I was wondering if there were an places where one could donate money to the families of those miners who lost their lives last week in W. VA.

It kind of ticks me off you see celebrities all over the place donating, running fund raisers, etc but I have seen no one (correct me if I am wrong) with any excessive funds step up to the plate for this situation. I mean, these are just hardworking, American citizens. Mabye that is the reason.

There are no politics behind it. So sad, but seems to be true.

The Chairman of the International Coal Group says these last few days have been among the darkest in his life. Wilbur Ross speaking on CNN says the only event that even comes close was the death of his father, decades ago. Regarding the "miscommunication" when families were given erroneous information about the fate of the miners, Ross says there was a valid reason why that information was not corrected right away. "The joint decision made in the command center by the federal authorities, the state authorities and our management was to communicate facts. That was our approach during the whole process." Ross says wanted to make sure all their information was correct, before information the families. ICG has set up the Sago Mine Fund to help the families of the deceased miners. The company has donated the initial $2,000,000.If you wish to donate, call 1-212-826-2174.

Our local radio station did a fundraiser today but I dont see where you can contribute online to it.

From the Red Cross website:
If you would like to make a donation to the families of the deceased miners, you can call the Sago Mine Fund toll free at 1-800-811-0441 or visit the West Virginia Council of Churches website at www.wvcc.org to make a donation to the their Sago Mine Assistance Fund. (Note: The Sago Mine Fund nor the Sago Mine Assistance Fund is not operated by the Red Cross, we are providing this information in order to assist those who wish to help those affected famiies.)

There was a major fundraiser today in Charleston by all the local radio stations. This is from the V100 website:

All donations will be directed to the fund through the WV COUNCIL OF CHURCHES and deposited at UNITED BANK in Charleston. Checks should be made payable to THE SAGO MINE ASSISTANCE FUND.

The zip code for Charleston is 25301

I think people are assuming the miners will sue the company and win, considering their horrible health and safety record, but with Worker's Comp laws what they are and MSHA being aware of the awful conditions in the mine, a successful lawsuit based on the negligence of the company isn't a foregone conclusion. It would be really nice to donate money to those families. They all look like they could use it.
