Our teenage daughter (16) and I decided to go it alone to HHI this year since Dad has started a new business and no vacations for him for awhile. We have been to WDW every year since she was two and DD was in the mood to try something different. She suggested HHI where we could relax and play some golf together. I was abit fearful she would be bored after a few days but Id always wanted to try Hilton Head so readily agreed. After all, if she didnt like it, it was her idea right?
Day 1- Saturday 17th
We left Seattle at 7 am and arrived Savannah at 4:30. I had rented a full size at National for the week so we loaded up the suitcases and golf clubs and headed for the Fairfield Inn in Bluffton. This is a fairly new hotel with a nice staff and clean rooms. And to my teens delight, there was internet access on a computer in the lobby where she parked herself until dinner checking Myspace. We drove over to a little strip mall area where we had our choice of Mexican, Chinese or sub sandwiches. We chose Chinese and had the buffet which was really nice for only $9.00 each. DH would be proud!
We then found the local Walmart and looked for beach umbrellas and chairs. Nothing there but we did pick up our bottled water and pop. The next morning they had a very nice complimentary breakfast and DD had to take a packet of Quaker Oat Grits to show her friends back in Seattle. We still arent sure what grits are.
Day 2 Sunday 18th
We left the Fairfield Inn about 11:00 and arrived at Disneys HHI about 11:45. There is a lot of road construction on 278 which has slowed down traffic considerably. A very nice CM welcomed us home and loaded us down with info on the area. She said our room should be ready around 2:00 so we decided to walk around the resort and explore abit. We were both impressed at how nice the theming is and how close the resort is to the marsh. We drove over to check out the beach house and walked along the beach which is so pristine and white.
Nothing like our grey, rocky Washington beaches! We then stopped at Piggly Wiggly to get groceries and decided to box up salads from their very nice salad bar for lunch. We got back to the resort at 2:00 and were assigned a 1 bedroom (room 1138) in the main lodge house. This was a third floor non smoking room with a great view of the marsh. Im glad we had the main building since we were hauling suitcases and golf bags and could use the elevator. We also liked the under building parking to keep the car cool. DD quickly unpacked and wanted to go to the beach. We hit the beach for awhile and then spent more time at the pool at the beach house. Very nice pool and lots of teens there! She quickly met some kids that she saw often during the week. She never did the teen activities that Disney posted but there were lots of teens at the pool and beach all week.
We had dinner that night at the Boathouse II. We really like the outdoor dining and live music. We split a calamari appetizer and a crabcakes entrée
and they were both very good. Very nice waiter but I forgot to ask for my 10% DVC discount. Something I will continue to forget to ask for all week!
I had to call from dinner to get our tee times for the next day. We used the Last Minute Tee times service to get discounted tee times and booked Robbers Row for 10:00 the next day. We could have played earlier but I have a teen who makes sleeping -in a lifestyle so went with the flow. After dinner we decided to stop at the HHI Walmart and found lots of beach umbrellas and chairs. We got back to the resort and walked over to the marina to check out the shops. Very nice upscale shops and restaurants that we might want to try later. Finally back to the room where I quickly fell asleep to the sound of my teen texting the milieu back in Seattle.
