Modifying Existing Reservations for discounts

I have a split stay booked in January and am preparing for what to do if a discount is offered. What is the best way to take advantage of the discount should one be announced? Change online, change over the phone?

Right now we have 1 night at AOC and 7 at WL. (We had booked WL first then flights came out and it was cheaper to go down a day earlier and get a room for one night).
Most important is not loosing FP, ADRs, or the WL reservation but if I could I'd change it to 3 nights AOC and 5 at WL.

So you won't be modifying a reservation, you'll be canceling and rebooking under the promotion. That can be accomplished either online or in person. There's a bit of a grace period before FP and ADR's are dropped so as long as your stays are all still onsite those will remain intact.

My understanding is that if you end up with a new reservation number, you will receive an email letting you know that you have X amount of days to provide them with the new reservation number before anything is canceled out.

ADRs are never dropped no matter what you do with a reservation. One would need to manually cancel each one to make them go away.

An on site reservation only opens the “+10” window to book but ADRs otherwise aren’t tied to resort reservations in any way.

Thanks all.
This worries me:

I guess there is a chance we could cancel and not be able to rebook? Is that any more likely doing it online vs on the phone?

You could hook the package, then cancel the room-only.

Room only. We'll get tickets later, once [if] the discount details come out.

I know why a PP phrased it the way they did, but when you modify an existing room only reservation (either by adding a discount, changing dates, changing resorts, etc), you are in no risk of losing the reservation - you keep the same reservation number and there is no risk to anything. Modifications can be done online (click the "Change Reservation" link next to your reservation under "My Plans" under "My Disney Experience" on the website) or via phone. Online is often quite simple - I modify reservation dates, resorts, room categories, and discounts all the time (obviously subject to availability).

Yes, what GADisneyDad14 said! OP, you can modify your reservation online. If you start the modification process, but what you would like to modify to isn't available (your new dates aren't available, discount isn't available, etc.), you can simply leave the modification process and keep your current reservation as is. You can also keep checking back to see if what you would like becomes available as inventory changes constantly. I have a reservations for both November and December and I'm still poking around every day (especially for the November one!) to see if discount inventory changes at all!
