During this pregnancy, I seem to have developed an intolerance to milk. (As I think back, I can kind of see that it peeked it's head a few prior times, but not nearly as bad as I've had during this pregnancy.)
I love milk and dairy products. It's really bugging me. I seem to be craving dairy all the time!
Does anyone get relief from those pills that help digest the dairy? I tried them a couple times, but they didn't seem to help so much. My dad suggested goat's milk. I don't mind it, but it blows my grocery budget! It's $4 a quart! That's $16 a gallon!!!!! I can't make my family dinners with goat's milk because I can't handle the cow's milk! I'd go broke overnight! Not to mention the fact that it's summer and I'd love to enjoy some ice cream with my kids. I have not tried soy milk. We have soy allergies in this house. Obviously, the baby and I need the calcium, too.
Help please. Thank you!

I was just reading that many people are allergic to dairy. It really is made for baby cows not humans;) Dr. John Oski, chief of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins School of medicine, believes that up to 50% of all children are allergic to milk, although they remain largely undiagnosed. In the US as many as 80% of African Americans, 90% of Asian Americans and 60% of Hispanics are lactose intolerant to some degree. Those that can digest cows milk are thought to have a genetic mutation that occurred thousands of years ago. The hormones and Casein are very bad in milk (I love it too.) Dairy has been linked to cancer, diabetes and get this-Osteoporosis!

There are rice, oatmeal and almond milks that you could try. There was an article about "good" soy milks that were not tainted with toxins not too long ago in the news. There are lots of veggie cheeses now that taste OK. There are great recipes for veggie cheese made with nuts! Chickpeas, collard greens, parsley, soybeans, almonds, sesame seeds and hijiki (sea vegetables) all have more calcium than milk.

I can't help with the lactaid pills, I have never taken them. I will ease your mind about the calcium. People for some reason think that milk is an excellent source, but it isn't at all.

I can't stand milk and my Dr told me to chew 2 tums with calcium a day, while pregnant, also my son is allergic to milk and his pediatrician said the same thing.

I do hope for your sake that the pills work, if you love a food it is difficult to give it up. I do have a friend that is severely lactose intolerant and they work great for her.

Lactaid works for myself and DH! :) We're both lactose intolerant. Oddly during pregnancy it kind of takes a backseat and I actually crave Dairy Queen, lol. I'd give it a shot! :)

Almond milk is what I've been drinking. Pacific makes one that is soy free. I can find it at Whole Foods and Trader Joes. It's with the shelf stable milks in an orange carton.

Also, my doctor said probiotic yogurt is actually usually fine for people who have lactose intolerance. Maybe you can try that? Stoneyfield farms makes a good one.

I've also found the Rice Dream ice cream is good. And there's a company called SO Delicious that makes ice cream sandwiches using coconut milk

DH uses the dairy pills and they work VERY well. He used to always have GI upset after eating ice cream, pizza etc. but now he tolerates it very well.

We used to drink the Lactaid milk back in the day and we actually really enjoyed it. There's also the soy milks available....I haven't had the plain variety but the chocolate milk is really yummy (just have to watch the sugar content!).

Both my sisters and one niece are lactose intolerant. They use lactaid and they say its works fine. I've seen all them enjoy ice cream after taking a pill. I would start slow though, just in case. Maybe pop a pill and have a little bit of ice cream or yogurt and see if it works.

My boyfriend is lactose intolerant. He takes lactaid with some things, but he simply can NOT have ice cream or milk. No number of pills will help with those sadly. He also has less issues with cheese that is hard and/or white in color. American cheese kills him, but swiss cheese he can pretty much eat all day. He also has little issue with yogurt and loves it as a treat with fresh fruit instead of ice cream.

It is possible to develop lactose intolerance as you get older.

My son is lactose intolerant so I feel your pain about it being a budget buster!

Breyers makes a lactose free vanilla icecream. It can be easy to miss because it looks like the regular packaging but it has a little red box with the words lactose free in it. The best part is that it is the same price as regular Breyers icecream.

As far as milk, we use the lactose free milk because it tastes the closest to milk. There are a lot of brands available (a few that I have found over the years are: lactaid, store brand, horizon organic, farmland, smart balance & real goodness). I usually just look through the dairy case and see what is on sale and get that brand. The expiration dates seem to be a lot longer on this type of milk, so I usually will get a few if it is a good sale. It still is never as cheap as regular milk, but is not near $16 a gallon!

Try the Breyers Ice Cream - thay make a lactose free. Also a number of cheeses are lactose free - check the packaging, they are now labeling it as such. Finlandia, Cabot, some of the others. I am allergic to the milk sugars so if there is something that has no sugar in it, I generally can have it. I can use the Lactaid milk- our supermarket now has several lactose free milks, even an organic one so really look at the shelves in your supermarket. The only things I cannot have are sour cream, cream cheese, blue cheese, the soft dairy items.
