Personally I don't see why this is national news. A governor from another state having an affair isn't going to impact the state of the union much. I'll be glad when this circus dies down.

Well while it doesn't affect me I think it is a bigger story then if Jon or Kate are having an affair. Those threads go over 250 pages. I am all the way on the other side of the country and I know if the moron I voted for pulled something like this I would want some pressure on him to resign. I do think the sheer insanity of it all makes it a national story,after all they all end up getting some news time for these things.

Yes and as far as I have heard his family didn't have any contact with him or know where he was. But thats ok becuse this is a family matter and he was just crying in Argentina and no one should cast stones.

Family matter is right. He has probably destroyed his family.

Then again, if I elect someone to be in charge of my state, that person ought to be accessible at all times. He just sounds like a total failure. And you just know that somewhere, there's a reality show producer figuring out a way to put this guy on TV.

So is he like the first Governor to have ever gone out of state? I think other Governors do travel from time to time and all states have guidelines on who is in charge when the Governor is out of town.

Personally, I don't care who he's sleeping with as long as he's doing a good job for the people that elected him. Who he sleeps with is his family's business.

I agree with this. I'm more concerned, as I live in SC, as a PP mentioned, is what if our state had an emergency, tornado, etc., and our governor is no where to be found, and no one knows who's in charge?!

The standard procedure is that if a Governor is going to be inaccessible for a period of time, there is temporary transfer of power to the Lt. Governor.

You are correct. The transfer of power was not done. This is the major issue IMO. We don't have the most competent Lt Gov either.

I have to say that I really somewhat admire his wife. The local news stopped Sanford's wife as she was leaving somewhere yesterday and asked her if this affair was going to hurt her husband's politcal career. Her response-- I don't really care about his political career right now. My focus is on my family. -- Also they are not currently living in the same house.

It's national news because his name has been out there as a possible Presidential candidate for 2012.

I can't believe this guy. He gave up on (in no particular order) his duties as governor, a possible run for national office, responsibility for four children, and a beautiful, wealthy (I understand that she is an heir to the Skil fortune) wife for some woman who lived so far away that it costs several thousand dollars just to visit and have sex with her. I seriously question his mental stability and his ability to serve as governor.

hmmmmm, who could have had access to his e-mail account and just be angry enough to release private emails to the press -- a jilted wife perhaps???

This is speculation, but on the radio station i listen to, they think the newspaper was sitting on the story in hopes to break it if and when he ran for president. Makes sense to me.

I was thinking he sent them from his gov. computer and you know that is fair game. I'm sure someone in IT there would have no problem passing them on. Just a guess on my part though.

I couldn't believe the gall of the guy, on so many counts. Then for him to stand and speak of about a story from the bible that had the male adulterer marry his mistress (and the adulterer killed her husband), saying something to the effect that everything worked out . To me, that revealed his intentions. I wouldn't be surprised if he thinks he can marry his mistress and keep his elected job too.

I do admire his wife. She is handling the whole thing well.

He really needs to resign or be impeached. I don't care so much about the affair - except for how that affects his family, and that's their business. However, he was derelict in his duty. A governor taking off without telling anyone and leaving no one in charge - what was he thinking? What if something happened in the state where they needed him? I've also heard that he's going to have to repay more than $8,000 for a travel reimbursement he received for a previous trip to Argentina for "economic development" that apparently had nothing to do with the stated purpose of the trip and instead dealt with his mistress. So, he has submitted and been reimbursed for a fraudulent trip, which in my mind means that he should be charged with a felony.

Personally, given his exteme lack of judgement on so many fronts, I question his mental stability.

And kudos to his wife for not being one of those "stand by my man" women.
