I would suggest that you purchase the phone in the UK, as long as it is Tri-band or Quad-band it will work in the USA. However I do not know what the equilivent is in the States.

Most phones sold by Carphone Warehouse are unlocked.

I buy USA T Mobile SIM cards and use them in my UK phone as it is Tri-band. This year we have bought them on Ebay from Scottishjohn. USA T Mobile has one of the best coverage’s available:-

Once in the USA you can buy top ups very easily, far easier than getting the SIM cards.

both my and dh's phones are always bought in the US - unlocked quad band phones from Amazon - they are very cheap. They come without a Sim and then you just put in the Sim you want where you want.

In this US we buy the prepaid Sim, $20 for a sim with $20 of credit on it and free to any other sim on the same network. So for $40 we've got 2 us sims with free calls between the two every time we go to the US.
