I always go on cruises with the idea that I'm going to write a review or trip report when I get home, then reality sets in. It never seems to get done! This time, I'm going to make a genuine effort to write one - for two reasons. 1. I'm currently off work due to an injury, so I have a lot of time on my hands. 2. I don't plan on going on another Disney cruise for QUITE some time, so I need to preserve these memories! What better way to do that than a trip report! You'll learn more about #1 and the reasoning for #2 later on in this report.

About ME
Since this is my First Trip Report, and I'm not a well known individual (YET!) on the DIS Boards, I wanted to tell a little bit about myself. I'm 27 years old and married to my wonderful Husband who is 31 years old. We have a son who is 4.75+ years old - turning 5 in November. We live in Wisconsin. We also live to travel. We take at least 1 "big" (a week or longer by plane) vacation a year, sometimes more. We also take various road trips throughout the year to keep us exploring. When I'm not traveling, I'm booking travel for other people - I'm the Manager of the Travel Department at a meeting and event planning company.

A little cruising background - First off - we love it. Second, we are loyal NCL cruisers. We have been on many NCL cruises (both together and before each other's time). We have also experienced other lines such as Carnival, and RCCL. My Husband has been on Princess (I haven't) and also one Disney Cruise (I hadn't) prior to meeting me.

Enough about me, right? This is supposed to be a trip report after all!

Oh, one more thing I wanted to mention was #1. The injury I spoke about earlier. This is a whole nother story in itself, so I'll try to make it short. In July 2015, I was diagnosed with a spontaneous CSF Leak. What that means is - basically, my brain fluid was leaking out my nose. I had brain surgery performed through my nose on September 2nd, so I would have plenty of time to heal prior to this cruise (we booked this cruise July 2014). There were some unexpected complications in which I ended up having to have spinal surgery as well (similar to a laminectomy) 2 days later. After spending 10 days in the neuro ICU, we weren't sure if I'd be making this trip, but it's obvious, I MADE IT! :)

OK - Now Seriously - Enough About Me....On to the good stuff!

Below - I leave you with a silly family photo - "Stingray Selfie" (as my son called it) from our trip!

Pre-Cruise Adventures
On this trip, we were traveling with my Husband's parents who often travel with us on family vacations. Also, our friend Dean, and his 6 year old son would also be joining us!

We arrived in Miami two days before the cruise on October 7th. Our flight left super early in the AM out of Chicago O'Hare, so we had to leave the house by 4:30am. We flew on Frontier. Not my favorite airline, but we got a great deal on the tickets, and arrived on time and all in one piece. That's all we could ask for right? Unfortunately, we got stuck sitting in the back of the bus with about 10 very naughty children. They took turns screaming, yelling, and kicking backs of seats for the duration of the flight. They made my son look like an angel (which isn't easy sometimes!). The one across the aisle from me hit the "Call" Button 4 times in about a 3 minute time frame, if that gives you any indication of how fun the 3 hour flight was.o_O The flight attendants were even attempting to quiet down these obnoxious children to no avail. ANYWAY - we were on vacation, so we couldn't be TOO bothered by it all. :yay:We stayed at Four Points By Sheraton Miami Beach for our 2 night pre-cruise stay. It was more than adequate for what we needed. Clean, with a pool, and right on the beach. We got a really good rate, and were even upgraded to a nice room with a view. I was communicating with the hotel's GM via email prior to our trip regarding his responses to the negative Trip Advisor reviews of his hotel (they are hilarious - check them out if you ever get a chance), and we also received a bottle of Champagne and free breakfast buffet coupons. We had two rooms (one for two nights, one for one night for our friend arriving on October 8). Both were upgraded to oceanfront rooms.

Coming up next......Embarkation Day!!

I'm on the Western Caribbean out of Miami next month, so I'm looking forward to your trip report.....jonathan

Embarkation Day
The day had finally arrived!! I felt like we had been planning this trip forever, and we were FINALLY jumping on board the Disney Magic. We woke up super early to catch the sunrise and eat a hearty breakfast because our Port Arrival Time wasn't until 1:30pm-2:00pm. Silly me, being my first Disney cruise, I wasn't aware that there were specific PAT based on your online check in time, and we did our online check much later than we normally would have due to my little brain leakage issue!

We were able to get a late check out of 12pm at the hotel, so we setup a van to pick up all 7 of us (my family of 3, the in laws, and our friend and his son) at 12:30pm and drop us off at the port. We arrived at the port at approximately 1pm. We never got our luggage tags and book in the mail from Disney due to an address issue, so the porters put luggage tags on our bags. We gave them a few bucks, and off to the terminal we went. Security checked our paperwork and identification and off we went to check in! We had no issues checking in and boarding prior to our Port Arrival Time of 1:30 - 2:00 pm. The lines were very minimal to check in. Since my Husband is a Silver Castaway Club member, we had a separate line and only waited about 1 minute before being helped! The process was quick and easy.

Here we are - excited to get on the ship

Once all 3 parties were checked in, we headed up to the gangway together. We did get our picture taken as one big group, as well as just the 3 of us. We thought they turned out really well! Unfortunately, I haven't scanned in the photos we purchased yet, but we did end up buying both embarkation photos.

One thing I wanted to mention before getting too deep into this report is that we brought on 2 bottles of wine in our carry on, and security didn't blink an eye. Of course we were within the limit, but I thought they'd at least open up the bag to ensure it was wine and not some other type of alcohol. They did not do this, nor did I see them hand checking anyone's bag for that matter - at least at the time we went through. I can't comment on bringing beer/wine on at the port because we visited Grand Cayman on Sunday, and there are no alcohol sales on Sunday. The only other port we visited was Castaway Cay!

Anyway, back to heading up to the gangway - as we boarded the ship and heard our family name announced, that was fun! We were finally on the ship! :yay:

Once we had our name announced, we were notified that our rooms were ready, so we could explore the ship, have some lunch, or head directly to our rooms. Since we had a heavy carry on with two bottles of wine, we opted to head to our rooms, and drop off our stuff, then meet on Deck 9 before heading to Cabanas for a late lunch.

We had room 6030 and my in laws had 6028 which is the connecting stateroom. Our friends were on deck 2 with an Inside cabin.

We received a Castaway Club bag since my Husband had been on a prior Disney Cruise. We also ordered the Halloween Treat bucket for Alex and the beer mug for my DH.

Our stateroom had the split bathroom which came in handy a time or two!

I absolutely loved the shampoo and conditioner they supplied as well. They made my hair feel so soft. I cannot comment on the scent as I completely lost my sense of smell after my CSF leak repair, but I'd assume they smelled pretty darn good too! As you may know they sell it in the gift shop, but it's not cheap. I ended up sneaking a few of the small bottles home because the room steward would replace if they were gone or "empty". :ssst:

Our connecting staterooms also had connecting verandahs. We weren't sure if the room stewards would open up the wall for us or not, so we took it upon ourselves to do it. My DH used two keys to stick in the hole and unlock the door that separated them. Not sure if it's "allowed" or not, but we kept it open the whole cruise with no mention of it. Our room steward also never closed it. Speaking of our room steward, I don't know that we would have even known he existed if it weren't for our room being cleaned up when we returned in the afternoon and evenings. More on our room steward later....

After resting in our rooms for a few minutes, it was time to head up to Deck 9 to meet Dean and his son Taylor for a late lunch/snack!

Embarkation Day to be continued.....!

Awesome! I'm sure you'll have a great time. I'm hoping to have this report completed within a few days. :)

Sounds like a great start. I am anxious to see Navigators since I will be doing this cruise on Nov. 6.

Embarkation Day Part 2
As we made it up to Deck 9 for lunch, we walked through the Adults Only pool area which was nice and quiet. It looked very relaxing, although we never did find time for a visit. When we got to Cabanas, it was about 2pm. It was still PACKED! I was hoping it would be clearing our by this time. We still managed to find space for all 7 of us together. I thought the food was really good in Cabanas. I do have to say that I think this is one area that DCL does much better than NCL (I will be making some comparisons throughout the report!). The range of food items was great and it all tasted good too!! I didn't take pictures of our plates, but the two things I remember having that really stuck in my mind was the shrimp cocktail and mushroom pasta. YUM!!

After our meals, we decided to do a little exploring of the ship. Our first stop was the Oceaneer Club, so we could get the kids their bands before this evening's festivities and to check it out for ourselves. We only had about 15 minutes before they were closing to get ready for the Muster Drill, so it was a quick but adequate visit. We got the kids their bands and took a few minutes to explore the area for ourselves.

I love the hand washing station! My son Alex also loved it. Taylor, our friend's son, wasn't a huge fan, so he asked for wipes the first few nights, but by Day 5, he too was enjoying the hand washer!

We didn't get a chance to visit the lab before they closed the kids areas for the drill, but we did get a few peaks of the lab throughout the cruise when picking up the kids.

Next visited Animator's Palate, as that is where we would be having dinner our first night. Our dining rotation was ACCLA. I loved this rotation. I thought I might be too tired the first night to really enjoy the show at Animator's but it was a really great way to start the cruise (more on this later).

By this time, it was almost time to begin the muster drill, so we went back to our staterooms to rest for a few minutes and locate where we were to meet for the drill.

Everything went smoothly at the muster drill. It was raining before the drill began, and although it was looking stormy, we were presented with a beautiful rainbow to keep us entertained while we were all lined up at assembly station H!

After the drill, it was announced that the sail away party would be moved to the atrium due to the wet decks. We decided to pass on the party, and spend the time in our room/balcony, resting up for dinner. A sail away party in the atrium just didn't sound appealing to us, not to mention the crowds! We never did "sail away" while we were in our room. We did get a great view of sea planes taking off which was neat!
12087299_10154341249289698_1097649277773299273_o.jpg

Our luggage didn't make it to our room just yet, but I packed our door magnets in our carryon, so I hung those up!

Our luggage arrived at about 5pm, so we unpacked, then it was off to dinner at Animator's Palate!

Following along, great trip report! Glad you're doing well after your health troubles. We're going on the same cruise in December.

Loving your report so far! We did the western out of Miami last year on the Wonder, so looking forward to seeing how your trip went! I hope you're recovering well from your surgeries, that sounds scary!

Sounds like a great start. I am anxious to see Navigators since I will be doing this cruise on Nov. 6.
Awesome! You will have such a great time! If someone hasn't already done so, when I'm finished with this report, I can attempt to scan in and post the Navigators. Only thing is, we were on a Halloween on the High Seas cruise, so your Navigators may be slightly different.

Following along, great trip report! Glad you're doing well after your health troubles. We're going on the same cruise in December.
Thank you!! I bet the ship looks so beautiful decorated for the holidays! How exciting!

Im on this cruise in January and I'm loving your review so far!
Awesome! By January, I'll be itching to go on another one - well to be honest, I'm ready now! Haha My bank account, probably not so much. :rolleyes1

Loving your report so far! We did the western out of Miami last year on the Wonder, so looking forward to seeing how your trip went! I hope you're recovering well from your surgeries, that sounds scary!
How fun!! Thank you very much. The surgeries were both very unexpected. One day I have clear fluid dripping from my nose, and the rest is history. It's been a whirlwind, but I'm happy I was still able to cruise!!

I will continue my trip report tomorrow! My son thinks everytime I whip out the laptop it's time to continue creating his "Christmas Wishlist". He will be in school tomorrow, so I can be on the computer in peace! :surfweb::woohoo:

I'm enjoying your trip report!
And I did look up the reviews on Trip Advisor for my own entertainment. You are right, his responses are funny!

"Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. While we’re huge fans of brevity we feel it important that when telling a story to include just a few more details in order to make the story worth reading. Let’s start over with an introduction to the story….”It was the rainy season in the tropics and all sorts of flying, crawling and biting insects were about….”. And now comes the exciting part….“I left the balcony door open and the lights on inside my room and to my surprise a mosquito flew inside intent upon taking my blood…(scary huh)”. “It was so very big and moved so slowly that I battled it for…..about a second”. And now the unhappy ending…..”I took the unfortunate remains to the front desk and demanded my stay be made complementary as living in Georgia I’ve never seen a mosquito before”. Our response; “We’re sorry about the mosquito however…..”. We again apologize for the mosquito and for not being Ernest Hemmingway. We invite you to return during the cooler months and we’ll work on a Sequel with a happy ending."

Just found your report, and am enjoying hearing about your trip! We leave on the Magic from Miami in 52 days, so I'm trying to read as much as i can! Can't wait to read more.

Hi, just found your TR and I am loving it so far! I took my first cruise with DH on the Disney Magic this past May and it was also a 5-night cruise. We LOVED it!
Looking forward to reliving the memories of that trip through your TR! You have a beautiful family! I am sorry about your brain injury, it sounds really serious, I hope all is well, you look great in your cruise pictures!
BTW, did you make your stateroom door magnets? They are really good!

Great trip report so far. We are doing this cruise March 2017 as a surprise to kids and can't wait to see all your pictures and reviews

Loving it so far, we are sailing on the Magic in November!
