Might lose our house, any ideas?

I was laid off in July from my full time job where I had been for 3 years, and also worked there with my wife. It took me 3 months to find another job, unfortunately, it is only a temporary job at a Halloween store. It was something, but after being out of work for 3 months, the bills and debt started to pile up and also, late fees weren't helping catch up on anything either. While now it looks like my wife might also be laid off here soon as well, and the bills and debt just keep getting higher and higher.

So, basically we are $5,000 in debt, thankfully, compared to other people, isn't too bad. $5,000 would get us caught up on our mortgage, and other bills we have. Now I just have to figure out a way to get that $5,000.

Ideas so far are gathering any and all junk I have laying around the house and ebay/yard sale everything and hope for a miracle. As well as hitting local pawn shops and getting rid of my DVD collection and other things.

Anyone have any other ideas?

What about getting training and becoming a referee for local sports teams? I know it's that time for basketball refs here, my DS is registered for a class so that he can make some money and from what we understand, you can work as much or as little as you want. Most games are either on a weeknight or weekends which leaves time to find other work during the weekday too. There are a lot of sports that need refs.

Yard sales are great for some extra income, and resale stores/ebay as well.

$5,000 seems like a lot, but it's doable, one step at a time. Hang in there!
Best wishes to you....

I know if you post this on the budget board they have tons of ideas to save money etc. Best of luck to you.

Have you talked to your mortgage co? They may be able to help. I was laid off after 17 years with a company in Sept of 08. In July I had had my second transplant and had complications. My mortgage co gave me a short term hardship payment which was lower than my original payment. I don't if it will work for you, but it is always worth asking.

I wish I had some advice here, maybe talking to the company that holds your mortgage might be a good idea as the previous poster said.. Ebaying some of your items that you do not need will bring in some cash but sometimes it takes a while and sometimes they do not sell, sounds like you need immediate help. Also.. thinking out loud here, what about calling the rep in your area to see if he/she has any suggestions or programs you might avail yourself of...

I hated reading this, wish I had more ideas for you.. hang in there.

So many  and prayers for you.

You are not alone. Many of my neighbors are still out of work. One family has been in trouble since October 2008 and just found a buyer for their home, at a huge loss and their savings is wiped out. They found place to raise their 3 little girls, in a row home across the street from the mother's parent so they can get help with babysitting. Also, next door to me my neighbors have 3 of their adult 20 something daughters living at home with them, all chipping in to make ends meet. None of the young adults anywhere near me who have graduated in the last 3 years have been able to move out on their own yet.

So many people are still in so much trouble I don't get why no-one is helping or giving it any attention. It's as if our entire news system is based in some fa-la-la imaginary Hollywoodland reporting on fake troubles while the real ones go ignored. Either the news outlets are totally out of touch or totally apathetic, either way it's not helping anyone I know.

I hope things turn around for you OP:hug:
