MNSSHP: pix at night?

I just went through the thread of MNSSHP pictures and wonder what tips everyone has for taking these great night time pictures? Did you use a certain film or is there a setting on your camera? Anything special with the flash? This is our first time and I appreciate any help! Thanks!
