Okay, so are you all updated on this? If not, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LPv9L6sy5c

Okay, I'm not looking at this at the political side of things. I understand that she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. But the way she executed it was in such poor taste. You can say you don't agree with GLBTQ without being disrespectful, condescending, or rude. There are ways to handle it with grace.

Opinions on the execution, not the statement?

I think it was the "no offense" that she threw in there that cost her the most.

It showed that she worries too much about what other people think of her. If you truly believe in something, you should be able to say it without having to say that there's no feelings of offense because people should (though, given, they rarely do) recognize that it's an opinion/belief and respect that, even if it doesn't align with their own opinion/belief.

also, she's ok with saying "homosexual marriage", but can't come up with "heterosexual marriage" and goes with "opposite marriage" instead? Doesn't strike me as the type of eloquent speaking worthy of a pageant queen. It's reminisce (vaguely) of Miss Teen South Carolina 2007. Bad wording is just....it's the worst way to lose a competition.

I thought it was distasteful and contradictory. First she said she think's it great that our country has choice in the matter, but then goes on to say that in "her country" and her family, "Opposite" marriage is the right choice. I heard it thinking, "***?" It really pisses me off that such as airhead came in second place. Not to mention such a close-minded one.

Wanna know what I think?

Its her opinion. If she wants to say that. She can say it.

And I think Perez Hilton should be thrown off as a judge. He said that if she won he would "run up there and rip that tiarra off her head."

Closed minded much?

Are you SERIOUS?

Bleeeeeeeeep beep beep bleeeeep just went my mind (and my mouth).

It's not a choice, Miss California. Yes, America is about choices, but being GLBTQ is not one of them.

That's it, I'm officially doing my research paper for English on gay issues in literature.

Guys, both of you, that isn't what Sonya was asking about!

She was asking about the presentation of the answer, the wording of it.

I agree, she is entitled to her opinion. While some may not agree with it, she is allowed to have it.

However, as previously stated, I don't think it should have been cause for her to lose the competition had she been able to articulate her answer better.

As Ppufi (sorry I don't know your name) pointed out, she goes from speaking about her beliefs and then she's suddenly speaking for the entire country ("my country"). And as I pointed out, she should (as a pageant contestant) have had a better grasp on public speaking and should have been able to use the correct term ("heterosexual marriage") instead of "opposite marriage".

What she said...made absolutely no sense at all.

“Well, I think it’s great that Americans can choose one or the other. Umm, we live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what? In my country, and in my family, I think that I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

Those two statements completely contradict themselves. IMO, she's tragically confused. Not to mention, she doesn't seem to be the brightest light bulb in the bunch.

Yaaaa....I don't even think she should've come in second place to be honest. That's a terrible answer, not only due to the content (which we won't get into) but the phrasing, the words she chose, the contradictory nature, the whole thing was just a mess.

The bolded part was the most confusing:
“Well, I think it’s great that Americans can choose one or the other. Umm, we live in a land that you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage and, you know what? In my country, and in my family, I think that I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

Soo....do you not live in America then?? I don't understand the phrasing.
She says Americans can choose, but then in "my country"...etc. :confused3

I know it's tough when you're under a lot of pressure....I've spoken in public plenty of times and I know it's tough and nerve wracking....but the thing is these women are given all the questions BEFOREHAND so that they can start thinking about their answers. It's just a matter of which question is pulled. She certainly could've had enough to to think of a way to work around the question or answer it in a way in which she didn't have to include her political beliefs.

Anyways, I think it was just a confusing, contradictory, alienating ("no offense"??? totally alienating) mess. Not worthy of first runner up IMHO.

Please re-read my original post. My question was on the execution of her statement, not the statement itself.
(:

I feel like Perez is taking this over the top...
I do disagree with her comment but everyone has there own opinon
I do feel like love is love and you can not control love but I do realize that everyone has different opinons
I dont be believe that she should of lost over this question as we need to respect everyones opinons on this...
I was in a pretty in dept conversation with someone from my church over this issue hours before the Miss USA pagent where I said my own opinons and we did disagree.
But I feel like this is a hairy topic no matter how much I do disagree with many people I know on it I do feel like Perez the judges etc. should respect Miss California's opinons
I do feel like Miss California is the geuine real thing and I feel like it was really cool that she did speak her true opinons even if they do clash with mine...

Yeah, the "In my Country" comment really ticked me off. Newsflash lady: This is OUR country!
She went on in another interview to tell Perez that "she was praying for him". Not in a "I'm praying for you to get well (medically)" sense either.

Like I said, I have no problem with her opinion. It is her opinion, which doesn't have effect on laws. The way she worded it was absolutely horrible - condescending, alienating, etc.
I hate to say it, but I agree with Perez - minus the whole "dumb witch" comment. Miss America is supposed to represent ALL!!! of America, which means including all those that you may not necessarily agree with.

Yep, I totally agree.

I'm sick of hearing about her...honestly, I feel bad for N. Carolina...she should be getting all this attention, NOT this other chick!!!!

Miss California had a horrible execution. She was nervous, and it showed. Her question was considered fair in terms of difficulty, and she couldn't deliver. Personally, if the best speaker I knew gave their opinion of an issue that differed from mine, you'd better believe I'd listen.

She started off with "umm" which is a big no-no in the pageant world (or public speaking world). She was smart to include the bit on a country where you can choose. But she totally contradicted herself by saying "in my country." She didn't think at all before she spoke. She never actually answered the question.

I do think the media and Perez went over the top. They were the ones to turn this into a gay marriage/right to voice opinion debate.

There was nothing wrong with her opinion - it was just how she delivered it. Had she taken a deep breath and collected her thoughts before she spoke, she could've conveyed her message effectively. (And then Perez would've jumped on stage and ripped the crown off her head!)

She never said homosexual marriage during the speech...:confused3

hypocritical much?
your close-minded because you cant accept other peoples beliefs

Yea you have the choice to have a spouse as the same sex as you (homosexual marriage) or the opposite sex (Heterosexual marriage), but she thinks that there should only be heterosexual marriage. Whats wrong with that?

What she said...made absolutely no sense at all.

How doesnt that make sense?...she saying that she thinks that its great that this country we can choose if want to have a heterosexual or homosexual marriage, but she believes that marriage should only be between a man and a women.

Its like saying that its awesome that a person can choose what type of political party they want to be, but you think that one political party is better

she never said the R or D or I or ect.. Word...so how is that political?

There are more people who are against gay marraige than for gay marriage in the United States. This is why gay marriage is only allowed in 4 states...
So when you represent something as a whole, you speak for the majority...thats just common basic speaking

_________________________________________________________________
My whole problem with this being such a big deal, is that this would've just gone on w/o anyone really caring if it wasnt about gay marriage. Thats the only reason, many of the other contestants were stuttering over their words, do i hear anyone bashing them???? NO

Maybe gay marriage would be more supported by others, but everytime someone disagrees with it, a whole swarm of people come flameing the person and calling them close-minded

About her speech: yes, it wasnt the most elequent(sp) speech. It wasnt delievered perfect, but she had a very controverial topic, and i think she didnt want to rub people the wrong way, but ended up doing just that

Actually, this thread wasn't meant to be political. I don't know where you get off trying to bring political mumbo jumbo here when it's clearly not asked for.

Once again, I'll put it in big bold letters: the purpose of this thread was to discuss the deliverance of the statement, not. the. statement. itself!

As for your statement directed toward me, if you would like to discuss gay marriage more, you can PM me.
Rest assured, if her speech had been about something equally as controversial, like euthanasia or racism, I'd be equally if not more infuriated.

I think it's being turned into something much larger than it is. That's all I have to say about it.

It's not political at all...:confused3

I was simply trying to figure out an example of a controversial topic that i could make sense of and use as an example. So im sorry that i placed political examples on your thread...my bad
