg

DisneyNovember2012007.jpg

DisneyNovember2012008.jpg

This was really neat to see. Jay's parents have a house on the Cape near a real bog so this caused a neat memory for us.

Next up ... the food!

First stop for us was

DisneyNovember2012009.jpg

Where we had

DisneyNovember2012010.jpg

Kalua Pork Slider with Sweet and Sour Dole Pineapple Chutney and Spicey Mayonnaise

This was delicious! I loved the chutney. Perfect blend of sweet, smokey and spicey. We rated this a 9.5 on our scale up to 10. Didn't get a perfect 10 because of the bread to meat ratio. A bit too much bread.

Next stop,

DisneyNovember2012011.jpg

Where we had

DisneyNovember2012012.jpg

Griddled Greek Cheese with Pistachios and Honey.

We loved this! Definitely a 10 for us. Salty cheese and sweet honey. Perfect. We have blue cheese honey toast for a snack at home so this was really good for us.

Also had the

DisneyNovember2012013.jpg

Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki

We rated this an 8. DS liked it a bit better than I did. Too much oregano in the tzatziki for me. Chicken was perfectly cooked and tender though.

Next stop was the one we were most looking forward to ....

DisneyNovember2012015.jpg

Where we tried

DisneyNovember2012014.jpg

Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup, Chicken Chipotle Sausage with Sweet Corn Polenta and Onion Jam and "Le Cellier" Wild Mushroom Beef Filet Mignon with Truffle Butter Sauce

O M G! All of these got a 10 from us. The steak was perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth tender. The sausage has a nice spice that went perfect with the polenta and the soup was nice rich and creamy. We have had all of these foods at Le Cellier and thought they were even better as bite sized morsels of yumminess!

More day one coming up!

Next up,

DisneyNovember2012016.jpg

For something sweet ...

DisneyNovember2012017.jpg

Warm Chocolate Lava Cake with Baileys Ganache

This was heavenly. A 9 from us. Very rich but we both wished that we had gotten our own instead of sharing. Small portion for sure.

I skipped the next booth ...

DisneyNovember2012019.jpg

But Andrew wanted to try ...

DisneyNovember2012018.jpg

Lamb Meatball with Spicy Tomato Chutney

He rated this a 4 and the worst thing he had a F&W. He didn't care for the tomato chutney at all.

Next up ...

DisneyNovember2012020.jpg

Where we tried

DisneyNovember2012022.jpg

Beef Rendang with Jasmine Rice and

DisneyNovember2012021.jpg

Seared Mahi Mahi with Jasmine Rice and Singa Sauce

The beef was super tender but oh so spicy! WOW! We like some spice to our food but this was hot, hot HOT. Andrew ate most of it and ended up eating most of the rice with both meals to cool off his palette.

The mahi mahi was tasty, nothing special but tasty. We rated both of these a 7.

Next was a non F&W treat, the pumpkin funnel cake

DisneyNovember2012023.jpg

This was really good! Hot,moist and very tasty. Andrew did not want the ice cream but it was really nice without it.

It was started to get really crowded so we decided to have one last taste and then cut out ...

DisneyNovember2012026.jpg

DisneyNovember2012025.jpg

Kielbasa with Potato Pierogie with Caramelized Onions and Sour Cream

I had most of this and it was quite good. I gave it an 8.

I loved how the miniature train village was also having a F&W

DisneyNovember2012030.jpg

DisneyNovember2012029.jpg

All in all we thought our first experience with F&W was very successful. Crowds were light until about 1:00 when it really got crazy. We made it half way around and decided to change our Sunday plans so we could come back again right at opening. We had planned to go to DTD on Sunday so we decided to head there. We took the bus to POP and I remembered that there was a snack that I wanted to try there ...

DisneyNovember2012031.jpg

The King Cupcake. Chocolate cupcake with banana filling, peanut butter frosting and candied bacon. This was a really good cupcake. The frosting was whipped and very light, not the usual heavy Disney frosting. Cupcake was nice and moist. The bacon didn't really add much flavor though.

Then we were off to DTD. Dumb move on my part! I didn't realize what the Festival of the Masters was and it was PACKED. You really couldn't move without hitting someone. We walked thru without stopping anywhere and got back on the bus to DHS.

Our only real plan at DHS was the Osborne Lights. I really wanted to be there when they turned them on. It was about 5ish so we went over to claim a spot and search for a snack.

Andrew had the candied pecans ...

DisneyNovember2012032.jpg

I had to get the Mickey popcorn bucket ...

DisneyNovember2012034.jpg

And we decided to try the gingerbread hot chocolate

DisneyNovember2012035.jpg

I didn't try the pecans but Andrew loved them. The popcorn as usual was perfectly salty and delicious. The hot chocolate was just ick. I tried to like it, I really did. It was not good and we ended up giving most of it to a plant. ;)

We saw the Osborne Lights during our Christmas trip in 2009 and I was feeling blessed that they started this weekend. They were just as amazing as I remembered. Pictures really do not do them justice but here are a few ...

DisneyNovember2012055.jpg

DisneyNovember2012050.jpg

DisneyNovember2012058.jpg

We spent a little over an hour wandering the lights. Didn't find the cat though. Then we were off to the Contemporary for dinner at California Grille!

Dinner Saturday night was at California Grill. I tried for over a month to get this reservation. Flying Fish was our backup plan and that would have been fine but I was thrilled a few days before our trip when the ADR for Cali popped up! :goodvibes

Here's the menu ...

DisneyNovember2012063.jpg

We knew we wanted to try one of the sushi selections. Because of that we made the decision to just get several appetizers.

First though was the bread & sea-salted butter. I love the bread here. I like a super crusty crunchy bread so for me, this is perfect.

DisneyNovember2012064.jpg

We decided to have the Triple Cheese flatbread . . . Pecorino, Asiago, and Provolone, Sun-dried Tomato, Arugula Pesto

DisneyNovember2012066.jpg

This was tasty but my least favorite of the items we tried. I enjoyed it but the other things were just that much better.

For our sushi, we decided on the “Dragon Roll” . . . Spicy and Tataki Tuna, Shrimp Tempura, Bell Pepper, Avocado, Chili-Soy Glaze

DisneyNovember2012065.jpg

This was simply amazing. We don't generally like shrimp but together with every thing else in the roll we loved it! Both of us declared it our favorite food item of the trip.

For our "entrees" we shared two more appetizers,

Handmade Potato Gnocchi . . . Wild Mushrooms, Edamame, Smoked Pork, Organic Soft-poached Egg

DisneyNovember2012067.jpg

and the Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli . . . Sun-dried Tomatoes, Pesto, Shiitake Mushrooms, Basil

DisneyNovember2012068.jpg

Both were very good. We have had the Ravioli before and it did not disappoint this time. The Gnocchi was heavenly though. The egg melted in so perfectly with the smokey pork and the mushrooms. Delicious.

I had earl grey tea

DisneyNovember2012069.jpg

and we shared a dessert ... Caramel Corn Crème Brûlée - Zellwood Sweet Corn Custard, Salted Caramel Swirl Ice Cream, and Caramel Corn Brittle

DisneyNovember2012070.jpg

This was A-MA-ZING. One of my favorite all time Disney desserts. The creme brulee was so perfect. The ice cream has a bit of a 'icy' texture. It would have been a bit better if it was smooth, but the taste was still really good. And the brittle was just perfect.

Our original plan was to head into the MK for EMH but that was when we planned to sleep in on Sunday. Now that we decided to get up early and head back to F&W we just took a cab back to the AllStars.

All in all a very magical day for me. The weather was perfect. I was there with my son on a bonus trip to F&W and we got to see some of the wonderful Christmas decorations. As a side note, we did not do one ride or traditional "Disney" thing. And yet the day was just about perfect.

Welcome back! I've seen some of your pics on jabead's live updates thread, and now I'm looking forward to hearing all about your trip! I hope your trip was magical! G

Thank you! Our trip was absolutely perfect ... definitely magical!

Joining in !!! Looking forward to reading !!

Welcome!

Welcome back!! I can't wait for you to get started with your reviews and to see how your plans changed!

We changed about about everything and it was really nice. I have never felt a slave to the dining plan before but I have to admit that not having too many set plans was really nice.

Joining in! :flower3:

Welcome!

Oh that cupcake looks amazing! :worship: And I agree, the rendang was really spicy! ::yes::

It really was worth the bus ride! We are planning to stay at Art of Animation in March and will definitely try to get over to Pop for another one.

Great start so far! Loved seeing the preview pics you sent in on the "live report" thread :thumbsup2

We are headed to F&W in Oct :cool1: Will be our first time visiting F&W and we cant wait!

Great reviews so far. That cupcake looks so good!

Thank you! It was really good! Wish I had one for breakfast! :)

F&W was even better than I had thought it would be. We really had a great time. I hope to get back next year with DH!

Oh my goodness, I can't believe that my beloved filet & cheese soup at LC are available at the F&W!! :worship: It really looks and sounds like you had a fantastic time and fantastic food. I went without a dining plan on our last trip and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. I do like the dining plan but it's also nice to wing it and just order whatever, whenever without having to worry about credits.

Your meal of appetizers at CG looks just perfect! What a great idea!

I am sorry for the delay ... I have been battling the flu. Better now than a couple of weeks ago! :thumbsup2

So Sunday morning we were up early again to head back to EPCOT for F&W.

First stop was Mexico for

DisneyNovember2012071.jpg

Taco de Filete

This was delicious. I wish we had a chance to get more than one of these. We rated it an 8

Then we were off to Scandinavia for

DisneyNovember2012072.jpg

Swedish Meatballs with Lingonberries and Rice Pudding with Berries

Andrew doesn't like rice pudding so that was all mine and it was delicious! Loved the strawberries with the custard. I gave this a 9.

The meatballs were just Ok. Not bad, not great. A 6 from us.

Next up was China for

DisneyNovember2012073.jpg

Mongolian Beef in a steamed bun, Pork Potstickers and Mango Tapioca Pudding.

All were good. We gave the beef a 7 and the other two items 8's. Again, Andrew didn't have any of the tapioca. I loved it but it wasn't quite as good as the rice!

Then we were off to South Africa for

DisneyNovember2012074.jpg

Seared Filet of Beef with Smashed Sweet Potatos and Spinach and Paneer Cheese Pocket.

We both really like the sweet potatoes and found the meat to be to be tough. Because of the sweet potatoes we gave this it a 7.

The pocket is the one thing we most differed on. Andrew really liked it and gave it a 8. I didn't love it and only gave it a 5.

Next was the Cheese booth

DisneyNovember2012075.jpg

Cheese fondue with sourdough bread and the artistan cheese selection which was a cheddar, goat and blue

We really enjoyed both of these. The fondue got a 10 and the cheese plate a 9.

We debated on skipping Germany because we eat bratwurst every trip. We had a nice shady bench though and decided to keep it a bit longer by trying

DisneyNovember2012076.jpg

Roast bratwurst in a pretzel roll and Schinken Nudel (Pasta Gratin with ham and cheese)

We were so glad we didn't skip this one. We absolutely loved the Schinken Nudel. To us it tasted more like an eggy souflee. Definite 10. The bratwurst got an 8.

Walking by we noticed that the town was dealing with a train accident

DisneyNovember2012077.jpg

Maybe because of the attack of the lizard!

DisneyNovember2012079.jpg

Does anyone know where these guys go? In August you have to avoid stepping on them and this trip we only saw two the whole weekend. :confused3

Andrew now wanted something sweet and got a coffee gelato

DisneyNovember2012081.jpg

He had one in August and loved it so had to have another one this trip.

I wanted to try the offerings in Italy

DisneyNovember2012080.jpg

Ravioli Formaggio and Sweet Italian Sausage with Peppers

The ravioli was so disappointing. Worst thing of the Festival for me. It just had no flavor at all. Very flat. A 3. The sausage was a bit better but the bread ended up super soggy. We have the sausage and veggies and threw out the bread and most of the ravioli. Sausage got a 6.

Last stop for us was Japan

DisneyNovember2012082.jpg

Karage Hand Roll - Crispy Chicken Breat with Sushi Rice and Spicy Mayonnaise.

This was a great way to end our first F&W experience. A definite 9.

It was very crowded at this point so we decided to head over to the MK.

A bit later we were hungry and stopped at Pinocchios to try the pepperoni flatbread and an iced tea

DisneyNovember2012083.jpg

This was actually fairly tasty for what it is. Better than most WDW pizza but no where near the quality of restaurant flatbreads.

It hit the spot though.

Next up, new Fantasyland preview!

Be careful with those APs....:rotfl: I'm amazed at how much use I was able to get out of them! But how wonderful that you're able to get in so much quality time with your son before he leaves for college.

And what better way that Food and Wine? I went this year and loved it. It was like a super, amped up awesome version of World Showcase.

We had a wonderful meal at Cali Grill, as well. Our waiter was superb, as was the food. And, much like you, it was an ADR I had stalked and it finally came up not long before out trip! :goodvibes

Yes, it was actually quite nice not dealing with credits. I am looking forward to our trip next August using TIW and no dining plan. I did book the DP for our quick March trip because $$ will be tight and I need the trip prepaid. No deluxe though, just the regular.

I know! The APs are killing me! Just the thought that I can go whenever I can get there. I don't think we will be going any more than our March and August trip but I s'pose you never know! ;)

Yes, super amped up awesome about sums it up. The atmosphere was so fun. We met some awesome people. It was really great. We we there early though, not at night when people had been drinking all day. Not sure if that changed anything.

Loved reading your reviews. Thanks! We were there for FW. But didn't try some of the food you did. Next year!! :goodvibes
