MNSSHP..tell me about it

Here is the lowdown. My wife and I were planning to roadtrip with some friends of ours to the LSU-Florida game in Gainsville. We were renting an RV and planned to tailgate for the weekend. Well.....my wife and I are WDWjunkees.

We noticed that the Friday night is MNSSHP. Since this is my last year of college and that particular weekend is fall holiday (no school Thursday or Friday) and I will be a teacher once I graduate that this may be one of the only times ever for us to catch the party. (is that a run on sentence) We are thinking of changing the plans or trying to convince the tailgating crew to make a slightly longer trip and stay at Fort wilderness in the RV to catch the party and a little WDW.

Tell me about MNSSHP and will we all enjoy it. All six of us are in our mid to late twenties.

Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party takes place from 7 p.m. to midnight on selected nights at the Magic Kingdom Park. A one-of-a-kind event where Guests are immersed in the fantasy of the Magic Kingdom Park and Halloween. People show up in costume and kids "trick or treat" at the Magic Kingdom. As the name implies, it's a "not so scary" event. So, while there are lots of spooky things -- headless horseman, Halloween parade, etc -- there's nothing really scary. There are no "blood and guts" type attractions or characters, no haunted houses (except for the actual Haunted Mansion), and no moster type things. And, because it's the MK, no alcohol. Although there is, I believe, apple cider as a specialty drink.

So ... whether you'll enjoy it or not depends on how you normally celebrate Halloween. If you and your friends love Disney and are kind of low-key Halloween types, then you'll probably have a great time. If you normally rent scary gory movies and dress up like Freddy Kruger or the Mummy and party on Halloween, and are looking for something less family oriented and more adult level scariness, then you'll probably want to look into Universal's Halloween Horror Nights.

Now, to me, Mickey's way is THE way to celebrate Halloween. IMO it's pitiful what's happened to the holiday since I was a kid. It used to be all about crisp fall leaves, candy corn, candle-lit pumpkins, apple cider, hayrides, and fun ghosts, goblins and witches. NOW it's all blood and gore. After visiting a few haunted houses here in Kansas I now avoid them like the plague. A little fake blood and decapitated department store mannikins go a long long way with me...

I think for "fun" you can go to MNSSHP, and for the gruesome part, you can watch LSU take revenge on Florida in a massacre!!!

Our DD (6yo at the time) was the only one doing the trick-or-treating, but the CMs who were giving out the candy forced candy by the handfuls into my bag and DH's bag even though we weren't holding them open to receive anything. After the 1st two times this happened, we tried to stand back a bit while DD stood in line for her candy. Without fail, the CM "Treaters" would reach around DD (stepping between people to reach us) and push the candy into our bags even though they were low to the ground and held in one hand at our sides. One CM practically fell on his face trying to reach DH's bag. I FINALLY wised up and put DH's bag and my bag into my backpack. In all we were treated at 4 stations that night before I put our bags away.

From what we saw, EVERYONE was encouraged to trick-or-treat (adults included). Is this no longer the case?

Yes, everyone is allowed and encouraged to participate in trick or treating. When I wrote the line "... and kids 'trick or treat' at the Magic Kingdom," I didn't mean to imply that adults couldn't. But I just think of trick or treating as a kid thing.

Oooh, thanks for such lovely pictures! That DOES look like fun! Halloween was my favorite holiday as a kid, and those pics really awakened the kid in me!
