Modifying reservations within 30 days to use other points

Can you modify a reservation within 30 days (same days/same length of trip/same room) to use a different one of your contracts without generating holding points? Just curious before I do something dumb. Thanks!

I’m pretty sure the points you free up will be put in holding, but I do not have experience here.

I know it’s possible to apply holding points to an existing reservation in between the 31-60 day window. That’s a convenient way to use them up - one of the many advantages to visiting WDW more than once a year! Though there are a few scenarios that won’t work, eg - holding points on a newer resale can’t be applied to an upcoming RIV reservations because of the restrictions.

You can not. Any changes 30 days or less result in holding, just like a cancel will.

And, moving those holding points to a different reservation that is more than 31 days doesn’t change that status.

Those points freed during the cancellation would still be in holding but if you use them with another reservation, then you won't have any holding points to worry about. Just make sure you understand the status of the points you free when you modify the other reservation - were they borrowed for example?

Good points! I took another route to free up more VDH points for our 2027 visit. This was too complex for me since my second 2026 visit (to HHI, where I do not own) is inexplicably locked and I have to get member services to modify it and they are always confused by it.

Just to clarify for other…if you use holding in a different reservation, and that reservation is canceled, no matter how far out, those original holding points will be returned in holding status still…
