Model dies from anorexia

I saw that. My sister almost died from anorexia a few years ago. Such a shame.

It's so sad, but unfortunately, not suprising. With the pressure that these girls are under to maintain unrealistic weights it was only a matter of time before one of them dies as a result of it.

That is very sad.

I hope this doesn't become another thread making fun of people for their thinness. Loads of people have health problems and die from being overweight, too.

It is all unhealthy, I know. I just don't like those threads where people judge others based on their weight. Those folks know they are too thin or too fat and don't need everyone else making fun of them.

That's MHO, anyway.

Did you see Dr. Phil yesterday? His guest weighed about 60 lb. each and were just a bag of bones. The one woman walked 5 hours a day to burn off calories. They were literally walking skeletons. This is so shocking to see. Of course, they are both on death's door but can't do a darn thing about it. It's a crying shame.

Actually, most annorexic women don't realize they're too thin. as odd as that may sound, they think people are looking at them becuase they're too fat, or they look good.

That was very well said. I almost lost my sister to this illness as I said in my previous post. Thank you.

No, they do know it. They see fat, but they know they are too thin. That is why they go to great lengths to hide it by pushing food around, sneaking food into napkins, wearing baggy clothes to hide the thinness and when forced to eat, secretely use laxatives or throw up. Some of them get up and exercise at night, so nobody will see them do it.

They know. They just can't seem to help themselves.

My neice has anorexia, she has for 8 years or so. She is 5 foot 9 and has many times been down to 88 pounds. She just can't make herself better. It's so sad, and it takes a major toll on the whole family.

Having dealt with an eating disorder myself, I can tell you that an eating disorder is much like an addiction to alcohol or drugs. Until the person with the eating disorder wants help, there is nothing anyone else can do. And then sometimes when that person does want help, it is too late.

Eating disorders also involve control issues. Food intake and outake is often thought of as the only thing this person can control in his or her life.

It's such a scary, sad thing to go through and to watch loved ones go through. Luckily I caught myself pretty fast, but there are still days when I want to go back to my destructive behaviors. It seems to be a life long battle for me, but thankfully I have some other outlets that help (such as a good exercise program, healthy eating, etc.).

I, also, would hate for this thread to turn into something about how thin (or overweight) people look and our judgements on them.

If you have HBO watch the documentry called THIN that is running right now.

I knew many girls that purged and did speed growing up but never really knew how bad it really was until this show.

THIN was filmed at the hospital my sister went to.

Thanks for reminding me, I recorded this on my DVR a couple of days ago.

Saw some show that was talking about the pro-anexoria web sites where girls help each other become anexoric. They give each other support and encouragement, basically helping them kill themselves. Very very sad.

That is so tragic :guilty: I saw her mom on the news this morning and she is just heartbroken.

Kudos to Spain for taking a stance...hopefully the other countries will follow suit and require a healthy body mass index for their fashion models too...

You know...back when I was heavily anorexic, the only support system I really had was one of those "Pro-Anorexia" websites. I understand how twisted they seem to outsiders, but the people I communicated with on that site were the ones who kept me alive. Because of them, I had a place where I felt safe, where I could speak without being judged. I had a community who understood exactly what I was going through. I mean, anyone else just told me to "grow up" if I ended up crying because I accidentally got whole milk instead of skim from a restaurant. I don't think anyone who hasn't been there understands how insidious this diesease is

And believe me, any time one of us posted that s/he was going into recovery, we applauded and supported them.

My heart bleeds for anyone with an eating disorder. It's something I wouldn't wish on my very worst enemy. On top of the horrific nature of the illness is the terrible stigma and abuse you have to deal with from the rest of the world. Seriously, think about it...people would jump all over you for mocking someone who was seriously depressed. But making fun of skinny people--almost always accepted in casual conversation.

Now I'm just rambling...
