I am wondering if the Cast Members on the Cruise Lines have access to a microwave?

I would like to include some microwave popcorn in their gifts (as they will take up little to no room in the suitcase, and I can pack quite a few of them without an issue).

Not sure....good question. Maybe ex-techie could answer.

Yes the crew has a microwave in the crew mess. When I worked there I lived off of cup of noodle soup that you could just pop in the microwave.

Hope this helps.

So in addition to the suggested tip & extra cash, would microwave popcorn be a good gift for the CMs?

I don't personally remember microwaves for the crew to use, but they did have industrial ones.
Shoevg has said they have had them so maybe they were added after I left, or before my time :confused3

I thought I read somewhere (and I could be totally wrong) that they did not have microwaves on board for passengers to use because they did not want anyone poping microwave popcorn on board the ship. From what I read, it is a fire hazard (it burns too easily and sets off alarms. I think that is why they only serve pre-bagged popcorn on board. No popping required ). So, I am not sure they would want CM's doing it either.
I work in a school and cannot even count the times staff members have set off the fire alarms and we have evacuated the school because of microwave popcorn. It causes a lot of problems here at school, I could only imagine the problems it could cause on a ship - LOL!

Hmmm... Thanks for posting this. We do have a microwave in our room and I had planned to bring popcorn. This is a good question to ask DCL. I would be horrified if one of the kids or myself burned the popcorn and caused an issue and ruined anyone's vacation. That would completely be horrible!

pdwimmer,

Given the fact the Royal Suites do have a microwave oven, I would suggest that your kid's are told they are not to use it, and if you do pop popcorn in it, then you stay with it and watch it.
Since they have had them for a fair few month's now, I'm sure stuff has been burned in them before now (popcorn etc!)

Also to add, that when a smoke detector is activated, Quarter Masters are usually immediately sent to the location of the detector (in Crew and Guest Area's) to investigate.
Red Parties would only be called if there was an actual fire.

Enjoy the popcorn but don't let the kid's use the microwave is my advice :)

Thanks again Ex Techie. You Rock! You are a continual source of good advice! Although, to be safe, I'll leave the popcorn at home. I can't promise my hubby won't burn the popcorn :-)

As an aside, there's a lot of people that just don't understand the appeal of popcorn. Personally, I love it, but I moved to the UK 12 years ago and haven't met anyone that likes it like I do. You can get it at the cinema, but it's not a hugely popular snack, and none of my friends ever make it at home (microwave or otherwise).

I imagine some CM's may get it as a present and wonder "what do I do with it?"

Instead of popcorn, might be better off handing out dollar bills. They're thinner, take up less space in the luggage, don't require a microwave and will probably be appreciated more by the recipient.

We have given microwave popcorn and brand new release movies for group gifts like merchandise and guest services. The officers in each have told us they were great gifts because it then didn't come out of their budgets for a group event or reward. It was an extra night of celebration for the whole group. And they could even divvy it up to two different times so no one was left out. :)

We just got home from the Dream. I packed little treat bags for the CMs that had gum and candy in them. I attached the bags to the envelopes that I'd written a thank you note in and put their tip into. They were so appreciative of that little extra effort, and many of them told me that they ate the candy right away! So, for just a little time and extra weight, I feel like I was able to make their day as much as they made mine!

I don't have an answer to this question, but the topic of microwaves on cruise ships made me think of this. Several years ago I was watching a documentary on the making of RCI's Freedom of the Seas. The interviewer asked a crew member what some of the weirdest experiences they've had were. The crewman said that one time a guest, who was European, called guest services, and said that his microwave wasn't working. Guest services was obviously confused as there are no microwaves in the staterooms, but before they could ask what the guest was talking about he hung up the phone. A crew member went to the guest's stateroom and when the guest opened the door, the crew member saw a piece of bread in the stateroom safe.

I thought I'd share. :)

Who microwaves bread? :)

I don't know! I was wondering the same thing. Then I was wondering if maybe it was a toaster and not a microwave... I know it was bread in the safe though LOL. I wish I could find the documentary. I'll have to search around online for it.

If it was a toaster, I'll have to save this story for when someone asks about toasters in the stateroom. :cutie:
