I'll start by saying I'm a parent of a teen, not a a teen.

My son will be in grade 10 next year when we want to take a 2 week WDW holiday.

He does well in school and exams aren't until late January.

What are your thoughts about missing that much work? Just like me off of work, of course he'll love it, but its the return home that concerns us.

Maybe you can ask your son's teachers if he could get his work to take with him? So he doesn't have so much to do when he comes back.

If I was him, I'd probably feel a little out of the loop, being gone for that long. There would be a lot of work to catch up on, right?

That being said, 2 weeks in WDW would be pure bliss. Haha.

I agree with that. He can choose to do some of his work while in the room each day. It doesn't have to be a lot, just enough so he doesn't fall too far behind.

As long as you and him agree that he can handle it, I say go and enjoy your vacation.

I did that all the time. I went to my teachers and explained that I wouldn't be here for days x,y, and z and I asked for some of the work that I'd be missing. Then I would do it during the plane ride and during any down time at the resort.

Also, send a note into the school to your DS to give to the secretaries so they know in advance.

I would ask the teachers for the work I'd be missing and let them know ahead of time. I went away for 4 days to disney in 8th grade and they told me to worry about it when I got back. But since it's two weeks, he'll most likely be missing a lot, so ask the teachers and I'm sure they'll give it to you.

:)

its really easy to fall behind and almost impossible to catch back up.

::yes:: i agree.

And of course asking teachers for work and what he will miss and such.

Just tell him that he is responsible for his work.

Go ahead and enjoy your vacation.:thumbsup2

now i don't know what kind of student your son is or what kind of school he goes to, but i know that i missed 6 days last semester because of sickness and that was hard to catch up in. i just think two weeks is too much.

i'm missing 2 days of school because of disney and i think that's almost too much. i will admit that i do go to a very demanding and tough high school, however, so your son's situation may be very different.

is there anyway you could plan it around a vacation he has? that would make it a lot easier and you could minimize the amount of time he misses.
plus, as most kids know, school work minimizes itself around the breaks.

i agree.

im in eleventh grade in almost all honors/ap classes.

while 2weeks in disney would be amazing, id do it when he DOESNT miss ten days of school. maybe over xmas break?

It all depends on what type of student your son is.

I don't mean just course level wise. I'm going to be a senior and will be missing 5 days come November/December for a trip down. I have missed school every year since 2004 (when we bought DVC). I missed school several times prior to that as well going all the way back to 1st grade. I take all advanced classes when offered. This year I'll be missing Advanced Art II (a class nearly impossible to make up due to all the in-class artsy stuff), Advanced Vietnam War Era Studies, Advanced Anatomy and Physiology (which will be impossible to make up if I miss the dissection, but I should be back for that), and Advanced Writing (not so hard to make up). I plan on taking work with me, including a sketch book and pencil set to do extra credit for my art course.

Last year I missed Advanced French IV, Advanced Psychology, Advanced American Literature, Advanced Algebra II/Trig, and AP US History. Yet, I made up all my work and come the next report card my lowest grade was a B- in Algebra. I keep my grades up at all other times during the year so that the week I miss yearly doesn't affect them as much. I don't procrastinate with making up my work, or if given the chance I do it in advance. It is possible to miss a week or two and make up all the work, it just takes a bit of commitment.

I agree with Axel, but 2 weeks away from high school can be really hard for anyone. Someone said (sorry I don't remember who) that it can be easy to fall behind and impossible to catch up is so true. Again this is also true. One of the guys in my Alegbra2/ Trig honors class missed five days because he got really sick and had to drop the class because he couldn't make up the work. It can probably be really stressful to catch up too, so just make sure that your son can handle it.

Maybe try going over a break, which is what my family does so that I don't miss any school.

I agree, that is a LOT to make up. Some teachers won't have things to give him. Some teachers count in-class participation (discussions) heavily in their grades. Missing 10 days is not at all helpful.

Besides all of that, look into attendance policys at your son's HS. My HS's policy was no more than 3 Unexcused days per term (quarter) for semester classes; no more than 5 unexcused days for year-long classes. If his school is like mine, he could technically have an A+ in every class but fail if he misses school for vacations.

That will probably be alot of work to make up. I wouldn't do it. I personally would never be able to get caught up and my grades would probably be down for the rest of the semester. And I would worry about it for the whole vacation. I suggest overlapping a week over like a winter break, spring break, or some other sort of vacation. Two weeks, it just seems like alot of work to be made up. I would really be stressed out by soo much extra work to cram in when you return.

It will be VERY difficult for him to catch up but i know if you file in advance (my school takes two weeks notice) that you will be gone they will give you all assignments and you must have them done when you return. I took a week out for a performance i was in and even that one week was tough. I had at least 2 test in every class to make up plus all the extra work teachers decided to add...If you think your son is a good enough student then by all means do it! I would give him time every evening to work on his school work also. Or make sure he gets it early to work at home. And try taking an extra day when you get back for him to catch up on it.

if your missing school your missing crowds

I've done that before I took a week long trip the week before February break so I was gone for 2 weeks.

I got the work that I missed and was able to do it while I was in WDW and on the plane there and home and stuff.

But then again I was in 5th grade so the workload was definately lighter than it will be this year *I'm going into 10th grade*
My advice is if he thinks he can do it and keep up with the work and you have faith that he can do it then go for it!
