I'm planning way ahead here, our next trip isn't till 2015, and I'm debating between October and November. We've only gone to disney during spring and summer, so we have no idea how the weather is like during the fall. My parents and grandma plan to join us during our next trip, it'll be my dad's and grandmas first disney trip, so I kind of want to make it special for them. What do you prefer MNSSHP? or MVMCP? I know they're completely different things, but which one did you enjoy the most? which one did your kids enjoy the most? DS will be almost 4 when we go and hopefully we have another kid by then lol. Also what is the weather like during those two months? and by when do the Christmas decorations go up at the resorts? TIA

First, weather. Both October and December are much cooler than the summer months, thank goodness! Early October's typically pretty warm (mid-80s on average), later October's a bit cooler, but still usually warm enough for swimming at the resorts, if that's your thing. Evening temps are usually cool enough that you'll want a fleece or other light jacket, but shouldn't really be cold. December's a bit less predictable. You could find temps in the 80s or down in the 30s... or both in the same week! Average is more like mid-60s or low-70s during the day, with chillier nights. You might have swimming weather, but it's not guaranteed in December. I've seen a lot of recommendations that October is the "perfect" time to go, weather-wise. I just might have to agree...

In October, not only does Magic Kingdom have the Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, but there's also the Food & Wine Festival at EPCOT. I haven't done the Halloween party yet (but I will, this October!). I hear the Halloween party has a terrific vibe, though. It's the one time when adults are allowed to wear costumes into the park, which is kinda cool if you like to get into the Halloween spirit yourself. It's also when the villains who aren't usually out and about in the parks are doing meet & greets, which I think is pretty cool. The villains are often the most fun to interact with - even the ones who don't talk manage to play their characters so well! On the other hand, I have been to the Food & Wine Festival, and *really* enjoyed the experience. It's a great way to be a little more adventurous in your eating, because it's all small plates and little tastes, for a couple of bucks a pop. So you can try all sorts of foods from all sorts of cuisines (and new wines and beers, if that's your thing) as you walk around the World Showcase at EPCOT. Yum! It's a nice treat, especially for the adults in your group, though if your little one's an adventurous eater, he might enjoy that aspect, too! It's just an added perk to going in the fall, but it's something you can completely skip if that isn't your cup of tea...

Christmas decorations typically start going up in early November. MK will be fully decorated by the night of the first Very Merry Christmas Party (early in November), the rest of the parks + resorts will be fully decorated by the weekend of Thanksgiving. So if you go in December, you'll definitely see the World all decked out for Christmas! And there really is nothing like Christmastime at Disney World. (It does get insanely busy over Chrismas - New Year's Day, though.) The resorts, in particular, tend to shine when it comes to decorations - Animal Kingdom Lodge is beyond breathtaking when decorated, as is Wilderness Lodge, the gingerbread displays at Grand Floridian and other hotels are just amazing, etc etc etc. I have done the Very Merry Christmas Party - it was lots of fun. We did it twice - my son was 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 the times we went. He stayed up past midnight, at 3 1/2, to meet the 7 Dwarfs and ride Dumbo without a wait and see the parade and watch the fantastic holiday Wishes show/fireworks. It was expensive, and we probably won't do the Christmas party again, but we had a terrific time and are very glad we did it on our last two trips!

Our two Christmas party nights, almost exactly a year apart, couldn't have been more different, weather-wise. In early December 2011, it was FREEZING out at night - when it snowed on Main Street USA during the party, it was totally believable!! We were all bundled up in fleeces and jackets and wishing we had gloves! It was so cold, we even bought a warm, fuzzy blanket in the park to bundle around my son as he sat in his stroller - to go on top of his double-layer of pants + long-sleeve shirt + warm fleece jacket. A year later, in 2012, it was cool, but mild. We were comfy in jeans + sweaters and had no need of so many layers. (See what I mean about December being a bit unpredictable, weather-wise?)

Having already gone in December, several times, we're ready for a change of pace, and can't wait for our October trip. We're hoping to spend a little more time at the hotel this go-around, enjoying the warm weather and swimming in the pool.

But I don't think you could go wrong with either time frame. Either way, you're at Disney World, right? :)

Both party's are great, and have many similarities. So it depends which you would be more interested in. Here is my breakdown of the attractions:

Special Shows: MVMCP has lots of extra shows with Holiday themes. If you love Christmas Music, you will enjoy them all. Not as many shows at MNSSHP, but lots of fun to see the Villains.

Parades: Both are good, but IMHO the Boo to You Parade is arguably the best Parade Disney has.

Fireworks: Great shows at both. Lots of fun. I think I my prefer the Halloween one as it involves the villains.

Characters: Both awesome. Many characters you will not see out any other time (such as all 7 dwarfs together). It is extra fun however to see all the characters out, and dressed in Halloween costumes. And if you are a Villains fan, more likely to see them at MNSSHP.

Special Treats: Last time we did MVMCP we got free hot chocolate and a cookie. It was nice, but nothing special. At MNSSHP, you get to Trick or Treat (everyone, not just kids) and they give you handfuls of candy. You can really leave with way too much candy. And how fun is it to be an adult trick or treating with your child, not just watching them do it. Really fun times here.

Breaking it down like this, I guess I like MNSSHP better. However, I would never miss an opportunity to be at WDW when it is decorated for Christmas. There is just such an extra magic that you cannot see any other time of the year. If I had my ideal, I think I would go for two weeks, starting the last few days of October ( so I can go to MNSSHP) and remain to see the parks get decorated. It is kind of fun to walk into a park, and have everything decorated overnight, seeing it both ways in one trip.

We have never been there for Christmas but this will be our 5th Halloween there. My kids love it! The Trick and Treating and the Shows. Our family loves Halloween and we live in the north so sometimes we have snow or it's too cold to go out. This is the best for them. and it's so nice and warm.
The Boo to You parade is the Best! and the Villians show is wonderful.

I have a feeling you will be happy with either one. I think you have to decide if you family is more into Halloween or Christmas.

Is the MVMMCP generally pretty crowded? We will be there in early November, likely for the first party. Thank you!

AKMama, I'd say that the MVMCP is definitely a big draw for the Magic Kingdom. The park was hoppin' the two times we went! It was really busy, but not insanely so... especially as the night wore on and many of the families with younger kids left. If you can, I'd say go on a weeknight instead of a weekend - there should be slightly lower attendance during the week. I don't know whether the 1st night of the party has higher than usual attendance... but I have heard that, overall, as it gets closer and closer to Christmas, the parties get busier and busier.

Hope that helps...

I've been to 2 Christmas parties, and 4 or 5 Halloween parties. If that tells you anything.;)

I love the Halloween parties! Nothing like trick or treating in the Magic Kingdom. Plus it is the only time adults are allowed to dress up and be in the parks! The fireworks show, Hallowishes, is my favorite Disney fireworks show, hands down. And the parade is very neat too.:goodvibes

The only thing the Christmas party really offers in the parade. But if you want to see Santa coming down Main Street you have to grab your spot very early. As in at least an hour before parade time. Earlier if you want to be right on the curb. Seeing it snow on Main Street is pretty cool, but the Halloween party has much more to offer.

I vote for MNSSHP. I've only been to each once, but ever since we did the Halloween party, I've wanted to go back. I agree with PP that the Boo to you parade is the best! The trick or treating was great too. We also enjoyed seeing all of the different costumes - some of them looked like the real Disney characters! I'm hoping to get back there this year for Halloween!

MNSSHP seems to always have the edge, from those who experience both. We enjoy it, but October is still hot! For weather alone, I would choose MVMCP if it's an option.
