Any one from southwest missouri have any great time saving driving routes.
We would like to avoid Atlanta if at all possible, unless its absolutely the quickest way.
Thanks!

I'm not from Missouri, but I use the Trip Maker software from Rand McNally and I thought I'd give you what I found:

I used Springfield, MO as the starting point and Port Canaveral, Fl as the destination.

The Quickest Route was 1278 miles, starting with I-44 to I-64 to I-24 to I-75 through Atlanta and the Florida Turnpike to FL 528.

The Shortest Route is 1119 miles and has LOTS of smaller roads and does appear to bypass Atlanta. It looks like it does take I-55 near Memphis for about 25 miles and the rest are US Routes or State Routes. It does show a route that goes from Springfield, Mo to Memphis to Birmingham, Al to Columbus, Ga and then catches up to I-75 near Valdosta, Ga.

The Scenic Route is 1592 miles and also avoids Atlanta. It goes East from Memphis, Tn and actually goes North for awhile and goes near the North Carolina / Georgia border. It ends up along the East Coast and then down I-95, for a short period.

I plotted a new trip using Springfield, Mo as the origin, but I added Memphis, Tn and Birmingham, Al and then Columbus, Ga as 'stopovers' or places to route through. This yielded a trip of 1168 miles and looks promising. I'll try to simplify it a little more and then post the driving directions from the program for you.

hope that helps

albiats thank you so much!
We are thinking about flying but flying in out of Springfield is a nightmare, and kansas city is about 3 hours away. I appreciate all the info.
thanks again!

I just refined the trip further by specifying Memphis, Tn and Dothan, Al as the only places to route through and it shortened the trip to 1138 miles and a little less than 18 hours of driving time.

It uses US Routes and Interstate Routes and you catch up with Interstate 75 after you've been on I-10 in Florida for two hours and it avoids Atlanta completely.

If you'd like me to post the exact route directions from the program, let me know and I'll be glad to do it.

hope that helps

18 hours, wow! not as bad as i thought. The last we were going from springfield to memphis they were doing a lot of road work in arkansas so maybe that helped.
albiats if you wouldn't mind passing them along i would appreciate it.
I owe you one!

There is similar "discussion" on routes going from Little Rock, AR, with the primary focus on going through Memphis. If you check Route Suggestions

Hope that gets you to the thread.

Takes us about 13-1/2 hours from Memphis via Birmingham-Dothan-I10. I don't know how long it takes from Springfield to Memphis.

TINKY-We live in SW MO also, south of Spfd, looking for the same info also. We are going to WDW in July, Will be driving this year for the first time, Most of the time we fly out of KCI. With high prices in Spfd no chance.. Looks like we will be going to Memphis-Jackson Miss-on over to Destin fla, Going to spend two days in Destin then on to WDW. Still thinking about route home, want to bypass Atlanta also??? 82 days and counting...... CBR99 Allstar Movies Feb2001 Allstar Music Aug 2001.........

I'll try to clean it up a little, the formatting is very difficult.

Read each line as follows:
First field is the name of the road, if it says (BR), it means it's a 'Business Route'.
Second field is the Direction you'll travel
Third field is the number of miles to travel on that segment
Fourth field is the time of day
Fifth field is the accumulated number of miles from the starting point of the trip.

The time of day is useless after you stop for any reason, but it breaks up the info line and makes it easier to separate the fields.

I had it set to start driving at 8am and to end at 7pm each day.
There are no provisions for fuel, food, or rest stops, you add those in.

Whenever it says 'RoadSense', it is a road construction alert.

I'll give you a translation of the first four lines of the driving directions:

Take US-65 (a Business Route), go South for 2 miles end time is 8:02am, accumulated mileage is 2 miles.

Take US-65, South for 7 miles, end time is 8:08am, accumulated mileage is 9 miles.

RoadSense info

Take US-60 East for 38 miles, end time will be 8:47am, accumulated mileage is 47 miles.

and so on.

DISFAN-
DH really wants to fly (not me.. a big ol' chicken). After the drive from Springfield to Orlando it takes him about 12-24 hours to relax. We have 3 kids and they are great on long trips but I can understand why he is so high strung once we get out of the car. Its not only whats going on inside the car but watching the road and other drivers for 20 hours. But would he let me drive??? uh huh... anyway...... got off track..

i checked NWA out of spfld to orlando and it was$254.50 p/person. But that means getting on that itty bitty teenie weenie Canadair Jet (sp) 50 seater to Memphis. I've never flown on a plane that small but I can't imagine I would like it in the least. AA has about the same rate for the dates we wanted but the connection is STL or DFW, pass.
You may want to check again for flights. Unless you fly Vanguard (which I'm not hearing good things about on the boards) its actually cheaper to fly out of Springfield, for the dates we wanted... did that make sense?

Good luck and have a wonderful time in July!

Obviously, you can simplify the directions and end up with fewer lines by eliminating the distinction between Business Routes and regular routes. Also, there were a few instances where it made a new line of directions to distinguish when another route number coincided with the original one, which isn't always essential info.

You also don't have to go into the towns I used to force the program to use a certain road instead of going thru Atlanta.

I had the program set for 70 mph on Interstates, 60 mph on US Routes, and 55 mph on State Routes.

hope that helps

TINKY- We will be taking two weeks for this trip, so looking foward to the drive,ha-ha, First time for the big drive for us? We have new truck with vcr so that should help, Last year we flew SW out of KCI for $120.00 each. CBR99 Allstar Movies Feb2001 Allstar Music Aug2001.....PS-Let me know about your Cruise thinking about doing that next year??????

Tinky,

I dont know when you are going (forgot what you said) but I'm also in Springfield. We are going the 2nd week of June. We got airline tix from out of KC flying US Airways for only $169.00 total with taxes (128 before tax). Right after we booked those they had the friends fly free and it dropped the price by about $30. I dont know if that offer is going on but you might check. I have two 6 yr olds (5 at the time) who traveled decently to Destin last year over night 13 hrs so they slept most of the way but 18-20 hours is out of the question!!!

I was thrilled with the price, considering flying out of Springfield was over $200, with a layover in St louis! And flying out of St louis wasnt any cheaper (at the time I was checking) We do have a layover in charlotte NC, but its only for like an hour or so.

You might check US Airways though!!

Alisa
