We are taking our third trip with the kids to DW in April. Now that they are older (8 and 11) they are eager to try some of the "big" rides. Both love Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, and Star Tours, but now they want to experience ToT, Mission Space, and the Rock and Roller Coaster. I'm a bit nervous about taking them (and myself) on these rides. Any thoughts? Personally I'm most nervous about Mission Space and how I will feel afterwards....

Rock 'n Rollercoaster- Except for the take off, this is actually a pretty tame rollercoaster. It has one loop, but it is right at the beginning and most people don't even notice it until it is over. The ride is smooth and over in a minute or so. I think this would be a great ride to test the kids (and yourself) out on.

Tower of Terror- This ride isn't as bad as it seems. There is actually a bit of a ride element to it, it is not just a free fall. The constant screaming you hear is more of a natural reaction to the falling sensation, not because it is truly terrifying. If the kids did RnR with no problems, they should be able to handle this.

Mission Space- This is unlike any attraction I have ever ridden. The second half of the ride is very similar to a motion simulator like Star Tours, so they should be able to handle that. The take off is very intense though, it may freak them out. Also, if they have any claustrophobic tendencies, this may not be the ride for them. I would suggest having you go on the ride first and judging for yourself if the kids can handle it.

Every person is different, and only you can be the best judge of what your kids can handle.

Thanks! Any problems with motion sickness or a spinning feeling after Mission Space?

Great question and one I want answered also.

A few years back we did Body Wars first thing in the day and I was dizzy and ill most of the day from it. I have heard recently that many complained of this and it was from the tracts being out of sync.

I sure do not want to ruin another day by feeling sick all day. We plan on riding this early in the morning. How do the rest of you feel after riding it!

We had no problems on Mission Space. In July, when the ride was in previews yet, we just happened to be walking by when it was open, so we went on eventhough we had just finished a HUGE meal at O'hanas. We are two twenty-somethings though with strong stomachs and we love thrill rides.

In December, my mom went on and was a little freaked out when the capsule closed. She felt very claustrophobic and panicked a little. She said the ride itself was fine, she just didn't like being closed in.

My best advice is to keep your head back and stare straight ahead. People start having problems when the start looking around.

If you have motion sickness issues, and especially if you have problems with other simulator rides, you may want to think twice about Mission: Space. Although I didn't get sick, I felt very woozy, and was worried the whole time that I might get sick. I looked straight ahead and didn't move, but still felt nauseous. I can usually handle spinning rides, but I have problems with simulators (and I can't read in the car, either.)

I didn't even know I was spinning during MIssion Space, it was super cool. I handled it well, and I have some health issues going on that make some things uncomfortable.

I don't think you'll have problems with any of those, they're all great! Let the kids even ask some people getting off of them, esp those around thier age, and see what they think then =)

Have a great time!!!!!!!!

I can't comment on Mission:Space because I haven't ridden it yet but ToT and RnRc are two of my favorites. I'm in my late 40s but I love the rides (but I am getting older and some of them are starting to bother me, like The Hulk and Dueling Dragons) but these 2 are nothing like that. ToT is a more of a ride than freefall even though it looks that way (I will not get on a freefall ride again like Dr. Doom at IOA) but I love ToT. And RnRc is one of all time favorites. It is a very smooth rollercoaster and dark and the music is EXTREMELY loud but somehow it adds to the fun. I rode this 2 years ago with my then 17yo niece 9 times in a row so that should tell you how much I liked it. I'm going to give MS a try but I have a feeling that it will be a one time thing. LOL!! Anyway, have a great vacation!

My DDs (10 and 6) love all three rides. The first time we went on MS, I was worried about my 6yo. I spent most of my time looking to the side (even tho I knew better) trying to see her which was impossible because she disappears down in the shoulder restraints, lol! I felt absolutely no ill effects from the ride, even tho I did not stare straight ahead the whole time!

My dd, 10, and I love M:S. Not crazy about ToT tho. Rode if for the first time in August and it was no problem. But, we did it again in Dec. and the sequencing was different and I hated it!! Won't be doing that one again any time soon!! I hate the free fall feeling. But, I love RnRC. I'm hoping to convince my dd to try it this summer. It is incredibly smooth. The only way you realize you've been upsidedown is that your shoulders hit the restraint. We had no problem at all with M:S, although my dh did have a headache from it. But he has some visual issues, so we think that was his reason.

My DS 7 absolutely loves MS and TOT(he isn't quite tall enough for RnR). We too lucked into going on MS several times in July, then again in October, November, and last week. The key is to look straight ahead and don't close your eyes. You will feel a little light headed when you get off, but we weren't dizzy or feeling sick. They now put motion sickness bags on the console in front of you should you feel the need(we never have!). If your kids enjoy other roller coasters they will enjoy RnR, TOT is not nearly as bad as people might think, and MS is a ride like no other. Like other's have said, only you know your own children. I am sure that if you like them, your kids will as well. Have a great time!

I just tried RnRc for the first time last week, it was really great. I have been on SM many times, and went on it the day before I tried RnRc. I liked RnRc a lot better, after the take off it is a lot smoother ride than SM. One of my DS's (age 11)doesn't ride roller coasters due to the drops, he was very nervous about this ride but wanted to try it, and he loved it!

I have never been on TOT (I don't like straight drops), but DH said since they installed the seat belts it was a lot easier to take.

MS is something that seems to affect everyone differently. I've heard from people who get motion sickness, that they were fine, and some who weren't, the same thing with people who don't normally get motion sick. I am not prone to motion sickness and was feelling a little queasy before riding (I know this was from not getting much sleep my first night there). I was fine, but I had to really concentrate to keep my eyes open and to keep taking even breaths. The impulse to hold my breath and squeeze my eyes shut on take off was very strong. DH and DS's liked it, one DS was fine, but the other was a little disoriented for about 3 minutes after. He said he closed his eyes involuntarily.

I get off of most traditional spinning rides dizzy and with a headache, but I didn't experience any of that on Mission: Space. Its really a great, unique ride.

I think the scariest part was all the warnings before you get on!

I believe it spins in order to give you the "g-forces" so that you feel as if you are lifting off from earth. But I would never have known that I was spinning. I, like a previous poster, kept trying to watch my DD to my left, to be sure she was okay, but I really couldn't see her. After that I just looked straight forward the whole time and I was fine. I too, am a person who cannot read in the car without feeling horrible, but I was fine in M:S. DD and I also rode RNR eight times in one day and loved every minute of it. ..........................P

Sounds like we will try all three rides - maybe we'll come away with some new favorites!
