Mineral King

I overheard some cast members at Disneyland talking, and they were saying that the Imagineers and Disney are working on building a ski resort of some type near Sequoia National Park in California. Did anyone else hear about this? Didn't Disney try to build something like this before without success?

Not sure where the castmembers got their information. One said it was from a disclosed case of some sort.

Yes, loooooong ago, we're talking Walt era, Disney was working to build a ski resort in the Mineral King area. It fell through and that particular area is now I believe a part of Sequoia National Park.

The CMs were probably talking about the old project.

The way they were talking, it really sounded to me that they were referring to a new project.
What happened to the original concept, any idea? Why did it not go through the first time?

Environmental concerns and opposition from the Sierra Club are the "official" reasons I have seen. That's what lead to the area being annexed by Sequoia National Park.

Are you aware if there was any concern that other motives might have led to the project be scrapped originally?

Again with the memory problems here, but I seem to remember that the Sierra Club played a HUGE part in this. Also, I believe this was really moving forward in 1966. I believe that is when Walt went to Mineral King's site for a press event. Taking that into consideration, I would imagine his death played a big part as well.

As a teaser - they may be something here. Don't necessarily dismiss all these rumors you're hearing about Disney poking around various other tourist locations.

There are only so many ways to grow the Attractions business unit - and they've had a rotten time getting more people to WDW. So maybe it's time to bring the mouse closer to the people...

There are only so many ways to grow the Attractions business unit - and they've had a rotten time getting more people to WDW. So maybe it's time to bring the mouse closer to the people...

Well I truly believe that the original Mineral King project was doomed to failure from sabotage to the project from within.
