Mint Juleps

So I keep reading about all these people who LOVE the Mint Juleps at Disneyland. But I'm wondering ... if you've had the Mint Juleps at Disneyland, have you ever had a real, honest-to-goodness Mint Julep, and if so, did you like it?

I actually like an authentic Mint Julep ... but an authentic Mint Julep is not a drink for the faint of heart! It's mainly bourbon on the rocks with just a LITTLE simple syrup thrown in and real mint, with lots of mint near your nose to smell while you drink. It's not sweet at all. I can't help but think a non-alcoholic version would be very sweet and very dreadful, since the taste of bourbon really can't be reproduced without alcohol. I've been afraid to try one.

Opinions?

I love a real mint julep. The version at Disneyland has very little in common with the real thing, I didn't care for it.

I've never had a real mint julep and from your description they sound awful (I generally don't like the taste of Bourbon, so that probably rules me out for a real mint julep).

I would agree that the Disneyland version is going to be far sweeter than what you'd expect. It's more like drinking fruit punch (not in terms of flavor, but sweetness).

Personally, I would try one just to see. If you don't like it, then it's only one drink and you don't have to finish it. If you do like it, then it's a good thing you tried it. I'm generally of the "try things once" category because then at least you'll know for yourself what it tastes like.

You could also try making it at home for yourself. The Disney Food Blog posted the recipe and it largely tastes "right" to me. (I've made the recipe a few times and have been generally happy with how it's come out.)

I tried the Mint Julep once -- took one sip and threw it away. Tasted like cough syrup to me.

I like the mint julep and it does not remind me of cough syrup at all. Cough syrup all seem to have a slightly bitter taste/after bite. If there was a cough syrup that tasted like Disneyland's mint julep, I'd be all for that one when I'm sick!

I made the mistake of trying a "real" mint julep once at a restaurant, hoping it would somewhat taste like DL version. Boy was I wrong! It was yucky. I much prefer the DL version :goodvibes

I like both. The DL version is very refreshing to me on hot days, not to mention I have fond memories of drinking them during my childhood visits.

I like the Cool Lime Refreshers at Starbucks. I have them add a bit more sweetener to them, and it's like I am at DL. Just need to add a cherry!

I find the DL mint juleps cloying, way too sweet. And I have a sweet tooth!

Not my thing ... Well actually I tried it at a bar and at Disneyland and yuck! But to each their own I know some people like them

I'm not a fan. Tastes like mouthwash to me. I can't shake it.

The rest of my family though---they love it. We make the stop there every trip. That and some Mickey beignets from the walk up window.

To each their own I guess. I had never heard of one until friends went 1 year to DL after we did and raved about them! So when we went back the next year we tried one and it was a unanimous hit!! From the 3 year old to the 63 year old, we all loved it.

Tried one at DL once. One sip was enough. It's forever known as "Scope on the Rocks" in our family.

On the other hand, I loooooooooove a Dole Whip float on a hot day! :)

I am looking forward to trying the mint julep and beignets on our next trip....

We enjoy both real mint julips and DL versions, but they are NOTHING alike, save for the mint. In my opinion, you can't really compare the two.

I love it! Cough syrup/mouth wash. To me, that's EXACTLY what the DL soft version of a Mint Julep tastes like. I, too, have a sweet tooth and like sweet soft drinks (the kind made with real sugar) but the so-called Mint Julep is undrinkable.

You are right to be concerned, BriannaRuth. The non-alcoholic version is very sweet and very dreadful. To their credit they do not even try to reproduce the taste of bourbon - it's all mint and corn syrup.

The reason to go to this stand is to get some yummy beignets. Besides, who goes to DL to drink? Real alcohol and Big Thunder just don't mix!:crazy2:

Yeah, drinking real alcohol at DL isn't that appealing to me, either. I sometimes get a real drink at dinner in DCA but that's about it. But the idea of recreating an authentic Mint Julep in the New Orleans Square area while listening to the music there sounds like fun.

I've also never had the beignets, although I'm guessing those will be closer to the real thing than the mint juleps. Still, I'm not expecting perfection. Sitting in New Orleans Square having a beignet ... memories of Café du Monde! A little chicory coffee we're good to go. :)

I love the DL Mint Juleps - so much so whenever we go to Blue Bayou I order them there for free refills lol.

I admit I have never had an actual alcoholic Mint Julep but would love to try it sometime.

I am also one of the weird ones that I love having drinks at Trader Sams or Cove Bar then heading into the parks - even doing Teacups haha.

Honestly the Mint Juleps are a bit of hit and miss. You either love them or hate them. I had one in Nov, and to me it tasted minty with a lime chaser. At first I didn't like it, but once I got used to the flavours I thought it was good.
