My MIL (who is 70) went in for a colonoscopy yesterday because of some pain she's been having for awhile. Turns out she has a cancerous mass in her rectum.:sad1: She is waiting for a referal to see an oncologist for more testing. They will tell her what stage the cancer is, whether it has spread to other organs, and what the best course of treatment will be.

Obviously my DH and I are devastated and completely in shock. It's especially hard for us because we live in Maryland and MIL is back home in Colorado. As irony would have it, we are actually looking to move back to Colorado,(before we heard of this news), so the timing of all this is so coincidental.

Any prayers would be greatly appreciated. :littleangel:

 I am quite certain this was no coincidence (about your move). Someone up above definitely had a say in how things were going to turn out. :littleangel:

Anytime the "C" word is brought up, it can be a scary diagnosis. You live in this constant state of ambiguity. The good news is that technology has come a long way and they have made great strides. My husband had cancer. We went from the shock of the initial diagnosis thinking we should be planning a funeral, to the sigh of relief when his surgery was over and the cancer never returned. 14 years later and he is just fine.

I'm glad she went in to get it looked at. Of course what you heard wasn't good news, but just think of how much worse it could've been without care and treatment.

I'll be thinking of you in the days, weeks, months ahead. It sounds like she'll have a great support system to help her get through this.

Keep us posted.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, I do hope after awhile the shock will wear off and we can focus on the future. I lost my own mother when I was a child, so my MIL is like my own mom, she is very special to me. :goodvibes

My MIL has a brother who is around the same age as her, and he is battling Prostate cancer that has spread to his lungs and liver. Doctor's are giving him 20 months.....

We are definitely trying to stay positive for the time being, and waiting for more information regarding my MIL.

Thank you again, and I will update this thread as I receive news.

What a hard news to get. I went through that with my dad last fall. We had 5 weeks with him, but he also was at end stage by the time we got the news, and it was not a cancer that could be operated on.

Praying for your family. Keep us posted on any new information.

 I am so very sorry for everything your family is going through.

I will keep you all in thought and prayer:grouphug:

Thank you everyone for your support. :grouphug:

My MIL is going in tomorrow morning for a Cat scan......we are all very anxious for the results. At this moment we have no idea what stage the cancer is at, or whether it has spread. Such a stressful thing to go through, but she seems to be in good spirits.

Asking for continued prayers....

Praying for you and your family. I hope the news you get from tomorrow's test is not as bad as you are thinking.

Hugs and prayers.:grouphug:

I hope so too. I am usually "the glass is half full" type of person, but in this situation my optimism is shaken.....My MIL has a brother who is battling Prostate cancer. He recently got news that it spread to his lungs and liver and the doctors have given him 20 months.....So it's just hard to see cancer hit the same generation of family at once.

My faith is helping me to stay positive, and DH and I are just concentrating on supporting Mom. A family's tight bond is tested in hard times, and this shows what a close family we are. :cloud9:

Thank you for your prayers....:grouphug: I will update when I get the test results.

The Cat Scan confirmed that the cancer has not spread! :goodvibes
So now MIL will go in for radiation to get rid of the cancer in her rectum.

Thank you everyone for your prayers and support! :cloud9:

What wonderful news to hear/read.. And Thank you so much for letting us all know. We (I speak for others) really care and worry, and that is so thoughtful for taking the time out to keep us in the know.

COntinued prayers for your family :grouphug:

That is such great relief for your family. Hopefully the radiation is all she will need and she can close this chapter in her life. Prayers for a smooth recovery. :cheer2:

I am so touched by how supportive everyone is on the Dis. :lovestruc It's a testiment to the strength of this community.

Mom has to schedule a consultation appointment, then set a date to start the radiation. I will post when I know something.

Thanks everyone! :grouphug:

It looks like my MIL will be going in tomorrow for a PET Scan, and then an ultra sound. Once the oncologist gets the results from these two procedures, a plan of treatment can be decided on how to attack the cancer.

My MIL seems to be doing well, she is keeping busy with baby-sitting her 4 month old grandson, and going with friends.....I believe all this support will help her get through this difficult time. :upsidedow

Thank you everyone for your continued prayers! :goodvibes I will keep everyone posted.....

I hope everything goes well with the tests tomorrow, it must be a nerve wracking time for your dear MIL.

I agree that support of family and friends makes a huge difference during difficult times and I am so pleased your MIL is surrounded with people that care about her.

Thank you for the update.
