Minnie Marathon 2007 -- WISH Roster (see post 1 for WISH Meets Info!)

Well whaddaya know? :confused3 There's final instructions?! :scared1: What would I do without everyone to get me throug this? :grouphug:

I'm in green on a good day and purple on a normal day. I have been surprising myself with some good times on some long stretches these days. I'm not certain I will sustain the green however. So, will probably look forward to everyone's company in the purple! (Besides, I paid for being able to play the full amount of time, I should use it.) Spoken like a true Penguin!:teeth: (That coloring thing was fun--tee hee.)

It is exciting to hear of your packing and such. I haven't even thought that far. I should. I need to make sure I have all I need in enough time to get replacement items.

Robert, thanks for the info on endurolytes. I should look into them, but not sure I want to. Sounds nasty. I suppose not as nasty as gels, huh.

It is sad to read that the number of participants is lower than expected. I love the idea of a 15k instead of a Minnie 1/2. It gives lots of people the opportunity to play in many ways.

I take them like a pill and just sallow them. You can(and sometimes I do this also) open up the capsule and empty it into your drink.

They aren't bad and really saved DW and I at Goofy. We trained in temps 50 degrees below race day.

But the heat kicked my but, I only did 3 miles, walked 1 and now I am sitting here, trying not to be sick!!!

angie

That makes me feel better! I could not believe how difficult doing 4 miles was this morning (and the 3 girls I am running with felt the same!!).

That is too bad that the turnout is not good. I wonder how many people are doing it?

Well I think we all will have to deal with the heat but remember the race will be over by 8:30 am.

Here are the norms for May 6(from Weather Channel):

Sunrise Sunset Avg.High Avg.Low Mean Record High Record Low
6:41 AM 8:04 PM 87°F 64°F 75°F 94°F (1999) 58°F (2004)

Something to think about:)

I figured since they had the team sign-ups there would be a better turn-out...:confused3

I know a lot of people who did it as a "one and done" kind of race. Also, with the Pig the same day, I know of a bunch of others that are doing it instead of Minnie. They like the 1/2 option so I think that's why Disney is looking at Minnie to become a 1/2. With attendance down, I would almost guarantee it changing to a 1/2.

That discount email had me pretty POed!

It is reminiscent of last year when the DL half was full. I decided after registration closed that I really wanted to do it. Chad was already doing it, and I was going along with him. I then registered through a charity, committing to be responsible for hundreds of dollars if I was unable to raise it. I was a nervous wreck about meeting that minimum! Then a week or so later, Disney opened up more spots! I was so upset!

(raising money for a charity is a wonderful thing. I am just terrible at pressuring people to give money - and was a nervous wreck until I had raised enough.)

Good morning team.

I have a question regarding all these gels etc. people are taking. Are they neccessary for a 15K if I am walking? The furthest distance I have done is a 10K with only water. I don't like gatorade and not really into the gels, sodium etc. Does anyone just drink water???

Thanks
Kim

Good Morning!!

This question is definately relative to what your body can handle.!! That being said, I did not start using the Gels until our long runs got past, right around 9 miles.

I do have to say that my body does not handle the heat of any kind very well, that is why I had a hard time when we first started running outside, vs. the treadmill. And when I tried to run 4 miles yesterday -- IT WAS ROUGH -- there were other factors (like I was drained from being at the beach) but it was 91 degrees here yesterday :scared1: !!! So I may be using the gels on shorter LR's now. Robert's lists of temps gives you a good idea, being that we are starting so early, I don't think temp will be too bad, although it was MUCH worse than expected at the Disney Marathon this year!!!

I was going to do my LR today, but I don't know what is going to happen, it's so windy right now the trees are literally bending down.

Kim - When I started training for a full last year in the middle of summer in Texas, I started feeling right when I hit the 8 and 9 mile runs was when I needed to consider adding a gel in during the middle of the run. I don't care for the taste of Gatorade just to drink it, but when you are hot and sweaty it seems to help quite a bit. Also, there are other options to gels, like Sport Beans (made by Jelly Belly) and Clif Shot Blocks. The amount of sodium you get in those is similar to the gels. Check out Mountain Equipment Co-Op, you can find the Blocks and Beans there. Another item I have seen at MEC and want to try are Sharkies, energy fruit chews. The Sharkies have more sodium than the other two products I mentioned.

That being said, I just want to reiterate, when I was running in the heat last year, I really felt that water didn't cut it. Not sure what it would be like if you are just walking, but you may want to still think about adding something in. Better to be prepared.

Leana and Angie thank you for the info.

I understand there is gatorade on the course. I guess if I feel I need it I can take a few drinks. I am hoping at 6:15AM it won't be that hot. Problem is the temps where i live have been about 4 C. sorry not sure what that is in imperial but it has been cold and we won't be use to the heat. Good thing we are arriving on Thurs.

What time is everyone heading to the start???? We are planning on leave the car at Epcot and grabing the shuttle over to AK for the start. Not sure what time to go.

Hey 3 weeks today we will be all showing off our Minnie Medals!!!!:grouphug: :grouphug:

Good Question about start, poor Leana tried to ask me a while a go and I have been so busy with school I have not even thought about it. I would like to do the same thing, leave car at start and I said before, you guys don't want me to say what time cause I have a REAL bad habit of getting there WAYYY too early (at least that's what DH thinks:rolleyes1 ) So what do you guys think? :confused3

but it was 91 degrees here yesterday :scared1: !!!

rub it in why dont ya...;) it was a nice day here yesterday but cold...like 55 or something...

DH and DD and I went for a ride yesterday up to Apple Pie Hill...there is a tower up there, and since dd really wanted to go up it, and DH is afraid of heights...guess who was the lucky one to climb 80 steps...yup me...but when we got down she realized she forgot her camera to take pictures, so needless to say we had to climb them again:eek: I woke up this morning and thought I was going to die:faint: between my back, my legs, and (sorry Robert) my friend is visiting...UGH.

I wanted to try and get in a little walk today, but we are supposed to have a noreaster(sp??) and they are calling for some serious rain!! So for all of you who have the gorgeous weather, would you take a walk for me too pleasr...:lmao:

Happy training everyone...I can't wait till the Minnie.

PS I have another question...I said before that my neice cannot go cause her grades, but I was going to bring one of DD's friends instead...I cancelled the flight for my neice and I am going to rebook in DD's friends name, now I am just wondering if I should rebook for the marathon and pay the reg fee again, or should I just let her run in DNeices name since they don't check ID's anyway...I would hate to have to put that money out again????

Oh BTW I plan on parking at Epcot and bussing over to AK...I think we may leave the hotel around 4:30am...ANG...what time do you plan on arriving???

Not Ang, but I'm hoping to be sitting in my car in the Epcot parking lot waiting for a bus at 5:15. That's 1/2 hour before the last scheduled bus to AK. I would love to know how often the busses are running but that's unlikely to happen. The ideal bus to be on would be the bus before the last.:lmao: Can you tell I'm over thinking this????

So, I'll be in the Epcot lot at 5:15.:) I just hope that leaves me enough time for a pit stop prior to the start.

Okay, I typed buses and it looked wrong so I typed busses and that looked wrong, too. So I looked it up in my dictionary, a big fat Webster, and it shows both as the plural of bus. :confused3 I never knew....

It depends if you need energy during the run/walk. What time will you be getting up and eating. At Disney, I typically am up and have eaten hrs before the race starts and after an hr or so I start to get a little flat and use some food(gel, banana, Clif Bar) to help as a pickup. If you can go 3-4 hrs without some extra energy, pass on it. I would pack one as it takes up no space and the worse thing is you carried it 15K. If you don't pack it and you need it, you will be sorry:(

I'm new to distance, but what I've been doing on the long walks is Powerade at about 3 miles, then every 2 miles after that (kinda trying to simulate the distance between stops for the 15K). I carry a small bag of gummie bears just in case I feel like I need something. I sweat alot and want to stay hydrated. As I walk farther & farther, I do feel a need to have something more than water. It peps me up some.

I always like getting to an event early, but I'm not sure when we'll be arriving.

As for the gels etc, I use any lucky me. I've found that the beans or blocks are less messy, but don't digest as quickly. It's a trial and error thing for sure. Carry something as Robert suggested and the worst is you've had to carry it all the way.

Hey everyone

I was thinking about buying some gels just in case, but I guess I need to get on it so I can try them beforehand! I bought a bunch of Sports Beans on sale, but my daughter stole some for lunches, and I kind of worry I'll suck one down whole trying to eat it (I managed to spill PowerAde all over myself on the TM, so choking on a jelly bean is not out of the question!)

Angie- you tell me when we're going! I'm just a passenger, I don't have to make decisions. ;)

Lexxifern- I'm having some anxiety too. Does anyone have a list of what they are bringing with them? I'm thinking camera, phone, water/gatorade on fuel belt thingy, gels, bandaids, iPod, maybe extra contacts, etc. Oh, and more body glide for any unexpected chafing from carrying all this stuff! I keep looking at pictures from the marathon to see what people were dragging with them. Any tips for us newbies?

I'm sorry the attendance for Minnie may be down- I hope that means more picture opportunities for us, and not less characters!

Uh oh, baby is crying and now DH is crying with him (fake crying, I hope)-- can't be good. I hear them coming my way, and don't want to be caught. LOL

Later

Just another bit of weather info--at 7am this morning it was already 78 in Orlando (and HUMID)--of course tonight it is going to be 48, so there is just no way to be sure what it will be like in just a few short weeks!

I plan on testing cliff shots/sport beans on my runs for the next 2 weeks to see how I feel.

I have not even started thinking about what time I want to get there, I guess I need to start planning!!

Jen--I am brining Camera, Gu/Sport Beans/Cliff Shots, Chap Stick and Eye Drops for my contacts. I think that is it....but after seeing what everyone else says I may add more to my list
