This hasn't happened to us yet, but it very well could. DS tends to take his out and place it on the top of the toilet (back part) before getting in the shower. And the lid is usually up.

I'm really surprised by the number of people who would get a new $200 retainer instead of cleaning the dropped one. You guys must be made of money.

Nah, I'm not surprised at all. The DIS is just full of germophobes. Look at some of the other threads for the great lengths some folks go to "protect" themselves and their families from germs and viruses .

On the morning of her yearly retainer check, DD19 popped her retainer out of her mouth with her tongue just as she flushed. Down it went! We got to pay for a new retainer and a plumber!

Well, we soaked it all day in denture cleaner. Then I scrubbed it with a toothbrush and toothpaste and rinsed it under hot water. He wore it all night and this morning he's still alive and feeling fine! He's also learned not to take out his retainer until after he's flushed and closed the lid!

Good to hear he is fine.

And actually, there are probably MORE bacteria in the mouth than in the toilet.
