Is Mickey's Backyard BBQ worth going to or would you recommend Hoop-Dee-Doo? Food seems about the same, but I think Mickey's BBQ is only one table service.:confused

We've done both...I think I like HDDR better. But it's not an overwhelming preference....we like 'em both.

I think the food is a BIT better, at HDDR, and I like the (admittedly corny) entertainment better.

Can I ask the ages of your group?

Honestly, I have to say....if I didn't have kids in our party, I'd probably skip the Backyard BBQ and then the preference for HDDR probably WOULD be overwhelming.

I think the BBQ sounds really fun and we'd enjoy it. I decided on HDDR instead though because we'd also enjoy it and it's at an indoor location. I didn't want to have to worry about the weather on an evening in December.
Also, I have to admit, I hate sharing my meal with bugs.
I think my family would have really liked seeing the characters at the BBQ and dancing and stuff. It wasn't really an easy decision.
Also, I'm pretty sure it's a 2 credit meal.

Both are 2 credit meals. HDDR is fun for everyone of all ages. BBQ is outdoors so it can be hot, steamy, buggy, etc. The BBQ has characters come out and dance with the kids, HDDR is a vaudville type show with lots of audience participation. I would do HDDR

Another vote for HDDR:thumbsup2 We have done both and HDDR is definately better. Inside location, family style service and a great show.
Mickey's BBQ is outside location, buffet style with slow moving lines, and organized chaos. Pushy people monopolizing the characters and crowding the dance floor:confused3. Not my idea of fun.
We will not go there again.

Have a great trip.

I've heard the same thing from a number of people, now (the crowded, pushy people point).

Given that, I want to caveat my "slim" preference for HDDR...when we were at Mickey's Backyard BBQ, it was a VERY slow, both at the BBQ and at the parks in general. So we didn't run into that particular issue. IF we had (and I can see how you would, given the set up), I think I'd overwhelmingly recommend HDDR. Having read others experiences, I think we might not try the Backyard BBQ again because it went SOOO well the first time, I think I'd be a bit peeved if we ran into problems the next time.

:)

So is HDDR air conditioned? I want to do this, and it would be really nice to be nice and cool and see the show.

I've not done HDDR, but we've done the BBQ twice and liked it.

We were there in Oct, so lower crowds and temps. I do not think I would go in the heat of the summer. :faint:

My son was 4 the last time we went, and he really had fun dancing along side the characters. It kind of reminded me of the dance parties at the ticketed events at MK (like MNSSHP). The characters come out and are immediately surrounded by kids, which is fine, but then the kids are surrounded by adults trying to make sure THEIR kid is closest to Mickey, etc. It was a little annoying - but you know what - people are equally as rude on Main Street 10 minutes before Spectro starts, so it really didn't spoil anything for us. The shows in between the dancing were fun too - a roping cowboy and some line dancing - not something we see here in NY very often.

I watched some clips on You Tube and read about it before we went, so I knew what to expect, character and food wise. I think a lot of people that say they hated it probably didn't know what to expect, or were unrealistic about what "dancing with the characters" really means. If it says "BBQ" then no one should be surprised that the menu is BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs and hot dogs. If it is an event with characters, no one should be surprised that there will be lots of kids there, all wanting attention from Mickey and the gang. Since it's outside, you have to take the weather into consideration and watch the 5 day forecast. If it looks like it will rain or be 112 degrees, you can cancel 48 hours prior.

The food is fine...well, the burgers are gross, but the rest of the food is fine. It's picnic food served to the masses - not a gourmet meal. The unlimited wine and Mickey ice cream bars were a highlight for me - and surprisingly they do go really well together. :rotfl2:

I'm a firm believer in trying (almost) everything once to form my own opinion. If you're going during the steamy summer months, I'd do HDDR for the a/c alone. But during another time of year, especially if you have kids, the BBQ is lots of fun.

We did Mickeys BYBBQ 2 years ago on our 1st night (after driving from PA overnight) figuring it would be a nice way to start the trip. It was, except it was HOT...Did I mention that it was HOT. It is outside, under a pavillion so even if it rained we would be ok. We got there early so we all (11 of us) could sit together.

The food was ok, the crowds were ok, it was loud music. Our kids were too little to be into the charaters yet (it being their 1st night, Chip and Dale walked over and my kids FREAKED out!!!). It did include beer, which for some was a HUGE hit!

I was told this year, by the CM, when we made our ADRs that the charas are up on stage, that they don't 'mingle' with the guests anymore. I'm not sure if this is accurate or not.

We did book again for Oct and unless something else comes along that tickles my fancy we will keep it, as the boys are much better with charas.

Good luck!

Not so - both are considered dinner shows and cost two TS credits.

Note that HDDR has no Disney cartoon characters. The characters are a troupe of Wild West performers. If the kids are looking for Mickey Mouse, they won't find him there.

Beer and wine were included (bud light) it made it better

They ended up leaving early because it was chaotic...not worth 2 TS..
